The Senior Class Of BEALL HIGH SCHOOL Frostburg, Maryland Presents THE 1972 MOUNTAINEER Volume XLV We Dedicate ... The senior class dedicates the 1972 yearbook to Miss Betty Ann Hanna who has won the affection and admiration of all. Filled with an abundance of warmth and humor, she has been a guiding influence to many young people. Miss Hanna has faith in peo- ple. She believes in them, trusts in them, and thus draws out the best in them. THE MOUNTAINEER is dedicated to a person who exemplifies the qualities and ideals of an educator, a counselor, and a friend. Finding safety From mid-year insanity In Christmas vacation. Eternity is found Between now and June. Like mists in morning sun. Days disappear changing Proms, exams, and Graduation tears Into memories that dim Summer joy with a longing For things past And beyond recall. WILLETTS' TOURS It's waiting. The Outside beyond those doors Is waiting For us. Our time in the sanctuary Has passed And we must move on. Now we must hold our own. Struggle And Contend Against others We don't even know. Once we lived In secure cubicles of comfort But where have they gone? We're told we must leave Our shelters And become young adults. That we must go Through those doors And change the world. So suddenly— And far too soon— The world thinks us older Than we feel. 12 Officers Inspire Grads Personality, enthusiasm, and ability describe this year's Senior Class. Under the guidance of Miss Dru- cilla Schriner, the class of 1972 has reached the highest attainment possible for the last three years. Both as Sophomores and Juniors, the class of '72 held a June picnic on the last day of school. The Sophomore dance, Love is Blue was the initial success of the talented Seniors, and the Senior Prom and Senior Class Day culminated activities of the class of 1972. This year's spirited Seniors involved themselves in various projects. They furnished the basketball roster boards and painted the mountaineer emblem on the gym floor. The Seniors arranged through Senator Beall to obtain an American flag which had flown over the Capitol. The class also replaced the 48 star flag in the auditorium with a 50 star flag Under the direction of Harry Storm, Bob Arnone, Diane McFar- land, and Anna Brodbeck, the class of '72 brought another rewarding year to a close with a Senior Class Day Presentation and an outdoor Commencement. 14 Debonair Seniors Unlock Fashion Doors William Allen Donald Allen Sherry Arnold Robert Arnone Suzanne Baker Genna Berry Bradley Beal Marlene Beeman 16 Jacqueline Blank David Bolden David Bittner Larry Bittner Denise Blank Garry Blubaugn John Blubaugh % I Anna B rod beck John Brodbeck Terry Blank Mark Broadwater Alana Brodie 17 Janice Cosgrove Cathy Crawford Deborah Craze Elizabeth Crowe Jeta Cummings Esthermay Custer Richard Davis Patricia Delaney 18 Sharon Drees Deborah Drew Patricia Drummond Samuel Dudley Co-eds Model Changing Fashions Ambition Drives Robert Dugan Charles Eberly Thomas Durney Allen Fester man James Fike Rebecca Ecfcard Deborah Filer Alan Finzet Julie Emerick Roxanne Engle Jeffrey Farr Roy Faulkner Gloria Gari itz Karen Geary Paula Frost Marsha Fuller Sandra Gordon Linda Grabenstein Class Of 1972 Mary Ann Garton Jean Gets John Green Seniors Seek Solitude Paul Karter Raymond Kailing William Keister Craig Kenney Richard Hughes Judith Hopkins John Huff Thomas Hunt Nora Kasecamp Ellyn Kenney Kevin Kenney Mary Lou Kenney James Koon Colleen Lashbeu9h Barbara Layman Mia Layman Richard Layman Rodney Liller Pamela Lynn Judith Lintz 24 Nevin Livengood Robert Loar Brenda Lynch Theresa Lyons Diane McFarland Dale McKenzie Sally McKenzie Jean McKnew Seniors Reach Higher Goals w i Ili 'i - —J.dL— mm mi,, m Debra Merrbach Richard Miller Robert Moore Robert Morgan Revelry Reaches Dreamers Gerald Morgan David Muir Dwight Murphy Steven Murphy 26 Dennis Plummer Anita Porter Roger Pollock Michael Porter William Payne Thomas Neilson Robert Pifer Debra Plummer Thomas Porter Warren Porter Catherine Pressman Kathy Preston Mary J. To them we have looked For our futures To them we have entrusted Our minds And our lives. Even as they taught us— We taught them. Together we found That teaching must be one With learning To succeed. The teacher and the taught Become one. Soon we will leave To test what they have given us. To see if we are prepared. With apprehension we hope They haven't failed. The administration coordinates the affairs in the school. Its goal is to aid students and ascertain an enjoyable attitude toward school life. The admini- stration's involvement with the students helps to es- tablish a close relationship between the teaching staff and the students. Mr. Joseph Pellerzi, while supervising office oper- ations, also coordinates institutional services and di- rects building and student services. Mr. Joseph Carter and Mr. Enordo Arnone assist the principal. They take the time to become involved with student activ- ities. Decisions on the behavior of students constantly arise, but underneath the shouting appears a helping hand. As a link between the faculty and students, the administration must approach a problem from all points of view in order to formulate the best possible solution. While'keeping pace with today's current educational trends, they offer sound advice in policy matters relating to the scholastic program. 