We came from Bayley Grammar, Morris Plains, Dover, Rockaway, and Mountain Lakes. After being duly tagged Freshman Af, we were taken to the room that was to be the scene of our joys. Here new sub- jects and new teachers greeted us. We were very confident in the beginning, but our conceit was soon taken out of us as we were introduced to Algebra, Latin and Science. ' . Enthusiasm is a virtue not rare in the life of a Freshman. We are happy to say that to this rule we are no exception. We formed the Ave Maria Club. Placing ourselves under Our Lady's banner, we took for our aim, betterment in the various fields of Life's endeavors - spirit- ual, intellectual and social. We were among the leaders in donations to the Propagation of the Faith, and we were ardent supporters in all sports. Proud were we to have Freshies on the football and the basket- ball teams. Many of us succeeded in the mid-year exams, and when the Hnals are over, we hope all will be able to board the good ship Sophomore for the second year of our high school career. Best wishes to the Graduates! 86

HEN the harvest moon was waning, we, young 'QTars,, of of Bayley Eighth Grade, pulled up anchor andqheaded our ship for the shores of Freshman land. A favorable wind urged us on our course and we were going full speed ahead when all of a sudden a reef loomed up in front of us, a white and shining streak in the sea. Then our careful pilot turned his wheel with precision while the helmsman lifted the spy glass to ascertain more clearly the difficulties ahead. Al- gebra Island to the east!', brought all to the port side and we soon dis- covered that this stretch of land was made up of sharp reefs - the four fundamentals, factoring, fractions, and square root. When we had skirtedin safety, this fresh cause of our terror, we gave thanks to God and with bright spirits returned to our work. A few days later the fire of Science broke out on our ship of study. But the hose of earnestness soon set free a volume of water. This helped to ex- tinguish the blaze somewhat but the fire was not thoroughly subdued until Study, the extinguisher, was applied. When well out in the ocean we steered to the South Sea and picked up the shipwrecked poets, Arnold and Coleridge. These artists made us pay indemnity for study- ing the characters of Sohrab, Rustum and the Ancient Mariner because they deemed, in their nerve-shocked condition, that we were re- sponsible for their sad plight. After a few days' ride over a silver sea we steered for a cruise around the Cape of Good Hope into the Sea of Latin. Here we encountered the 88
