While sfumbling over piles of luggage, dirTy-faced Ii++Ie kiddies and Too many people, we were rescued by Lora, who had broughT all This annoying business on us by inviTing us up for The week-end. ChaTTering gaily, as is her habiT, she led The way To one of many sTaTion-wagons where we were sTuffed in wiTh five oTher guesTs, Two scoTTies and an un- godly amounT of baggage. In This informal sTaTe we were driven To l.ora's humble abode, which proved To be a Ii++Ie fiffeen-room shack siTTing on The fronT side of a mounfain. We had hardly SAT fooT on The fronT sTep when a flood of peo- plile submerged us wiTh The usual formalifies of welcome. I looked hopelessly aT brofher Tod, whiIsT our minds, like Two well-oiled machines, in- sTanTly reverfed To The giIT-edged inviTaTion . . . iusf a cozy liffle week-end wiTh a few friends. . . . JusT abouf as cozy as The Grand CenTraI STaTion. Borne upon This human wave we even- Tually landed in The library, where Lora began The Trials and TribulaTions of inTroducTion. In no Time aT all we were acquainfed wiTh a Prince Leonidoff who was badly in need of a haircuT, and Three square meals a day: Sarah Read Sloan, who wrifes chiIdren's books and looked like The Before picTure of one of Those Before and AfTer adverfisemenfsg Lennox Deveney, a vio- IinisT . . . When iT was all over we wenT up To our rooms To recuperaTe. I grafefully fell asleep, only To be awakened aT 4:00 for Tea. AT The Top of The sfairs I meT my broTher looking grim and moan- ing: Oh lord, how can we go Through wiTh This! lmmediaTely we were seized by Lora wiTh Two more of her priceless colIecTion in Tow. This is Dana Ashley, she said, he painfed Ma- donnas for seven years and mermaids for Three and Then gave up and wenf To Poland. And This, very proudly, is whaT he broughT back. Dana managed To look pained, as Lora Turned To a long, rangy looking individual wiTh a droopy haT, shiny face and horn-rimmed glasses. One of heaIThy, ouT-doorish Types who go so well wifh aufumn scenery. This is Deborah Crowell. When They were swallowed up in The Throng, Lora confided ThaT The Crowell person had so many degrees she was Llop-sided. Tea Time passed inTo oblivion wiTh a heafed discussion of Picasso, The Ivling DynasTy and Kafherine Cornell. Finally dinner sneaked up on us, and I found myself seaTed nexT To a Frenchman named Andre Loire, who couldn'T speak a word of English IThank heavensl. Our conversaTion consisfed mainly of: Passez-moi la viande, s'iI vous plaiT and CeTTe soupe esT Tres bonne, n'esT-ce pas? On my IefT was a Russian prince. We were gef- Ting along admirably unTil I happened To menfion ThaT I didn'T parficularly like Rachmaninoff's CanTaTa, Spring From Then on Things wenf from worse To worse, and in abouT Ten minufes we were aT The cream-puffs-aT-Twenfy-paces sTage. She was nicknamed SguiTfy and I.ora's sisTer-in-law, Elaine, who was looking very languid and had one of Those husky, world-weary voices. To say The leasr, The poor chap looked desperaTe II was seriously Thinking of yelling Fire I. The end finally came and we adiourned To The library where we spenf The resT of The evening playing bridge, alThough some of Them were engaged in The infelligenr occupafion of Trying To Tear a ConnecTicuT Telephone book in half. I reTired from acTive compeTiTion when They began anew on a Sears-Roebuck caTaIogue. Safurday morning dawned brighT and clear wiTh breakfasf aT eighT-ThirTy. Andre engaged himself in animaTed conversaTion wiTh The Rus- sian acfress, who was looking even droopier Than usual over a grapefruif. Tod was discussing archiTecTure wiTh Ashley and siTTing nexT To Elaine, who was Trying To look languid