Text from Pages 1 - 54 of the 1950 volume:

We dedicate this hook to MR. JOHN D. -CHIEF” KELLER as a symbol of our appreciation for the many things he has done for us; the personal interest he has taken in each of us and our school; his willing- ness to help whenever called upon; his friendly attitude toward each stu- dent and each member of our faculty; his congeniality with everyone. We pay our respects to the custo- dian of our building, which we have likened to a hotel in which we are so-journers for five years. PRINCIPAL ARTHUR W. TAYLOR Standing with reluctant feet Where the brook and river meet. At last, the Great Day has arrived, the day for which you have worked so hard and so long. The Day that means Freedom: Freedom from books and lessons; Freedom from rules and regulations; Freedom from bowing to authority; Freedom from the restrain- ing hand of the ubiquitous teacher. 1 his day, naturally, is a day of much rejoicing; a day of pure, unadulterated joy. 1 hen, why this feeling of almost nostalgic sadness, this surge of something strangely akin to panic, this vast reluctance to take the final step? Can it be that you realize how much you are going to need those books and lessons, no matter what your future may be? Can it be that you realize that the problems you must now solve do not have the an- swers in the back of the book? Can it be that you realize that life is made up of rules and regulations and the proper recognition of authority? Can it be that you realize that what you thought was a restrain- ing hand was at once a guide and a support? If these things be realized, then you have already taken the first big step and you can go forth bravely, head high and eyes looking straight ahead. You will discover, as you need them, that you have absorbed many skills, many attitudes, many facts, of which you are now not aware. You will find that your school is always with you, that your teachers are ever ready to add to what they have already taught you. YVc, too, regret that you must go. but we know it cannot be avoided. So we send you forth with con- fidence in your ability and courage, and, even though you may shed a few tears as you see the happy care- free, high school days slipping back forever over the horizon, wave them a fond farewell and fix your gaze on the new horizon, the one that means LIFE.
