Hewes. In the years Mr. Hewes has been with us, he has taught us the importance of thinking for ourselves, being in- dividuals, and having an understanding of our human rights which are so important to the American way of life. Mr. Hewes has made an indelible impression upon all of us who have had the good fortune of knowing him and his influence will always be part of the spirit of Beacon High School. 2 here lived an old miser named g Ebenezer Scrunge who owned a factory in Beacon that produced Varsity jackets and letters. Ebenezer hated his work (except for the money he reaped), hated his employees and hated all high schools and their students. In fact, he only wished to exploit high school students by charging very high prices for his jackets and letters. Worst of all, Ebenezer especially hated Beacon High School and all of its students. He forbid his employees to wear blue and gold. He scoffed at the bulldogs. When anyone mentioned school spirit in front of him, he went into a rage. School Spirit? Bah, humbug! , Ebenezer would say. If I couldn't make a buck off them, I'd just as soon see all the little Beaconites school- spirit themselves into a frenzy and decrease the surplus population! . 3 The day before the Homecoming Game, a group of high school students came to Ebenezer's shop. They asked him if he would come to the game tomorrow and support the team. Support the team? , cried Ebenezer, Bah, humbug! , and slammed the door in their faces. Then Bobo Crockett, one of the most diligent workers in the factory, approached Ebenezer. rr r 4 Please, sir, may I have time off to see t Homecoming Game tomorrow? , Bobo sai My son Giant Jim is the star of the footbc team and I'd like to go see him and sho some school spirit. School spirit! Suppc the team! That's all I've been hearing lately! , Ebenezer exploded. Bah, humbu on them both!! Bah, humbug! on the bh and gold!! Bah, humbug! on the bulldogs Bah, humbug! on Beacon High School at all of its students!! And as for your day off tomorrow, Bobo, Bah, humbug! When Ebenezer went home that night, some very strange things happened. His door knocker, usually a sober-looking lion, transformed into a bulldog before his eyes. When he turned on the radio, the only song he could get in was Hail to Beacon . When he turned on the T.V., everyone seemed to be wearing blue and gold outfits. Whatever he did, wherever he went, something reminded him of Beacon High School. 6 “Bah, humbug! cried Ebenezer and went to bed. He immediately fell into a deep sleep. As the clock struck one, Ebenezer awoke with a start. He saw a tall, well-built young man standing at the foot of his bed. His hair was in the style of a crewcut and he wore a white shirt, jeans with large cuffs, thick white socks and loafers. What most impresssed Ebenezer was the old fashioned letter sweater the boy wore. Ebenezer knew his letter sweaters and that style hadn't been made for years. It was blue and gold with a large gold B sewed on the pocket. Then the boy spoke. I am the ghost of BHS past, he said. Touch the corner of my letter sweater and we will fly through the past together. Ebenezer wanted to say Bah, humbug! , but he was so frightened that nothing came out. He touched the ghost's sweater and away they went. The ghost of BHS past said, I remember a young Ebenezer Scrunge who went to BHS. He wore a letter sweater and school ring. He was a member of the football team, active in the Student Council and on the Yearbook staff. He took pride in his school and never said Bah, humbug! to school spirit. Do you remember him, Ebenezer? Ebenezer began to remember how good his days at BHS had been. Then the ghost of BHS past flew Ebenezer home. ft Is f ie c ocfc struck two, Ebenezer found himself sitting up in ' ‘ -•%. U-ji. V) bed. He felt as if he had just awoken from a very strange dream. i wi y{ He was about to say Bah, humbug! and try to get back to ”J 0', ySk-— JLi 3 -yi sleep, when he noticed a young girl standing at the foot of his ■ U 1 j j J bed smiling at him. Ebenezer didn't 1 r even try to say Bah humbug! . He touched the pom-pon and 1 1 away they went. The ghost of BHS present took Ebenezer to Bobo Crockett's house. Bobo was telling his son Giant Jim that .vY— he wouldn't be able to go to the Homecoming Game tomorrow because Mr. Scrunge wouldn't let him have any time off. J W7f(%=s=J|||(| I V “ iagii .■ ? 1 .-; '-- That s OK, Pop, said Giant ]im. know you have school spirit in your heart. And we're gonna win that game tomorrow for everyone in Beacon, including Mr. Scrunge! Ebenezer felt touched, something he hadn't felt in a long time. Now you've seen all the good things that go on in BHS, said the Ghost of BH5 present, and she took Ebenezer home. As the clock struck three, Ebenezer found himself sitting up in bed. He didn't feel as if he were dreaming anymore. He looked toward the foot of his bed, expecting to see someone standing there, and he did. In fact, he saw two people, a young man and woman both dressed in caps and gowns. They smiled proudly at Ebenezer but remained silent. Ebenezer said, Are you the ghosts of BHS future? The graduates shook their heads yes. Since the ghosts of BHS future were unable to speak, they let the graduates of BHS speak for them. Turn to the Senior page to see who the