Smith Music Co. -- Marshalltown Security Savings Bank -- Marshalltown CLASS HISTORY In the fall of 1953, lk excited freshman began their high school careers. Their names were Carlene Cartee, Mabel Foreman, Gary Gethmann, Gilda Goettsch, Roger Hertema, Jack Hill, Gerald Jones, Merle Lynch, Rodney McTurk, Marie Smith, Kent Thomas, Meta Viering, Betty Walter, and Joan Miller. Six members of the class, Gary Gethmann, Roger Hertema, Rodney McTurk, Kent Thomas, Meta Viering, and Betty Walter, had attended the Beaman School since kindergarten. Gilda Goettsch began kindergarten here, but moved away dur- ing 2nd grade. She returned again in 3rd. During this time Joan Miller had arrived in first grade. Merle Lynch started at Beaman in the hth year, and Jack Hill in the Sth. Both Carlene Cartee and Mabel Foreman joined in the 7th grade. Marie Smith departed during the first part of the freshman year, and Gerald Jones left in his sophomore year. The final member, Carol Rhinesmith, joined in the 10th grade. Our class stayed the same during the Junior and Senior yearm Though our class consisted of 13 members, we never considered it as being unlucky. we have had many events that we will always remember. MBJOP events of our Junior year were the Junior class play, uJumping Jewels,' and we will always remember our Junior-Senior Banquet. Highlights of our last year were such events as our Senior play, nGrandpa Goes To Collegegn going to the tournaments at Des Moinesg Junior-Senior Banquet, Baccalaureate, commencementg and putting out the annual. Our faculty for our Senior year was Mr. Mable, Hr. Sackett, Mrs. Campbell, Miss Yates, Mrs. Katzer, Mrs. McAllister and Mrs. Mable. SENIOR CLASS PRUPHECY The other day while reading through 'Downbeat' magazine, I happened on a picture of the Boston Pops Orchestra. To my amaze- ment it was being conducted by none other than our own Gary Geth- mann. I graduate of 57 . On the platform stood another familiar face. Merle Lynch, the singer from old B.H.S., was the featured guest on this particular occasion. As I continued to look through the various books and maga- zines, I was more surprised than ever. I glanced through a mage- zine on auto mechanics and discovered that the feature article on custom cars had been written by Kent Thomas, another classmate. One picture in the article showed two feet sticking out from un- der one of the custom classics. The feet were identified as be- ing Rodney McTurk's, a top mechanic and body man in.Chicago. Another showed pictures of building projects for the pre- vious year. To my surprise, the engineer for a new br1dge-build- ing project was Jack Hill. A picture of him and his secretary in his office almost floored me. The secretary was Mabel Foreman, busy at her typewriter. On the front page of a Chicago newspaper, was a picture of the presentation of a trophy to the winner of the International Livestock Exposition. The fieldman for the breed association was Roger Hertema, who was presenting the trophy. The issue of Viering, head of classes. A state tr1t1onist's name was Betty walter. She was a college publication newspaper, showed Meta the home economics at the school, in one of her nutritionist was a guest of the class. The nu- proceeding to tell the class the nutritional values of various foods. The farther I looked through my collection of books, news- papers, magazines, etc., the more amazed I became. I happened on a recent issue of a fashion magazine and found another classmate. Joan Miller was a beautician in New York. In the same magazine was a number of pages on the latest fashions. Carol Rhinesmith was one of the top models and was also an instructor in a model- ing school. Continning I found an article on the recent Mrs. America thinking about the contest in Atlantic City. Much to my surprise won. She had been declared Mrs. America of before. As I picked up my last magazine, I was Gilda Goettsch had 1967 just two days good old days in high school. After turning magazine, which was on art, I ran across Carlene Cartee. After reading a little further, I found that she was an instructor in an art school in Cincinnati. She had won many top prizes with her paintings. Seeing all of them brought back many memories and how I wished we could have a class reunion soon. wow! what an idea. I decided right away to contact the members of my good old class of 'SY' and see if we cou1dn't arrange some way of meeting in the next few months. a few pages of the I. H.
