HOYS' GYMXASIIW! CLASSICS I he gymnasium classes provide a period »f necessary relaxation and physical exercises for the hoys. It i the opinion of both Mr. Daniel V ( aprio and Mr. I’hilip lepper. instructors in charge of the classes, that the stress should he laid on that type of exercise which will develop proper habits now and lay a basis for maintenance of good health in later life. Mertness and self-discipline are developed in the marching exercises which form a large part of their work. The emphasis laid oil marching has borne practical results. Many former students drafted into army service have been promoted almost immediately to the positions of corjxiral and sergeant because of their familiarity with the official military commands. Swiftly paced and exciting basketball, dodge ball, and hand soccer games serve the double purpose of exercise and relaxation which is the ever-present aim of their instructors. Ability in work on the long horse and parallel bars, on hand stands and shoulder stands are decisive factors in the rating of the students. At present both boys and girls are training intensively for the city wide Physical Kducation Kxhibition which is in charge of Mr. Daniel Caprio. DKAFTIXG DKPARTMKXT In these days when one hears so much ahoitt training for defense and about the need for skilled craftsmen in all fields, the work done in the Drafting Room under the supervision of Mr. Joseph Devine assumes great value. The students are here initiated into the mysteries of the art of blue-printing. Approximately one hundred seventy five pupils use this room daily. The students not only take care of their own work but are busy making signs, posters, and graphs for other departments. During this term twelve of our students have been placed in industrial plants as a result of the training received here. In their work in mechanical drawing and blue-printing, the students make a practical application of the knowledge gained in their classes in mathematics and other related subjects. MAXUAL TRAINING CLASSKS I he manual training classes meet three times per week. Most of the students who are enrolled in the I’radical and bine rts Course work in concentrated units of two or three periods daily. The shop is equipped with everything necessary to perfect the skill of these ambitious craftsmen. I'nder the direction of Mr. dolph Muller, City Supervisor of Manual Training, the students work on an individual basis, fashioning those things in which each is interested. In addition to their individual projects such as coffee tables, end tables, chess and checker boards, roller skate lioxcs etc., the classes repair school furniture. Sixty-txvo