42 Questioning Students Query Past And Present Students studied the history of man's past in an effort to gain an understanding of the political, eco- nomic, and social aspects of life. The range of study varied from the Cro-Magnon man and ancient Greece to the Korean War and the drug problem. A family life program was added to the curriculum. Learning through experimentation was one of the teaching methods used in the science department. Students familiarized themselves with Erlenmyer flasks, Bunsen burners, and microscopes. Courses in chemistry, biology, and earth science gave students an opportunity to understand the modern technological world. Mr George Pfrogner, chairman, supervised a staff of six instructors. Language is man's basic instrument of communi- cation. In the literature-centered English curriculum the student is able to interpret, write about, and discuss the literature he reads. The wide range of activities enables him to exchange his ideas with those of his peers. John F. Armstrong Ellen P. Arnone Enordo R. Arnone Harry W. Baker Shirley J. Bishop Elsie G. Blair Thomas S. Students found materials to complete required assignments. Some students also mastered the techniques of independent research. A new addition to the library was the audio-visual ser- vice with the availability of filmstrip viewer, turn-table and earphones, and the cassette recorder. The foreign language department again carried on its tradition of interpretation and discovery. Verb conjugations, endless vocabularies, and spontaneous recitations echoed from the third floor. In a remodeled home arts suite, the department taught a variety of useful skills, from bread baking and slip-stitching to canning and family budgeting. The curriculum included a day-care center for twenty children from the community. Industrial arts offered practical training in voca- tional skills. Projects, completed in the workshops, required the use of T-squares, drills, welding units, and circuit breakers. Students and teachers worked together and also laughed together in an effort to attain a common goal- understanding. In an atmosphere conducive to learning, a mutual respect was formed. To achieve a comfortable unity was the aim of both students and teachers. Mrs. McFarland and Mrs. Jones appear comfortable and casual. 46 Educators Contribute Individual Talents Coach Finzel supervises all interscholastic sports events. 48 Raymond P. Miller Paula W. Munson Lloyd L. Neilson Maurice Nelson The guidance department aids students in curric- ulum choices and schedule planning. They also ad- minister all testing, send college transcripts, and ar- range parent-teacher conferences. Physical education received some innovations this year. The staff added fencing, archery, and bowling to the curriculum. Emphasis was placed on individual sports that can be played in later life. The music department encouraged proficiency in vocal and instrumental skills. Choir and Ensemble represented achievements of excellence in singing. The Beall High band provided music for half times, the spring concert, and assemblies. Office machines, duplicators, and pencils supplied the student with the necessary means to obtain busi- ness training. Instructors in the commercial courses prepared students for achievement in American private enterprise. Treacy Donna Wagoner The math department under the direction of Mr. John Armstrong, offered a wide selection of courses, ranging from basic math to trigonometry and intro- ductory calculus. Math, a science based on numbers and symbols, necessitated the use of reason and logic. Teachers instructed students in the application of theorems, proofs, graphs, and equations. The art department supervised by Mrs. Filsinger offered instruction in several areas. Sketching, enam- eling, sculpting, and designing invited expressions of the students' imaginations. Teachers encourage their students to use line, shape, and color. Linda Wagoner Mabel S. Suddenly the joys Of our past Become foolish things At which to laugh With our friends. Confused — We wander With the aimless crowds. Unlearned — We stumble in the pitfalls Of Life until We grow wise with the knowledge That we are growing up. And now we must look forward To the new horizons. A dedicated staff spent many hours out-of-class to meet Mrs. Arnone's deadlines. The yearbook staff sponsored a Howdy-Doody Dance in order to raise enough money to add forty pages to the '72 Moun- taineer. Innovation served as the key word for the staff this year. The journalists chose a six- column horizontal make-up with down-style head- lines; they accented photo-journalism and contem- porary media ideas. As a community project for underprivileged children, the girls dressed dolls for the Salvation Army's Christmas drive. The new trash cans around the school and the mass clean-up in the spring were part of the Tri-Hi-Y's ecological project. The club supported their activities by selling Mountie bumper stickers. The Hi-Y was responsible for selling programs at all home football games. This activity provided mon- ey for the cost of the Youth and Government pro- gram and the Christmas Dance. Members worked hard to clear the area for the Turkey Day bonfire, held in twelve inches of snow. At the World Service Fair the Hi-Y operated a cassino to help cover the cost of their World Service pledge. Jointly the Tri-Hi-Y and Hi-Y performed many services. Both clubs assisted at the Rotary's Pancake Festival. And for the first time, the clubs sponsored an initiation picnic for new members. In December, the Tri-Hi-Y held the annual Christmas Dance, The Peppermint Ball. As a part of the County Council, club members participated in the World Service Fair, and traveled to Annapolis for the Youth and Govern- ment program. 