future lawyers, doctors, teachers, businessmen, and engineers of Beacon are. The next morning, Ebenezer Scruge awoke a new man. He remembered the ghosts of BHS past, present and future, and all the good things they had shown him about BHS. He ran outside and yelled for everyone to hear! Hurray for the blue and gold! Hurray for the Bulldogs! Hurray for BHS! Then he rushed to his shop. He ordered a big sale on Varsity jackets and letters. Then he told all his employees that they could have the day off on one condition—that they all attend the Homecoming Game. Ebenezer told Bobo Crockett that he would buy his ticket to the game. Let's root for Giant ]im and the Bulldogs together, Bobo , he said. The game was an easy victory for the Bulldogs, with Giant Jim making the final touchdown. And no one cheered louder than Ebenezer Scrunge. an (i the Spirit jCin (jerd S' The entire Yearbook Staff would like to show much appreciation to our advisor, Dr. Fred, to whom we owe this edition to. We have collaborated our talents around his eccentricities and guidance to produce this year's edition of Visions. His eyebrow raising humor, has left each of us with many special memories from the meatball syndrome to how- much-change-is-mine to it-was-here-just-a-minute-ago Friday nights. Dr. Tlumak's dedication to the yearbook is much appreciated. The seniors who are leaving wish him as much luck and success to his upcoming yearbooks as we have had working as a team these past years. 16 Administration 3 acuity Education JACK O'LEARY - President HARRY LYNCH - Vice President JACK BOLANDER MARY CROFT NEIL GALLAGHER JOSEPH GUARNERI PAUL K. On Wednesday, October 15, 1979, Beacon High School bravely opened its doors to the scrutiny of the concerned parents of the community. Each parent was given a miniaturized version of his child's schedule to follow. The parents were eased into the routine of the school day with an orientation given in the auditorium by Assistant Principal Barbara Gilchrist. 40 When the bell signaled the change of classes, confused parents could be seen scurrying through the halls trying to find their children's classes. Members of the Key Club and other helpful students volunteered to give directions and direct the flow of traffic. Parents generally found the evening enjoyable and informative, although a few complained that they were getting too old to climb up and down the many stairs in the school. 41 Cm 'ion i £co(oqists Explore Jlte Cjtval OutcL oori This year marked the beginning of a new science elective — ECOLOGY! Co- teachers Mrs. Nicolato and Ms. Rose, led the group on a day-long outdoor lab and field expedition, hiking the Sierra Trail at Stony kill. The main task of the day was freshwater and sampling and organism identification. Occasionally, short discussions competed with the warm sun pouring onto a bed of leaves, and exhausted students. The Student Council is the one organization in which the entire student body can participate. Under the direction of Mr. Cauquie, the council meets every other Thursday. Among the many projects and fund raisers the Student Council sponsored this year were a Halloween Costume Contest, a sale of hand-painted bulldog pins, decorating the hall for the holidays and an assembly program. The Student Council remains active as long as the student body is willing to participate in the meetings and activities. Commendations go to our advisor, Dr. Fred Tlumak, who gave up a home cooked meal each Friday to eat meatball heroes under the stress of unmet deadlines and non-existent ads. He was inevitably harrassed by heartburn and headaches. Our dedicated editor, Gail Romanelli turned in her pom-poms to ensure the yearbook's progress. Not only did she direct each department into working in harmony, but spent many late nights finishing layouts and typing. After learning what it takes to organize layouts, write-ups and photographs, Marie Schettino, apprentice to the editor, suf- fered each Friday night from recurring nightmares of being the editor of Yearbook '81. Lynda Grella, our topnotch typist, pushed her fingers to the limit each Friday night after putting in a grueling day of school and drycleaning work. Our artist, Michael Rivera aided by Liz Mengel, and Michael Taylor taxed his creative genius envisioning new designs to adorn the pages of Visions''. Layout experts Milagros and Dominga Valentin and Suzette Lynch worked busily building ways to arrange photographs and write-ups while avoiding the horrors of trap-crap . Our macho photographers and darkroom night owls Michael Taylor, David Chain and Paul Rosmilso, traveled tirelessly around the school taking pictures to provide us with clear and clever visions of life at BHS. Our literary experts, Mysia Haight and Kimble Knapp, labored endlessly to fill the pages of Vi- sions with eloquence and wit. Marisa DeDominicus, Kim Plant, Laura DiPasqua and Raymond Yeaple took care of business by begging, caioling and, if all else failed, theatering merchants into buying ads and students into ordering year- books. Gail Schettino, Carmen Fontanez, Beth Viera, Berget Reinhoel, Luann Pavelock, Karen Joseph and Rina Rutigiliano gave up bits and pieces of their time and talent. The team was directed by Head Coach Vin Bettina and Assistant Coaches