Houston Ewcuiiw drmmiffee The Houston Executive Committee of the Board of Trustees of Baylor University, composed of twelve residents of this community, is the group responsible for the opera- tion of the College of Medicine. It is the vigor, enthusiasm and imagination of this committee that has made possible the growth of the school since it moved to Houston from Dallas in 1943. The College of Medicine is closely integrated with the University and the Houston Executive Committee members are all members of the Board of Trustees of the Uni- versity. Decisions requiring action by the entire Board are referred to that body. However, in keeping with the tradition of Baylor University to make its institutions responsive to the needs of the community in which they are located, the full responsibility for financing and operating the institution is given to the Executive Committee where it is located. Baylor University College of Medicine has matched the growth of the Texas Medical Center stride for stride. This has imposed a heavy responsibility on the college and its trustees which they have shouldered gladly. The budget of the school has grown from .1S270,000.00i per year in 1943 to S51,100,000.00 in 1955. Of this amount, approximately 25 percent comes from tuition, leaving the remainder to be raised by the Trustees. The Trustees have always supported the concept that Baylor University College of Medicine should seek the finest faculty obtainable, admit the best qualified students who apply and has endeavored to provide both groups with all the facilities and equipment needed to do a first class job. We owe a great deal to the Trustees of this school who have administered it in an unselfish and enlightened manner. as . U- Standing, left to right: Dr. Stanley W. Olson, Deang Mr. J. Dean H u in it , gg in Mi env in .4 , mm, or O God, Thou hast appointed me to watch over the life and death of Thy creaturesg here I am ready for my vocation. This prayer of dedication of Maimonides, the great Jewish Arabian physician of the 12th Century, is a beautiful expression of the ageless and unchanging obligation that each student assumes as he enters into the life of a physician. Medicine is a highly scientific profession with requirements that are severe and exacting. It has developed techniques that are increasingly successful in the alleviation of pain and suffering. Each student of the 1956 graduating class of Baylor University Col- lege of Medicine has my sincere congratulations upon having completed a most difficult task. As I wish each of you success in this distinguished profession, let me simply add this word-that the most exacting aspect of medicine is its moral and ethical requirements and that the greatest success of medicine lies in the ability of its members to practice with sympathy and compassion. . Good luck to each one of you! A53 STANLEY W. OLSON, M.D. Dean