84 Theater Arts: Avenue For Talent The Thespian Society establishes and advances standards of excellence in all phases of theater arts. The focus of the Society has always been on the student—his achievement, his involvement, and the betterment of his education in theater arts. Thespian Troupe 1701, along with the Dramatics Club, spon- sored the annual one-act play tournament and the May Day program. They also assisted with all assem- bly programs. Students Take Trips To Foreign Lands Jay Frase, a member of this year's junior class, spent last summer studying and visiting various Euro- pean countries. The trip was sponsored and financed by the Foreign Study League. Jay and 260 students from other areas of the United States visited Paris, Rome, and London. The purpose of the tour was to allow students to study abroad and to see the way the people lived. While in Europe, Jay had the oppor- tunity to see many landmarks. He visited Buckingham Palace, the Louvre, the Eifel Tower, the Sistine Chap- el, and the Vatican. The students attended classes and spoke conversational French. Jay received one acad- emic credit for the tour which lasted six weeks. Cathy Schutz, a senior, spent last summer touring the United States and Europe with 501 high school students. Cathy was selected from hundreds of appli- cants to participate in America's Youth in Concert, a program sponsored by the Universal Academy for Music. The talented songstress departed the latter part of June for New Jersey and four days of long rehearsals. The Young Americans presented their first concert at Carnegie Hall. From there they journeyed to Washing- ton and performed at Constitution Hall. Cathy had the special privilege of being present at the White House when the President signed the bill giving the eighteen year olds the right to vote. President Nixon presented Cathy with a souvenir pen, one of her most treasured momentoes. The first week of July found the young Americans in London where they practiced for a performance at Royal Albert Hall. In Brussels, they gave an outdoor concert, and then traveled on to Paris. After a concert in Paris the young vocalists trav- eled to Zurich, Switzerland and then to Innsbruck, Austria. Cathy also visited Venice, Florence, and Rome where the group gave performances. The tour ended on July 26. Popular Music Color Guard: J. Emerick, G. Garlitz, J. Skidmore, J. Blank, D. Dayton, D. Witt, S. Merbaugh, M. Winners. Flag Corps: B. Brown, S. Werner, L. Yutzy, D. The tempo quickens, and the baton spins faster, forming large circles in the misty air. The award winning Beall High majorettes have just completed another sparkling performance. Besides appearing at football games, the thirteen- member squad participated in parades, pep rallies, and the bonfire before the Turkey Day Game. In the squad's first year at Seton Hill, a national majorette clinic, the girls captured two awards for excellence. Seniors Kathy Preston, Debbie Myers, Susie Baker, Denise Blank, Robyn Hager, Becky Eckard, and cap- tain Diane McFarland made their final performance in the Memorial Day parade. Feature twirlers Vicki Jones and Suzanne Lemmert and returning majorettes Brenda Jay, Corinn Ganyu, Bobbie Ferree, and Pam Munson anticipate next year's season. 106 High-Steppers Kick To Fame The Beall High Belles, advised by Mrs. Helmick, high-stepped into the 1971 season with a new look. Officers and line donned royal blue jump suits with bolero vests and hats. The precision drill team proud- ly performed at the Mountie football games and in the local parades. Because of their excellence, the Frostburg State band invited the girls to entertain during the halftime of the Frostburg State-Glasboro game. Officers of the Beall High Belles attended sum- mer camp at Indiana University. The girls were in- structed in precision marching, dance, and high-kick routines. Belles: Patti Delaney, captain; Patty Conway and Kathy Poole, co-captains; Karen Greig, Janice Cos- grove, and Theresa Koppel, lieutenants. Postponed for two days because of 12 inches of snow, the game could only be played after the shovel- ing of snow by the student body and the efforts made to plow the field. The Spirit Club built the Turkey Day float for the queen and her court and a postponed bonfire was rescheduled for the eve of the Snow Bowl. Spirited Mounties Show Devotion in Views Sloshy Victory The varsity football squad for 1971-1972 proudly chose