agclgffi 0 agzii e In the obscurity of historical past, we were able to recover a fragment of the story of a very select group of knights and maidens. The parchment on which it was recorded is yellowed and faded with age, but here is what our experts were able to assemble. The year is 1950 A.D. Many smallish squires and lasses have come to Bayside Castle to receive an education from the queen's own public tutors. The tutors are of the rarest type, and provide much amusement as well as education. The language department seems especially hot Qas the dialect of such times would have expressed itj. From there we hear much talk of roto-rooters and stamp pads reading I told you sof' The French teachers, born Crusaders for most anything, are constantly becoming extremely warm under the collar about such things as Communism, wheat germ, and Hthis wretched progressive educationf' History teachers continually remind their students that they are not allowed to talk politics in class, and yet, by the end of the term, there are few students who could not quote from memory, the political beliefs of their teacher. From individual corners, other teachers take stands on such topics as: The Value of the Deep- Knee Bend in Public Education, Why Teenagers Should Hold a Telephone Book Between Their Lips Wlhen They Kiss, and Why You Should Own a Cocker Spaniel, Sonny. Under the supreme leadership of Apothecary Crane, the little ones are carried through their first year without event, but during the sophomore year. the exclusive groups begin to appear. The most noticeable group is The Order of the Hoods. This is a small group of boys, lovely little knights, who delight in walking as if they were in a strong draft. Their collars are up, their trousers are tied at the ankles, and their faces are pained. Then, of course, there is the in- evitable middle group, comprised of just plain, average students. The leaders of this class have not quite come into focus, but they are dehnitely there. Already there are solid statesmen leading various organizations, cool cats making the educational jungle jump with swing, and powerful sportsmen bringing home the hardware. Suddenly, there is the roar of many drums, and all shudder as the Korean War begins. The third year of this unique class is a busy one. Apothecary Crane gives way to Apothecary Moskowitz, who is immediately accused by a few mentally dencient churls of wanting to change the school into a prison. They soon learn, though, that the new Principal knows how to handle people and organizations, and the school is improved, slowly but surely. The ban on extra-curricular activities is withdrawn, and the student body shifts into high. Teams begin to Twelve

make a name for themselves, clubs become bigger and stronger, and a rather unheard of little thing begins to squeak. For now, we shall call this thing school spirit. A beauty contest inspires all the males in the school and they begin to sing. Dry Bonesn by the Boys' Chorus makes the auditorium jump. The big Jamboree turns the school into a house of merriment, and brings the class' Junior year to a happy conclusion. In September this group becomes The Terrible, feared and bowed to by all other classes .... Seniors! l l The little squeak has been fed quite a bit by now, and it has the earmarks of a loud, exultant shout. A pep rally held before school shows that the shout is more than noise, The teams, receiving this shout as a sponge receives water, take heart. Six Bayside swimmers make the All-City team, and the Basketball Commodores play in Madison Square Garden. The Nights of ftfusic, held in the spring for a change, sends the whole community swooning with admiration and respect. The Jamboree is the last big event for the seniors before they begin to prepare for the big day in June. The big day finally arrives, and we see the members of this group quietly accepting their diplomas. As they file on stage, we can actually read the school's past on their faces. He recognize the look of the sports hero, the look of the Baysider Staff member, the look of the Arista member, the look of the club enthusiast. The looks are all alike for the most part, for they all have been subjected to about the same atmosphere . . . the same teachers, the same park, the same bagel man, the same buses, the same school. They have experienced the same happenings . . . the dungaree affair, the fraternity-sorority affair, the take cover drills. the dances, the tense midterm and regents periods, the games, the G.O. campaigns, the happy summer vacations. The lads and lasses are Knights and Maidens now, and Bayside has seen them through their adolescent years . . . their maturing years, and is so much a part of their new life, that it is not hard to understand why we sec tears on their faces on this last day.
