BASIC AKHONAUTI.CS CLASS On February 3, 1942 a course in Basic Aeronautics, popularly known as the Air Cadet Course, was instituted in Bayonne High School by Dr. Howard 1 .. Merity, Superintendent of Schools, and Dr. Walter F. Robinson. Principal of Senior High School. Mr. Isadore ChcrtofT, Mr. Alexander O’Connor and Mr. Charles Koren were assigned as instructors of the classes, and Dr. Robinson plans to assist jjerson-ally in the instruction when courses are further under way. Sixty boys from all departments of the school were selected and were divided into two sections which meet every day for two consecutive periods. Most of the students enrolled are Seniors alxnit eighteen years of age. Although the course was originally designed for l oys only, many girls expressed a desire to enroll in it. Because of the experimental nature of the program and the rapidity with which it was set up. the girls were not admitted. The young aviatrices, however, will Ik welcome in Septemlx r when the work will Ik expanded to cover a wider field. The sixty students now enrolled were chosen carefully on the basis of background and interests from double that mimher of applicants. They have made Room 323 a virtual arsenal of aeronautics. Model airplanes, navigation charts, instruments, and air magazines fill the room. Upon successful completion of the course, each student will receive one unit toward graduation credit. This can Ik done because Bayonne High School is among the first of Xew Jersey High Schools to be certified to teach aeronautics. The course of studies includes aerodynamics, meterology and navigation similar to that of the Civil Aeronautics Association plan. Worthwhile programs, highlighting prominent speakers, movies, and film slides have been planned to make the course as vital and efficient as possible. PJtncty
