A few of these teachers also inspire thought and curiosity in their students, forcing them to gain that most valuable of abilities, independent thought. The recipient of this year's dedication not only places a desire in each student to learn, but he also teaches the student to teach himself. His sharp wit and wry sense of humor are complemented by his lucid insight into hu- man nature, providing him with the ability to identify characteristics in his pupils that facilitate academic growth. For all these reasons, we, the editors of the 1988 Klif Klan, are honored to dedicate this volume to Dr. Robert M. Lanza. lf men and women are to understand each other, to enter into each other's nature with mutual sym- pathy and to become capable of genuine com- radeship, the foundation must be laid in youth. It is a dynamic time for the school, a time in which the sweet con- fusion of change reigns. Upon old ground new traditions are Iaidg upon old traditions new ones are forged. I Q ' - ' Qs: The hallmark of a great school is not the amount of information it proffers but rather the skill of learning in the abstract, a skill which involves not only creative thought but also the openmindedness to embrace change, Q Q int-'f ci W it 41: A reciprocative process occurs in which both the school and its com- munity are changed for the better because they are inseparable. I want to be there when everyone sudddenly understands what it has all been for.' Fyodor Dostoevsky In each of us there exists some question that we are unable to identify. We are not allowed to hold the question or its answer in our hand, but we continue to search through pools of emotion for that which might satisfy the yearning to touch the intangible. As we rise even above emotion, we are allowed a glimpse of what lies beyond, but only for a moment. What is there might never be completely revealed, but to dip our hand into the stream of things only for an instant compels us to reach for the stream again. I can wish for a time in which all will understand all, but I can also see that such a time lies beyond this realm of existence. But we are here and this is now. However, in our time of questioning, my only dream is that we reach for our own potentials end, and at that point comprehend both the infinity of understanding that is beyond our grasp and the path of learning which is behind us, but above all, we might tin the endl have reached our one attainable goal of understanding each other. Dylan Thomas lf you want to find out what's behind these cold eyes, you'il just have to claw your way through the disguise. - Pink Floyd My long and desperate search for what is meaningful has procured little but intellectual frustration, emotional hardship, shattered faith, perhaps only the smallest bit of wisdom, and a longing hope. The end of my pursuits has been the realization that true living and happiness are ideals, to be sought after yet never reached. It is the journey, not the destination that is important, the journey can be good or bad, but to have meaning, it must be both. Along the way I have discovered that for me happiness is encapsulated in what is simple, not in wealth, power, or intellect, but in people, fellowship, and the sticky little leaves as they open in the spring. If l could hope for one thing it would be humility and respect of all by all, and the realization that the desire to give of oneself is perhaps the most admirable human quality, and one that is not always easily recognizable, Robert Taft Slaughter 140 Rolling Hills Drive Hixson, Tennessee 37343 Entered 1982 Honor Roll for the Year 7-12fFrench Club 11- 12fCheSs Club 8-12fMath Team 9-12. The final tribute to Jimmy is written in the hearts and memories of thousands of young people who have images of Jim- my as part of their life. l remem- ber Jimmy, early in the morning, behind his desk in the Admis- sions Department, talking about kids, about their victories, their struggles, their mistakes and hopes. His life was filled with his compassion for them. He literally suffered and rejoiced through all of the events of those around him. l wish I had the eloquence to do justice in words to this quality of selflessness that Jimmy lived out and that we all experienced with him. The true eloquence of that, however, was his living out of it. Jimmy is a reminder to me that when l am tired of giving and feel burned out and want to quit or give up on somebody, the an- swer is to keep on giving. Jimmy Duke was a shining ex- ample of what it means to give your life for others to the very end. We live now with the deep sense of loss, but also an aware- ness that we have been truly blessed to have shared our days with him. The prayer of St. Fran- cis is particularly relevant. Oh, Divine Master, grant that l might not so much seek to be consoled, as to console, not so much to be understood, as to understand, not so much to be loved, as to love. For it is in giving that we receive, it is in pardoning that we are pardoned, it is in dying that we are born again to eternal life. - Herbert B. A young person finds here the chance to broaden his or her world though important books, through demanding work in the classroom, and through enlightening conversation with friends and teachers. A young person also finds here, through, the opportunity to serve others. For it is Baylor's belief that enlightenment and service go hand in hand, that when men and women leave Baylor, they will be on their way to making a significant and impassionate contribution to the world. - O. The Spring of Life The heavens above me are numerous shades of grayg no form of Light is shining through. Troubled times have journeyed past my life, and some seem to Linger with me . . . slowly. Sometimes I feel like the flowers should die, and wither away. And that memories should be forgotten. But then, I see a bit of blue peeking through the morbid gray. Though somewhat oblivious and aloof, our outlook dictates an uninhibited lifestyle. Another important aspect of our lifestyle is determined by the extremely small size of our dorm which promotes a feeling of closeness and fraternity. Trustee is often the most, if not only, important aspect of school, and for those who live here, the Baylor experience need not extend past these walls. ff' Nrhpmsllsx j www, if A BSITY FOOTBALL Chris Angel Linh Austin Chris Calton John Clay Byron Commons Happy Craft Chris Curtis Jason Davis Devin Galligan Billy Gilbreath Clarke Glover Billy Godbold Phillip Greene Tracy Hackney Lance Hubbs Phil Jiricko Hank Johnson Jay Jolley Collin Knox Jim Larsen Dan Maddox Ben Marler Flob Moore Sims Moore Chip Nichols Vance Noonan Bill Paap John Paschall Shane Roberson Chris Schuster Jim Shoulders Mark C.
