They followed an abbreviated schedule of their son’s daughter’s program. Many confused parents, some former BHS graduates, were unable to locate rooms and had to be aided by members of the Key Club. Things gradually moved smoothly, as parents and teachers found each other. During lunch and study periods, the parents lounged in our lunchroom, where refreshments were served. Generally parents found the evening interesting and informative. 37 39 niorA uA. Many people spoke to the attending congregation, telling them how to apply to their lives the ideas and dreams of Dr. King. The people mourned the loss of a great man and recognized his life and his sacrifice once again as the inspirational deeds they were. Sadness was in evidence over the loss of this man of vision and wisdom whose story had only just begun. 65 umorS Somewhere within the midst of the crowd drifts the Juniors. They are somewhat confused after reading Emerson and Thoreau. American History doesn’t help them to see where they ’re going either as they look at the problems of the past and face those of the future. Some will decide where they are going and who they are by the end of the Junior year. Others will aimlessly wander and be caught up in the midst of the crowd as if they were leaves being forced down a stream by the rush of the oncoming current which hurriedly pushes them to their destination. They are a group who sharpen their skills and prepare for a career taking dictation and doing typing. They are well prepared when they leave and are sure to find a place in the world. 93 _X c m iniitration The running of Beacon High is a difficult job which calls for many uaried abilities. Under the leadership of Mr. Billups, who is assisted by Ms. Gilchrist, students find a remarkable organization which is designed to serve them. Once inside the office, Tanya Horton takes over. She is acting as secretary in the absence of Mrs. Gunn. GEORGE BILLUPS. JR. BARBARA GILCHRIST 94 KATHY MCCORMICK NANCY RIKERT Attendi ance “Who’s here? Who’s not here? Who cares?” The attendance office does care who's not here. They have to - it's their job. Without the “Boss”and her entourage, the records would be chaos. With luck they'll go computerized in a few years and it will be a lot easier to take attendance. Linda Babcock. Jean Serino. Deanna Malouf, Sharon Winckles, Lone Hoffman. Paula Sandford. Jo Ann Babcock, and Kathy Tancredi. Cjuiclt uiaance Mr. Mordas and Mrs. Peralta are the help- ing hands” on the long road through school. These counselors help students arrange schedules, revise computerized schedules and assist in applying to colleges. They continue to help our past graduates by sending transcripts and letters to their selected schools. Mrs. Garrison’s long ex- perience in the Guidance Department helps filter out those problems which could detract from the efficiency of the Depart- ment. This is Mr. Mordas last year with us at BHS; we wish him a fond farewell. RUTH PERALTA JOSEPH MORDAS 95 The language and its mastery are two of the most difficult goals a student faces in high school. Leading students through with leuity is the province of Mr. Dunn; while a cool, calm atmosphere pervades Mrs. Pennybacker’s class. Mrs. Davis dishes up rare fare and Mr. Bell has a unique technique. Students finally face English 12 under the tutelage of Mr. Laing, the Lord of Lighthearted Language; and Mrs. Hopper who runs the home for happy Hamlet handlers. Anyone who survives this department deserves a commendation. WALTER BELL Science Nature's wonders come into view through the skill of Beacon High’s science teachers. Under their watchful gazes, students explore the mysteries of the world and uniuerse. New discoueries lie close to old achievements in this field of eternal darkness where everyone seeks the light of knowledge. In an ever- growing realm, people can catch a glimpse of the possibilities of what is and what may be. MARION CORDER SANDRA GLADDEN JUDITH DAMPMAN EUGENE KOSA IflflatliematicA The skills needed to find almost any value are available here from simple mathematics to the intricate arts of Advanced Calculus. A student can go as far as he wishes entering into new worlds of knowledge which include time and spatial relationships. The large field is very well covered by the knowledge and practiced skills of our faculty members. ARTHUR MARKEL HELEN ROWAN 99 Social Attidi iei Knowledge of the past and its euents is the key to the future. This is the feeling which prevails in the classes of Beacon High s history teachers. The battles of the past are fought again and those of the present are examined in the hope of finding solutions. The world’s memorable events can be viewed and the great voices heard once more. Students use the past to get a grip on the present and to set their course for the future. Our resident nurse, Mrs. Petrie, besides amazing students with her knowledge of names, provides the more practical side of health: band-aids, bed rest, temperature taking and sending students home when more serious illness threatens. 105 To create a work of art requires great skill and patience, as well as insight and a good subject. Taught by the Old Master himself, Dr. Tlumak, and new talent, Mrs. Harris, it offers photography, painting, sculpture, and more to young artists. These people haue set examples for others to follow. Mrs. Gunn worked hard as secretary for many years and set a record for excellence. Mr. Borghard filled a dual purpose in Industrial Arts and Drivers’ Education, doing both with skill and finesse. Mr. Mordas has been a fine Guidance Counselor with a history of wisdom and common sense to his credit. The careers of these people haue been fulfilling and useful. We wish them well in their new lives. 189 The final pages of this book are for those of us who worked long and hard to make it what it is. There was a price to pay in terms of mental and physical health. Our “Illustrious” Editor, Marie Schettino, having taken the many short jokes thrown at her in a tall way, has embarked on a crash growth program. The darkroom staff of David Chain, Eric Schmidt and Howard Riggs has developed tunnel vision. This may explain why they may have lost some of the over 1,000 pictures they printed. Across the room, artist Beth Chaisson has done so many impressions that she is now schizophrenic. Dr. Tlumak hopes she and Jane Wasnorowicz will recover in time for next year. Jane also suffers from a chronic shaking of the hands which affects her artwork. Literary Editor Kimble Knapp has developed terminal writer's cramp, for which there is no known cure. Thanks to assistance from Jennifer Schmidt, all of the write-ups (about 300) were done in time. Paul A. Rosmilso took the task of typing these many words, a mind-boggling job, in addition to being Business Manager and having to deal with unpaid bills. Layout expert Jose Acosta has developed nightmares of being “boxed in,” while our Social Director (errand girl), Jessica Reinhoehl, has been reduced to crawling in exhaustion. E r. Tlumak, our faithful advisor, has come down with an allergy to meatball heroes, and triple- duty people Howard Riggs and Eric Schmidt, who helped with business, forgot how to count. Others who helped in business are Diane Curtin, who continually got lost on assignment; Karen Smalenski; Beth Viera; Liz Myler; and Sue and Ann Piccone, all of whom braved the elements to seek out money for our book. A few other people helped a lot. At what, who knows? But Katy Colton, Carol DiTullo and Dolores Jones came. Everybody who came worked hard without pay of any kind. Weren’t they foolish? These people 191 gave up their Friday nights, a few other nights, and some even came in during week-long vacations to get this masterpiece done on time. This was made necessary due to deadlines. As they approached, the artroom grew quiet. Fear began to mount and the signs were soon seen. Fred’s voice was raised a bit, and Marie's temper grew even shorter than before. This dreaded thing forced the staff into something they disliked intensely, WORK! They did a lot of it to get this book done so that it would come out before August. 192 mmm
