These days have had their moments; some I’ll not forget, Days all full and happy and spent in wonderment. Now images of Future begin to fill one’s head Because at last our time has come: we have to move ahead. And so now many lives will start to shape and to take form; It’s time to take our places, the reason for which we’re born. So all you fine, good students, remember good and well The times that seemed so pleasureable and the times that seemed like hell. And then if you can remember, you’ll have a treasure rare: Something you can touch and see that you will want to share. That is the question. 89 JOHN GAUQUIE HISTORY Believe It Or Not William the Conqueror was of the House of Lemons, no? So goes a typical day in Mr. Warren’s history class. If, by some strange miracle, we graduate to American History we learn to remove the pictures of Washington and Roosevelt that hang in our rooms. The Bulldogs finally made it a winning season after showing a sluggish start. What could make things difficult was that the Bulldogs gave away height by losing their taller players to graduation. A more important fact is that of Jerome Williamson s departure. The Bulldogs indeed have a quick team made up of returning lettermen Charlie Fryar, Paul Sellers. Joe Powell and Mike Thorpe. Rounding out the team are Phil Knight, Rich Matthews, Jack Mitchell, Bob Barksdale, and Curt Thompson. An overall effort by the midget Bulldogs are likely to produce some surprising results. 112 Photos: Courtesy of Wesley F. (Bo) Gill BASEBALL “Batter-Up” A preview of thi9 season's Bulldogs should be entirely a new squad. With all lettermen gone from the last two years, the team hopes to bounce back from a disappointing 5-13 season by using many players from the last year’s plentiful Junior Varsity team. Ken Markarian. Dave Eraca, and Dave Secore fill the pitching rotation while Bob Cunningham and Jim Scully will fill the outfield positions. 113 VARSITY FOOTBALL Row 1: Michael Faison, Bob Cunningham, Billy Sampson, Moe Baxter, Jim Wassman, Paul Salvas. The Bulldogs, headed by Art Smith, are in the midst of a rebuilding year. The gallant Blue and Gold eleven produced some sparkling performances despite not having won a game all season long. The Bulldogs, anchored by all-DCSL candidates Bob Cunningham and Larry Kilduff were no longer getting clobbered by such lopsided scores. The Bulldogs’ defensive unit kept the team in contention for most of the season, but plagued with a lack of offensive punch, cost them many victories. Nonetheless, the Bulldogs gave a valiant effort which might revive the team in the coming season. The Bulldogs have a team which should finally do this time. Divided We Stand, United We Fall This year's team of grapplers are in short supply but their overall enthusiasm and team spirit are not on the short side. Coach Fred Merz's Bulldogs have some returning veterans in Brian Mortenson. Mike Davis. Under the direction of Mr. Cyrus Vaughn, seven girls entertained football fans during half time with several routines while ac- companied by our glorious band. On different occasions our twirlers have par- ticipated in parades in Beacon and other cities. May these girls twirl on to higher achievements. 117 CHEERLEADERS Rhonda Bugg 2,3,4. It can be certainly another good year for the Bulldogs. 19 ORGANIZATIONS 21 STUDENT ASSOCIATION “A Better Way to Build the U.S.A.” “Under the leadership of Karen Cochrane, the Student Association is the strongest government possible under current conditions. It is composed of students who excel in these qualities. With Mrs. Lorraine Koverda as their advisor, the society traveled to Castle Point this Christmas to decorate and sing carols to the patients. The club also put on a play for the younger members of the community which was written, directed, and performed by members of the club. The French Club is an organization which aims to provide financial aid to students interested in going to France this summer and studying the language for a period of six weeks. It is supervised by Mr. Peter Klensch. In raising money it has also provided the school with several dances and a French folk concert which was open to the entire community. The Club has introduced a new method of studying to our school. It hopes a continual program will be set up and include more countries and a greater variety of courses. This will enable more students to enjoy the program. Row 1: Shelly Dennison. Jo Ann Seaman. Row 2: Janice Ager, Linda Johnan. Kim Mac Avery. Sue Miller, Theresa Provenzano, Ethel Clauson. Last year the team had a fine record of 9 wins and 2 losses against teams from Newburgh. Poughkeepsie, Roosevelt. Ketcham. and John Jay. If the fine play of Dave Lawson. This group went on retreats to Montreal and Pawling where they rapped with the aid of an educational psychologist. They also spent the good part of six weeks meeting informally to discuss problems at B. H. S. The original twelve members swelled to fifty-two in the fall of 1971 and several teachers also joined the ranks. The results were outstanding: our student activities calendar was full through the year, and rap sessions occurred frequently. They have been busy this year with their advisor. Mrs. Gloria Lane, visiting such places as the colleges Hartwick and Oneonta. Also this year these students have observed and participated in the instruction of the pupils of other schools, and of course, our own Beacon High. This year the club unlocked its doors to admit the letter-winning athletic girls of Beacon High. Under the supervision of Mr. James Gauriloff, the club provides the con- cession stands at football and basket- ball games, presents jackets to the senior athletes, and lends financial support to other clubs. This year the Varsity Club has been a great help to the Ski Team by selling candy. 133 VARSITY CHORUS AND CHOIR Sing Along with Gene Under the fantastic patience of Mr. Gene Klein, Chorus has done much more activities this year. They even put on a Christmas Concert. They also were in our musical. Oklahoma. Choir also performed at all of these affairs. Best of all. Choir went to Ratings. Choir is available to students who are especially interested in singing, whereas by taking Chorus, one can receive a credit. Those are about the only words we of the yearbook staff were unable to use in our feature spot this year. Starting off with a remembrance of the past with our oldie s but goodie’s dance, we got right into the swing of the nostalgic age by the reproduction of some of the original recordings of the old greats like Elvis Presley, Little Anthony and the Imperials, Chubby Checker and many, many more. Another nostalgic fact for all of you old time bobby-sockers was that this was the first open dance Beacon High had seen since the time those hits were on the top ten! Progressing from nostalgia to today saw the staff sponsoring a Pete Seeger-Jimi Collier Concert where folk and modern songs from every part of the country were sung. Mr. Seeger expressed his concern for the area we live in and his final sing along. “This Land Is Your Land”, brought the crowd to its feet with a standing ovation. Being the humble group we are, we would never go so far as to say that we would provide great entertainment in Bob Hope s Christmas Special, but there’s an awful lot of people walking around with sunglasses on lately. 7 YEARBOOK STAFF Where’s the Pickled Pica? As if out of the days of the “Untouchables we lurked in room 106 every Friday night. With our top secret plans for “Fantasia 72 safely guarded by Mr. T. our operation was in full swing. Filing down the pica rulers under the watchful eyes of Dave the Dingbat and Chesca the Chimp, the gang ran off layout after layout, in stacks of crisp, clean, twenties. Trying to keep our cover, we survived on rations of mushroom pizza and 7-up for the duration of our operation. Everyone feared, however, the day of truth, the final deadline. As if it were a raid, our hearts beat ever so fast as the order came down from “The Boss , “Get those pictures!” Now as we look back on it all, at Bernie the Bomber. Knuckles Keenan. Revolver Roe. and all the rest who made Fantasia what she is today, we can ask ourselves one question “Do they really belong to Assylums Annonymous? 147 151 153 154 155 158 159 160 162 163 In Loving Memory Of Qiane y (. 0 rr who radiated joy and love throughout her life.
