With awareness of the ways in which education is put into circulation, and of the light it casts beyond its own immediate boundaries, the eyes of our nation have been turned toward schools and colleges for the repaving of a road hack to happiness for the American youth. As a part payment of our nation's debt to veterans, the G.I. Bill of Rights is offering opportunities for free education, regardless of one's intellectual calling. Scientists who had the ability to control the forces of nature, and to produce atom bombs, and the many substitutes that were used during the war, demonstrated in part, the power and advantages of education. As graduates, we realize that it is an apprenticeship of life. It is a friend in our homes, an introduction to the world, and an asset in society. Atom bombs which fused all nations, leave no room for the uneducated or the unprepared. In the world of tomorrow, the weak will he lost in the overwhelming tide of advancement. ROBINSON At tributes reflected in his gracious simplicity of manner, his kindly human understanding, and his sympathetic interest in all school activities have won for I)r. Robinson the companionship and love of the students of Bayonne High School. In 1942, he answered America’s call for lighting men, but his keen intellect made him more valuable on the exam- ining hoard of the training division of the Naval Air Corps than on the fields of battle. In 1945, he resumed his duties as Principal, but within a year, in recognition of tasks well done, he was given another; that of Dean of the first Junior College of Bayonne. May his ideals and aspirations remain lofty; his ambitions Ik realized; ami his determinations be carried out. In Junior College may he triumph as an honored citizen, ami a former service man. MR. BOSS! I ART State Commissioner of Education 8 MR. JOHN J. MULLEN To Bayonne High School, Mr. Mullen came as no stranger. During World War II, he served as acting Principal in Doctor Hohinson's place. The welcome that he received when he assumed his duties in 1946 was given in a special way; not with cheers or applause, hut with respect. mJMCATIO.Y . . . Mr. Mullen was well equipped, and so capably handled the position, that the advancement of his predecessor to the Junior College, left Mr. Mullen the logical man for the Senior High School. His warmth of heart and his ability in meeting problems have made him an able leader. By his strong interest in all that concerns the welfare of the school, Mr. Mullen has made his presence felt. He has won the reputation of possessing dignity, and a dominant personality. May his integrity of life, his earnestness of endeavor, and his quality of achievement, add a brilliant chapter to the history of the school. Principal. Such knowledge will open the portals of learning to the world in which you live.” It is a world that needs trained men and women: therefore, 1 congratulate you for having made one more investment in knowledge that will bring dividends. From this day forth, each student's path in life will he of his own choosing. Some may enter the business world; others may go to college, especially to our Junior College, which is one of the recent experiments in American education, to fill a community need in Bayonne City. Never in the history of the universe have educated minds been more in demand. We are endeavoring to meet that demand by preparing young people for significant service. Our Junior College offers additional opportunity for higher education that will enable ambitious people to become responsible participants in city affairs. The Junior College is coeducational. Its chief purpose is to give a two year program that will prepare college-minded students for a transfer to higher institutions. It will meet the practical needs of those who do not desire, or cannot afford four years of college. It helps those who are too young to obtain the best values of a four year college. It also offers terminal courses for students who can attend for only two years. The well-rounded program that high school has given will make of you desirable citizens; and. with higher education at your disposal, the world has a right to expect of you clear thinking and intelligent leadership. May each of you realize that it is a moral obligation to make the most of life. May each one reach his goal. The Congress has grown steadily since 1939 by stimulating more active and closer co-operation between teachers and students. It has been fortunate each year in having a student body that has wisely chosen capable leaders. As well as continuing many of the splendid projects started in previous Congresses, this year under President Paul Luedtke, the Congress has promoted an all inclusive Student Activities ticket, the first annual Bayonne High School Track Meet, intermural basketball and baseball teams, and has financed the restoration of a larger Student Handbook. The Student Congress has been proud of its record during the war years, and is looking forward to continued growth in worthwhile services and activities in this post war period. It is composed of representatives from senior registration classes. Its chief object is to direct the various committees in such activities as assemblies, the popularity contest. Senior dance. Class Day, Prom, ordering of rings, caps ami gowns, and the selecting of a gift for the school. Council activities call for unity, organization, and cooperation, and they test students ability to adjust themselves to life situations. These remarks have a familiar ring in Hoorn C-5, the press room of the “Beacon”, our high school newspaper. During free periods, after school, and on the night before the publication of each of the eight papers issued in a school year, the staff members work on articles and on newspaper makeup to insure journalistic excellence in “The Beacon”. The staff was signally honored by the C.S.P.A.'s selection of five Bayonne delegates from among 3500 national delegates at the March Convention in New York, to interview District Attorney Hogan of New York, and to w rite a convention release for the United Press. A candidate for the Ushers Force must have satisfactory study and attitude marks. He must secure the approval of the registration teacher, and then file an application hearing the endorsement of every class teacher. Those who are accepted, are assigned to posts, and there direct and expedite traffic during the change of classes. They must keep the corridors free of people who do not possess ofTicial school passes. In clothing, a phase of Home Economics, students are trained in purchasing, designing, ami making wearing apparel that is simple and serviceable. These slips are separated according to districts, and are sent to attendance officers who visit homes. BEAUTY CULTURE Advisors: Miss O'Hare and Mrs. Whitehead of Teehnieal Hi(th. Beauty Culture students study the scalp, the texture of the hair, skin diseases, facial nerves, muscles and hones. Theory precedes practice. Operators work on each other. 