OUR FOOTBALL HISTORY It was way back in 1946 that football was first started in our high school. Who first thought of the idea isn't important; the fact that is important is that we were given the starting push. In our first season of football we had Mort Murphy as coach, and although things weren't too promising at times, he still believed and had faith in the players Just as the students did. The individual stars for this season, 47-48, were Gordon Tibbitts, Captain, and Francis Halstead. The 43-49 season pops up and we find a new leader as coach for our team. His name is Jim Flower. The individual stars for this season were Ray Horning and Captain Earl Seawall, now a member of the Air Force. The 49-50 season rolls around and little by little more Interest is being shown toward football. This season we had Floyd Sorenson as a coach; if you think back a few years you will remember that he stayed with us for the 50-51 season also. For the 49-50 season we chose a number of players as individual stars-the choosing was difficult because they were all very good players. Captain for this season was Ray Halstead. Individual stars were Bob Nichols, Bob Streit, Dave Nichols, and Bill Leschuck. During the 50-51 season Ronny Elliot was the outstanding player and Captain of the football team. The 51-52 football season is here and we again have a new coach—his name is Phillip Hadley, a young man Just fresh out of college. This season they couldn't choose a captain because two boys on the team were so outstanding that we had Co-Captains Dick DeYoung and Wally Adams. During the 52-53 season Mr. Phillip Hadley was again chosen as a leader for our team. Outstanding players were Ken Spooner, Jim Bergin and Wendel Calhoun. In 53-54, our last year in school, we find football very exciting. The students follow the team with hearts filled with happiness as we complete the most successful season yet. We Had Phillip Hadley as coach again. The individual stars—well we haven't heard any special ones mentioned so along with Captain Jim Wilbrandt-we are naming all the senior football players as individual stars. We hope that all the future seasons will be as successful as or more successful than this past season has been. 40 The Heacon Staff of 54
