CHARLES HARPER Voted by the student body as the year's outstanding boy and outstanding girl. There are adults who relate the problems of tomorrow to the youth of today with despair in their hearts. In every generation, seemingly, there have been adults who, resistant to continual changing ideas and practices, have regarded the youth of their day hopelessly, presaging direful futures for their nations. Yet in crisis after crisis in our own national life there has always come forward leadership virile, courageous, highly intelligent and capable of calling to its support followership surprisingly alert, remarkably adaptive, and certainly loyal. Today our nation is passing through a crisis surpassing in intensity and extensiveness any it has ever experienced and everywhere there is evidence of efficient leadership and devoted follower- ship. In the tomorrow of our nation, the today's youth will also be ready to wrestle with the unusual problems that will arise. This being so, the mem- bers of the class of 1945 confidently and prophetically dedicate this issue of the Mountaineer to the youth of today now getting ready in body, in mind, and in spirit to carry forward the torch of civilization which will be tossed to them by those who are now fighting so valorously on the battlefields of the world. So nigh is grandure to our dust, So near is God to man, ' When Duty whispers low, Thou Must The youth replies, I can! -Ralph Waldo Emerson 3 MARIANNE KARLOWA