Ralph Steffanci, Jack Maher and Joe McRay. Although the team lost the 1979 DCSL Championship 15-14, the season was a success because six school records were broken. The team also contributed 9 DCSL nominees. Beacon's soccer team, coached by Bob Samuelson and Tom Powers, had a very good season. This team, basically made up of sophomores and freshmen, was a team of inexperience. This inexperience showed in the beginning of the season when they lost three of their first four games, but as the season wore on this team's talent really showed through. They won or tied four of their last five games, finishing the season with a record of 4- 4-1. The 1979-1980 Cross Country harriers completed a 3-5 rebuilding season. At the 1980 Sports Banquet, Roy Lyman received Most Valuable Runner honors while Sands Frost was chosen as the Most Improved Harrier. Peter Baumgartner won the Academic-Athletic Award. Other letter winners for the team included Howard Riggs and Michael Merritt. The Beacon Harriers are coached by Jose M. Rodriguez; in his third year. Happy, noisy spirits haunt the lunchroom and the gym. Pensive spirits haunt the classrooms and the library. Spirits of different temperaments even haunt the windowsills, doorways and lockers. Occasionally, the spirits of boredom and discontent creep up, but they don't haunt anyplace for very long. Since students spend 90% of their school day sitting, it's a position they have to get used to. Students practice this posture when they study, listen, eat their lunches or, in some cases, sleep. However, it may be a good thing that students don't have to learn lying down. 147 BHS provides outlets for a diversity of interests. Students can experience rowdy togetherness by participating in a pep rally, or peaceful solitude by composing their own melodies in the music room. They can congregate in the library to study, or in the lounge to talk and relax. Whether you're in the mood for running, singing, reading, learning or just talking, BHS has a place for you. On Thursday, November 15, Beacon High School's chapter of the National Honor Society held its annual induction. A total of 72 members were inducted on either a permanent or probationary basis. The candlelight ceremony was conducted by Mrs. Helen Savoit, advisor; Leon Cochrane, president; Peter Baumgartner, vice-president; Angela Hayden, secretary and Raymond Chaisson, treasurer. Principal George Billups was also present to extend his congratulations to the inductees. Refreshments were served afterwards in the lounge. Almost every student at BHS has his or her own special hangout. Some students spend their free time in the library leafing through the sports section, while others go to the music room to sing to their hearts desire. Others find their nook in a favorite windowsill, or on the roof of their friend's car. A few even prefer to do all their hanging out in the classrooms. We gather together in large groups to cheer on our teams and learn from our teachers .. . We gather together in small groups to laugh, talk, study and eat lunch , . . This Halloween BHS was invaded by monsters, tramps, clowns, dolls, babies, animals, soldiers, Mickey and Minnie Mouse and Snow White and the six dwarfs. These trick-or- treaters got into the spirit by participating in the school's first annual Halloween Costume Contest sponsored by the Student Council. Each participant was asked to donate a dollar to the Multiple Sclerosis Association. Everyone had fun and a worthy cause benefitted. The BHS lunchroom offers a large variety of delicacies for students to munch and crunch on,—fabulous french fries, heavenly hamburgers, buttery bagels, assorted sandwiches and crisp cookies and chips. Students who are able to overlook the long lines, noise, shortage of plates and sometimes soiled tables find they can spend a leisurely 45 minutes lunching with their friends. The classes competed in decking the halls in an array of blue, gold, football players, cheerleaders and bulldogs. The juniors' decorations were judged to be the most spiritful by the Booster Club. The student body had fun dressing up for Dress-Up Day, Fifties Day, Mismatch and Hat Day, and Blue-and-Gold Day. The week came to an end with an enthusiastic pep rally Friday afternoon and a dance Saturday evening. 168 The Homecoming Game against John Jay, scheduled for Saturday, was washed up due to pouring rain and rescheduled for Monday. However, it was well worth the wait. A large crowd gathered to cheer the Bulldogs on to victory. During half-time the Beacon Band and Bullettes performed. The winner of the Homecoming Queen Contest, Sheryl Genco, was also announced. Gail Romanelli and Jackie Conine were named as attendants. And the Bulldogs slaughtered the Patriots. J ‘V f- ane in the (J3ach Windows are clearly made to look through. At least that's what most people think. From the way the students at BHS use windows however, you'd think they have eyes in the back of their heads! If you walk up and down the halls, you can see people with their backs to windows, bottoms to windows, hands and feet to windows — anything but their eyes. However, when you walk into a classroom, a strange transformation takes place. Suddenly, students can't seem to take their eyes off the windows. 170 Good Luck Marisa!