in riding cIoThes and wasn'T succeeding very well. Had a Wonderful Time lConTinued Trom Page 9l Nebraska or wherever she came Trom, To pick up a couple oT degrees she nearly overlooked. ATTer breakTasT everybody wenT horseback riding. His Royal Highness was up on lrish Rebellion, which nearly caused an lnTernaTional SiTuaTion. Tod and I sysTemaTically losT every- one buT The Frenchman. We had a marvelous Time unTil luncheon. MosT oT Them Took ThaT oTT The manTle, including The Prince, who was almosT posiTive he had been a Hussar or a Royal Cavaly- man once. Lunch over we all wenT To The The- aTre . . . aT leasT iT kepT Them guieT Tor a while. Dinner passed wiThouT any maior mishaps and was Tollowed by The usual workouT aT The bridge Table. We awakened The nexT morning To a Typical New England SabbaTh. The counTryside lying complacenTly under a nighT's Tall OT snow, and a perTecT blue sky . . . in The disTance, The genTle sound oT The bells oT ST. Gabriel's Chapel ringing clear across The sTill, whiTe hills. This sublime Teeling was immediaTely dispelled by a very unholy noise which wrecked The morning quieT NiTh iTs vague suggesTion oT Pagliacci under a shower. We could sTill hear The sTruggle oT naTure in The roar as we drove OTT To mass. The anTi-climax came when we arrived home and were Told ThaT The cook was ill wiTh The mis'ry . . . ThaT was noThing To whaT we had when Lora, The Russian acTress, and Dana broughT Their idea oT a breakTasT: TomaTo iuice, bleeny lpancakes wiTh sour cream and caviarl, weak coTTee ThaT TasTed like someThing you'd polish TurniTure wiTh, and Two kinds oT ToasT . .. black and burned! Class Prophecy lConTinued Trom Page 8l maTinee idols, William O'KeeTe and Howard An- derson. My! Times cerTainly have changed since Those good old school days. We have wiTh us The Tamous aviaTor, John DeBevoise, who is accompanied by Miss Gene Roundey, his able assisTanT. We didn'T geT back inTo circulaTion again unTil laTe in The aTTernoon when we wenT skiing on The mounTain in Lora's backyard, wiTh The ex- cepTion oT STew, who sTayed home and played The Danse Macabre all aTTernoon on The piano. We had a loT oT Tun and came home wiTh The ineviTable rosy cheeks and sniTTles. Elaine spenT mosT oT The evening in her room because she couldn'T very well be languorous wiTh a red nose and waTery eyes. The prince was also conTined To his room wiTh a musTard baTh and a game oT soliTaire while we played ping-pong and bridge, argued over French drama and TooTball. This was The beginning oT a beauTiTul Triendship. By midnighT we were ''unTil-deaTh-do-us-parT com- rades and no one seemed To mind Dana, who played The Blue Danube over and over on a sTray piccolo, or Elaine who Tinally showed down in a pair oT kelly green paiarnas and a purple Tlannel baTh robe. They even overlooked Lennox who spoke in a superior voice oT a number oT VanderbilTs as if he knew Them. Everybody was awTully happy Talking all aT once abouT Themselves, and were guiTe regreTTul when cur- Tew rang and They had To reTire Tor whaT was leTT oT The nighT. Monday-The day oT parTing-dawned, and The morning passed in a Trenzy OT breakTasT, packing and Touching Tarewells. We were near- ly laTe Tor The Train and iT was necessary To dash madly over The ConnecTicuT counTryside, nar- rowly missing several chickens and a cow which evidenTly didn'T realize ThaT The besT Thing abouT ConnecTicuT is The Train back To New York. Those personaliTy ladies, Miss DoroThy Marvin, Miss Helen Bradley, and Miss RuTh Shoninger, are coming in as The meeTing is abouT To begin. l do hope we succeed in securing an aThleTic Tield beTore Ten more years elapse lmaybe morel.
