Their fortunes continued to improve much to the delight of their faithful followers. Then in the season finale, before a capacity crowd, the Beall eleven upended the LaSalle Explorers 7-0 to cap a very successful season for Coach Calhoun. SQUAD Back row: W. Hyde, J. Folk, G. Gene Zumpano John Schultheis Ed Finn Bill Hyde MOUNTAINEERS LOSE INITIAL TILT Three quick touchdowns in the last six minutes of the second period by the Allegany Campers proved the undoing of the Mounties in their first outing of the 1958 season. Beall's mis- cues in the second period paved the way for an alert Alco team to hit pay dirt three times in three possessions of the ball. The second half was a stiffly fought battle with the Moun- taineers matching the Campers on even terms. However, the damage was done, and Beall left the field on the short end of a 31-0 score. KEYSER RAPS BEALL 19-0 Undefeated, unscored on Keyser High, the PVAL Champs stretched their record to 29 straight wins over a stubborn Beall team on September 19. The Mounties fought valiently but the veteran Clarkmen used a varied running and passing game for a three touchdown victory. Schultheis, Finn, Carter, and Thomas played a bang up defense game for Jerry Calhoun's Mountaineers, while Zumpano and Evans highlighted offensive play. Joe McGowan Jim Folk Frank Parry George Perkins BEALL TRIMS SOUTHERN 28-0 Rolling up 304 yards to 99 in running, the Mounties broke into the win column in an impressive way on September 26. Sparked by Gene Zumpano's three touchdowns, Beall triumphed in hardy style over the Highlanders of Oakland. Beall broke the scoring ice in the opening period with a 65 yard dash that culminated with Zumpano's 35 yard romp to the end zone. Hyde added one more touchdown in the final period while Smith cashed in on three extra points and Evans one. FORT HILL TOPPLES BEALL 27-0 Despite the difference in the score, the champion Sentinels had considerable difficulty with a stub- born Beall eleven on October 3rd. Prior to this game the Sentinels had averaged 50 points a game in their first three outings. Beall threatened early in the third period but had their drive halted on the Fort Hill eight yard line. The fine all around play of the Mounties against the champion Hilltoppers gave their supporters confidence in the outcome of future games. Skull drill before final game. Hyde goes for yardage. BEALL DEFEATS ROMNEY 20-0 The Romney Pioneers were handed their first loss of the season on October 10, at Frostburg, by the score of 20-0. With Evans and Hyde toting the pigskin, Beall moved from their own 20 to Romney's 23. Zumpano went through for the score and Bruce Smith's placement was wide. The Mounties later took possession after a Romney punt to their own 36. Hyde picked up 8 and Zumpano raced 50 yards to the 6 from which he went in standing up. He than ran the extra point. Evans tackled on a final talley after Beall had moved from their own 25. Smith added a point from placement. FROSTBURGERS ROUT NORTHERN 39-7 The Northern High Huskies fell victim to a six touchdown scoring spree on October 18. Most of the scoring came as the result of long gallops by Hyde and Zumpano. The charges of Coach Calhoun tallied a pair of touchdowns and an extra point in each of the first, second, and fourth quarters and held the Huskies to a third period score in registering the win. Zumpano, Hyde, Carter, Linn, and Smith participated in the scoring. HANDLY WINS OVER BEALL 20-6 Bill Hyde stopped after picking up gain through Explorer line. In a well played game before a large crowd in typical football weather the Handly Judges won out over a stubborn Beall team 20-6. The first half saw both teams play to a scoreless tie. Early in the 3rd period the Handly safety returned a punt 80 yards for the first score. In the fourth period Handly added two more on pass plays. Beall drove 85 yards on the ground in the 4th period with Hyde going over from 12 yards out. PETERSBURG TRIMMEDIN 41-12 GAME With Zumpano scoring four touch- downs and Evans and Smith chipping in with one each, the Beall eleven swamped the Petersburg Vikings 41-12 on the Frostburg field November 7. Bruce Smith converted for the extra point on five for five tries to highlight the kicking for the evening. The wide edge in the scoring allow- ed Coach Calhoun to use his entire bench. In all, 34 players saw action. BEALL-CHARLES TOWN IN 6-6 DEADLOCK The Mountaineers spent the afternoon of October 31 in Charles Town winning everything but the ball game. Early in the first quarter Jim Evans tied the game with an 18 yard touchdown run through the center of the Panther line. The attempted conversion, however, was blocked. Twice more Beall found itself within Beall wins the toss Of the coin and elects to the Panther three yard line but on both kick to LaSalle as the annual Turkey Day occasions fine line play thwarted the Game gets under way. touchdown attempts. L 1 T 1 Players hold burial services for defeated LaSalle after game. TURKEY DAY TILT TO BEALL 7-0 The fired-up charges of Coach Calhoun gave the spectators in Beall stadium a Turkey Day treat when they served up the LaSalle Ex- plorers on a seven point platter. Fairly evenly matched in the first half, the teams played to a scoreless tie. But from the moment the second half began the Beall eleven completely dominated the game. Led by Smith and Schultheis, the Mountie line smothered the Explorer passers, throwing them for long losses on many occasions. Mixing the T formation with the single wing, the Frostburgers marched 70 yards with Zumpano smacking through the center of the line for the touchdown. Bruce Smith converted for the extra point to make the score 7-0. The victory was a great team effort which rang down the curtain on the 1958 football season. Zumpano goes for 18 yards for a first down on LaSalle's 22. 92 THE LITTLE MOUNTIES Back row: A. Komatz, J. Goebel, B. Hetrick, J. Delany, J. Layman, J. Wilson, C. Stewart, Coach Munson. Front row: D.