94 HOME NURSING Advisor: Clara L. Prentiss, R.N. Even though the war is over, there still is a need for knowledge in Home Nursing. Students are trained to meet emergencies, safeguard family health, and give care under the guidance of a physician. FIRST AID Advisors: Mary B. Wueherer, Ann McKechnie First Aid acquaints students with sufficient knowledge to determine the nature and extent of an injury. It trains them to do the proper thing at the proper time. SAFETY Advisor: Miss Givens. In safely classes students urc made familiar with, and are taught how to operate an automobile. Motor vehicle law that enable them pass the examination for drivers' licenses are taught. PHOTOGRAPHY Advisor: Oscar Bodenhorn. Photography club trains students in the essentials of photographic work. As illustrated by its brilliant record, the Bayonne squad of 1946-'47 is no eccption to the perennial rule. In the line of championships, Loach George Buttner's team gained its seventh national championship in five years, beating all rivals in the two mile relay event at Madison Square Garden, February 22, 1947. Two more state championships crosscountry, and Public High School Track and Field, were also won by B.H.S. during the post season. Although not a titular accomplishment, the history-making upset of West Point's Plebe team is indeed a noteworthy achievement of this year's varsity. The one event, that overshadowed all others of the season, was the appearance of Curran, a new Bayonne prodigy, to follow in the great tradition of such stars as John Serrie, Ed Sausc, and Hall Youmans. Bill Curran made his mark in the world of sports at the Knights of Columbus meet at Madison Square Garden, March 9, 46. In the mile relay Curran received the baton from his team mate, Dick Stelljes, about 70 yards Indiind the leading team. 'The fleet runner reeled off a brilliant 495 quarter mile, the fastest time made during the season, and brought a wildly cheering Carden crowd to its feet. It was this performance that prompted that headline— “Curran Hailed as (under Great in Bayonne Facts March 15, 1946. March 15, Newark Sunday Call wrote “Watch Track Records. Bill Curran of Bayonne is on his way. On June 28, at San Antonio, Texas Curran became one of the few school boys ever to win an A.A.U. National Championship. He won the National Junior 800 meter title, scoring a major upset. Curran accomplished this extraordinary feat despite an injury received at the start of the race. Curran has covered the half mile in 1:55 seconds; five tenths of a second slower than the U.S. Scholastic record. He has won the indoor and outdoor state half mile title, establishing a new record of 1:57.7 in the outdoor race. Under the able tutelage of Coach Haring, they managed to chalk up a score of 2 wins, 1 tie and 4 losses. The team displayed power when they met Emerson on the official opening day, but in the second game they went down to defeat to the Memorials, who scored 38 to B. H. S.—0. The three following games were a repetition of the second. In the sixth game, with Demerest, the Garnets made a star score of 22-0, which saved their reputation. The final game, a tie with Technical High, was another face saver. Coach Haring claims that in the new team, he has discovered promising football material for a successful 1948 season. Coach Billy Lee managed to lead the members through a successful season of 11 wins and 3 losses. With the few veteran sluggers to help, the hoys aimed for the championship, but were defeated by Memorial High School of West New York, in the semi-finals of the H.C.I.S.B.L., at I nion City Roosevelt Stadium. The fighting machinery of the Garnets has been re-conditioned, therefore, there are hopes of a victorious comback in 1947. Of the 19 games on the schedule, B.H.S. won 7. They made a hreatli-taking start hy defeating Holy Family to the tune of 36-16. The next three games were a loss to the Garnet and White, hut they made a comeback when they met Dickinson. As the scores indicate, their playing was unpredictable. The tossing of halls into baskets should have been easy, and with more practice, we feel certain that with four players over 6 feet 1, and one who is 6 feet 4, next year's team should reach stardom. Ray Chakey demonstrated amazing speed, and Alan Mercer, with his dead eye, saved many a game. Mercer has zip and aggressiveness that are invaluable assets. Despite losses, and the fact that Clifton nosed B.H.S. out of the finals, the team displayed evidence of future success. TANKMEN Although (loach Harrison developed a well rounded swimming combination for the season, the Garnet ami White Natators, who displayed potential power, were unable to defeate their rivals. They entered into competition early in January 1947, ami went through a gruelling schedule by competing against such schools as Plainfield, Lincoln, Dickinson, Newark Academy, and Seton Hall. 'fhe letters winners for 1947 were: Furce, the highest scorer, who swam in the 200 yard free style contest. Gerald Slootsky, who won second place in the 50 and 100 yd. contests. Neil Dillon, a third ranking breast stroke swimmer, ami Stanley Susskind, who was an able assistant for Furce in the back-stroke contest. Non-record members: J. Crimaldi, A. Barscli, J. Margrass. TENNIS The Tennis Team, under guidance of (loach Teppcr and Manager Seclow, has as its goal the South Hudson Championship which it won, hut lost to a powerful Weehawkcn combine. In addition to the regular schedule, the B.H.S. players competed with the taut teams from DeWitt (Hinton in New York, and Blair Academy.
