THAI K Like OP Man River, Bayonne High Track Team, just keeps rolling along, winning more championships ami producing new great runners each year. As illustrated by its brilliant record, the Bayonne squad of 1946-'47 is no eccption to the perennial rule. In the line of championships, Loach George Buttner's team gained its seventh national championship in five years, beating all rivals in the two mile relay event at Madison Square Garden, February 22, 1947. Two more state championships crosscountry, and Public High School Track and Field, were also won by B.H.S. during the post season. Although not a titular accomplishment, the history-making upset of West Point's Plebe team is indeed a noteworthy achievement of this year's varsity. The one event, that overshadowed all others of the season, was the appearance of Curran, a new Bayonne prodigy, to follow in the great tradition of such stars as John Serrie, Ed Sausc, and Hall Youmans. Bill Curran made his mark in the world of sports at the Knights of Columbus meet at Madison Square Garden, March 9, 46. In the mile relay Curran received the baton from his team mate, Dick Stelljes, about 70 yards Indiind the leading team. 'The fleet runner reeled off a brilliant 495 quarter mile, the fastest time made during the season, and brought a wildly cheering Carden crowd to its feet. It was this performance that prompted that headline— “Curran Hailed as (under Great in Bayonne Facts March 15, 1946. March 15, Newark Sunday Call wrote “Watch Track Records. Bill Curran of Bayonne is on his way. On June 28, at San Antonio, Texas Curran became one of the few school boys ever to win an A.A.U. National Championship. He won the National Junior 800 meter title, scoring a major upset. Curran accomplished this extraordinary feat despite an injury received at the start of the race. Curran has covered the half mile in 1:55 seconds; five tenths of a second slower than the U.S. Scholastic record. He has won the indoor and outdoor state half mile title, establishing a new record of 1:57.7 in the outdoor race.
