BASKETBALL . - HE veteran Bayley High basketball team of 1930-31 completed its season with eleven victories and eight defeats. With all the regulars back, a superb record was antici- . pated but, much to the surprise of many Bayley fans, the team made a poor start by losing to the strong Don Bosco Prep. Let us consider the strong opponents of our boys during the past season. Bayley took such teams as Don Bosco, Hun, Cathedral, Morris- town Prep, St. Benedict, Trenton Immaculate Conception, and Kingsley. A glance at these names, and the reader will agree with us that the opposition was rather stiff. The Immaculate team was stopped in the annual game on Wash- ingtonis Birthday before a wildly enthusiastic crowd of twelve hundred fans. In the State tournament, Bayley came back in Hne form to give Kingsley a terrible fight in the first round. ' Our boys lost by two points, but they certainly gave the State Prep Champions, Kingsley, a bad score. Now for a word about the boys who comprised our team this year. Under their quiet, genial, and efficient coach, Mr. Gerald Bussy', Griifin, they were given the best training. The veteran forward of the team, Whip Manning, topped the boys in scoring with 159 points. His foul shooting was especially sensational. Hickie Keyes, the diminutive for- ward, came next, with Benn Hallinan, the lanky center, third, and Fink', Goldere, valuable utility man who played both forward and guard, in the fourth position. Bill Dempsey and Neil Lawless also played forward. Bob,' Callahan, Joseph Mellone and Fred Miller guarded the enemy's goal. The loyal Subs,' showed their mettle in many a game. The schedule was as follows: Bayley Bayley-Opponents Bayley-Opponents 17-19 Don Bosco . .. . . ,....,.. 25-10 Hanover 11-26 Hun School . . , ..,.,.,. 15-17 Don Bosco 29-11 Sacred Heart ..,. . ..........,. 39-21 Netcong 23-26 Cathedral, A ..,.,.. ., .........,. 22-25 Seton Hall 28-13 Alumni ., . .M ,. ,,,... . . .....,,...... 23-15 Varsity Club 15-14 Netcong .,.. ..,. ,... .,.. , , .. .25-21 Immaculate Conception 24- 8 St. joseph, Paterson .,.. ,. . ..,.,. ....,......... 1 6- 8 Sacred Heart 13- 6 Rockaway. . .,.., ..,.,,....,,..,.,,,...,,, . ,...,,..,.......... 2 2-24 Kingsley 39-27 Boonton.. , .,,.,, ,,..,,.....,....,.........,......,.... 1 9-36 St. Benedict 18--24 Morristown Prep 109

In March, Coach Griffin sent out the call for candidates and a large number of the fellows responded. Seven letter men and a wealth of new material showed themselves at the practices held each afternoon in the Stankee Stadium. As the Annual goes to press before the baseball season is in full swing, we are not able to furnish the returns of the different games, but the schedule arranged by the Managers, John Naughton and Thomas Kava- nagh, is as follows: April 18 The Hun School, Princeton away April 2 Holy Trinity H.
