Til K YKAR IX SPOUTS—Cont. W ITH THE GIRLS’ BASKETBALL TEAM The year 1942 saw an expanded program, and a spread of much greater interest in the Girls’ Basket Kill Team. The hig event of the season was the record breaking defeat of the Holy Family Team. Schedule Pate Team IPe They Dec. 19 Holy Family of Union City 26 25 Jan. 12 Alumnae 27 26 Jan. 24 Mt. H. S. track team in the past year. The Mile Relay Team (Sause, Hart. Keniery, and Sweeney) captured the state Indoor Title on March 7 and again walked off with the honors in the Hudson County Championships. Eddie Sause captured the 300-yard race at Jersey City Armory, setting a new record of thirty-four seconds. Continuing his sensational winning streak, he took the Northern New Jersey title in the quarter-mile race, the time being a new record of 50.8 seconds. Sause also captured the Hudson County Scholastic and Hudson County A. A. V. Titles in the times of 51.1 and 51.2 respectively. At the Stuyvcsant Manual Invitation Meet in the Bronx Coliseum. Sause set a new scholastic record by winning the 440-yard senior event in 50.4. The Relay Team, anchored by Sause. placed second in the National Championships at the Penn Relays. At Madison Square Garden, the team came in fourth in the contest with colleges and preparatory schools of the East Coast. In addition to Sause. the team was composed of Ed Keniery. city quarter-mile champion. Clyde Hart, flashy half-miler. known throughout the state, and Don Sweeney, city hundred-yard sprint sensation. Cross-country honors went to John Serrie and Les Youmans who placed second in the Senior County Championships and first in the Junior County Championships. IN THE POOL The Swimming Team opened the 1942 season on February 17 at the Junior High School pool by losing to the more e. | erienced Lincoln High ream. Individual members of the team, however, made excellent records. In the County Championship Meet held December 28 at Dickinson High. Bill Hanlon won two county championships by placing first in l oth the 50 and 100-yard free-style events. In these events. Bruce Tretheway placed third and second respectively. In the State Meet on March 7. Bayonne placed fifth. Hanlon placed fourth in the fifty and fifth in the one-hundred-yard free style events. Hanlon concluded the season by placing third in the National Scholastic Meet held on March 21 at Trenton. ON THE DIAMOND At the time the Year Book goes to press, the baseball season has not yet started, but Coach Lee has well-founded exj)ectations of putting out the usual hard hitting team that brings state-wide notice to Bayonne High School. TIIK YEAH IX SPOUTS ON THE GRIDIRON Starting from scratch. Coaches Lee and Haring built up a 1942 Garnet and W hite Team that will long he remembered in the annals of B. II. S. shirts. 'Flic offensive attack of the team centered alxmt the brilliant passing of Sal I.ucarrello. All-County Fullback, and flashy exhibition running of Eddie Sause and Frank Cuzy. This remarkable combination was aided ably by the fine blocking of Bill W arner. Eddie O'Neill. John Adomaitis and Bill Dzugan. All the credit for this record season, however, should not Ik given to the spirited offense of these grid-sters. The completely co-ordinated and machine like precision of the linesmen provided the vital defense necessary for victory. The loss of the first three out of five games did not daunt the spirits of either the Garnet and White mentor or the Cagers themselves. Rallying after defeat, they gave such a fine exhibition of fast stepping, skillful ball playing that they won the South Hudson County Division Championship for the fifth consecutive year. With this victory went the right to oppose Memorial High in the finals of the County playoff. After losing this thrilling contest, the Beaconeer courtmen entered the State Tournament winning two tough battles before going down to defeat before Memorial in the sectional finals. Enthusiastic rooters for the team will not soon forget the spectacular playing of Emil lludak. our All-State candidate, and the remarkable set-shooting of Marvin Isenberg.