Miss Patricia Conway as reigning foot- ball queen. Patty was crowned by Mr. Pellerzi at the Turkey Day game. Snow and rain drove Patty and her attendants to sit in the stands instead of on the traditional float. Patty made an impressive appearance in a long, blue Victorian gown. Attendants Cindy Persons, ju- nior, and Theresa DeVore, sophomore, wore gold gowns. The royal court inspired the mountie team to victory over rival Bishop Walsh despite a sea of mud. The queen, her attendants, and hundreds of spec- tators enjoyed the once-postponed Mud Bowl. Yearbook Queen Glides Through Winter Season The 1971-72 Mountaineer Queen, Diane McFar- land, was crowned at the annual Christmas dance by Mr. Pellerzi. Escorted by Bob Nelson, Diane was chosen by a penny-vote of the student body. The queen represented homeroom 103. Serving as Moun- taineer princesses were Theresa Koppel, 106; Becky Eckard, 203; Sharon Drees, 105; Brenda Lynch, 110; and Debbie Myers, 101. Diane reigned over all winter activities. Miss Mountaineer was sponsored by the 1972 yearbook staff. 115 Queen Debbie Reigns Debbie Myers was selected by popular vote of the student body to reign as the 1972 Queen of the May. Debbie was elected to the court in her freshman, sophomore, and junior years. Each class chose their own attendants. Senior at- tendants were Diane McFarland and Maria Reed; ju- nior attendants, Bobbie Jean Brown and Cindy Per- sons; sophomore attendants, Billie Sue Fritz and Linda Livengood; freshman attendants, Sonja Wachter and Peggy Sue Seib; eighth grade, Jamie McMorran and Cherie Myers, and seventh grade, Julie Atkinson and Susie Elliot. Queen Debbie was crowned at the afternoon per- formance given for the student body. Two evening performances were also presented for the public. 117 118 A cast of 250 students sang and danced their way through the twentieth century during the annual May Day spectacular. Featuring a program of decades, the cast spent many hours writing and producing the two-hour show. They reminisced through the Charles- ton, Al Jolson, Charles Lindbergh, Snow White, and Shirley Temple. They recalled WWII, the jitterbug, and rock 'n roll. They staged segments from Fiddler on the Roof and Jesus Christ Superstar. The pro- gram concluded with a salute to the prisoners of war in Vietnam. A Race Through History 119 It's graduating from driveways And weed-grown vacant lots To cinder tracks, limed fields. And courts of wood or clay. It's a self-testing frustration Of your first time in the game Or the bittersweet joy Of your last. It's sweat and anger and matburns and blisters. It's pride and shame. It's being hit by the noise Of a cheer-led crowd or running In a silence-laden solitude. It's a hard-won pin, a birdie, A love game, a new record, a tie-breaking penalty kick, fatigue-born nausea, and numbing cold. It's the painful realization That, despite what they say. It's not how well you played But the score people remember. It's a pep rally, a band, majorettes, a drill team. It's a testing of self. It's company in victory And loneliness in defeat. 120 Cheerleaders: Co-eds Boost Spirit Under the enthusiastic leadership of captain Deb- bie Coleman, the 1971-72 spirit squad sparked the Mounties on to many victories. The cheerleaders promoted school spirit and spurred a thunderous re- sponse from fans. Taking time out from their regular practice, the girls designed spirit posters and bright- ened pep assemblies. Seniors Debbie Coleman, Jeanie Geis, and Maria Reed used cheers with a soul beat rather than the traditional yells. Underclass cheer- leaders Alice Langan, Carol Vogtman, Babs Reeves, and Georgette Rendar will return to inspire the Mounties in September. In her second year as advisor, Mrs. Jaehn encouraged precision among the seven girls, and she helped them with the pep rally presenta- tions. Heightening a victory or easing a defeat falls to this squad, who enjoyed a Spiritfull year. Varsity Gridders Collect Five Wins The 1971 Mountaineer football team brought pig- skin spirit and victory back to Beall with their first winning season in three years. The Mounties compiled a 5-4-1 record, finishing third in the P.V.C. with a 3-1-1 record. The football Mounties finished strongly with convincing victories over Masontown, Keyser, and Bruce. Then after losing a hard-fought and well- played game to Allegany 14-0, the Mounties bounced back with a postponed Turkey Day victory over Bis- hop Walsh. This final game of the 1971 schedule was played in adverse weather conditions of snow and mud. But the Mounties came from behind to win with two TD's in the third quarter. A. Front Row: M. Wilson, B. This cry, repeated by Coach Nel- son, echoed from the gymnasium walls. Because of the lack of height on the basketball team, the Moun- tie cagers had to depend on a hustling defense and fundamental basketball. Plagued by injuries at the beginning of the season, the netters regrouped and began a new season following their slow start in December. The new season was marked by a stronger defense and an all-around team effort. Under the supervision of Coach Ozzie Nelson, the basketball Mounties assumed the role of the dark horse in the W.M.I.
