BACK ROW: Brad Schwab, Delbert Blackstone, Don Coolidge, Cookie Estrada, Larry Eigbrett, Steve Kildow 44 COACHES and MEMORIES The 1978 Bayard Tiger football team proved to be one of the most awesome teams in history in the panhandle of Nebraska. The Tigers closed their regular season at nine wins and no losses, won the conference championship for the second year in a row, dominated the C-6 district teams, and finished as state runners-up to the Pierce Blue-jays. Through a dedicated year of hard work and determination, Bayard ac -complished nearly every goal that high school team can attain. Led by Glenn Critchley, the head football coach at Bayard for the last ten years, a strong offensive line, a balanced and talented passing game, a quick and powerful backfield, and a tough, stingy defense, the 1978 Tigers went farther than any other Bayard team in history. Although Bayard was beaten in the state championship game 28-7, Bayard outscored their opponents 325-121 over a season of 12 games. The 1 'Last of the 70's'' carried out a great tradition and legend of football at Bayard for four years, as the public, fans, and players will remember 1978 Bayard Tiger football as, 1 'The Team.'' The Tigers had only three seniors on the squad, but showed strength for tire future with young promising team members returning for next season. The only state qualifier was Jim Kappen, a junior, who, although beaten in the first round by the 1979 state champ, will lead Bayard's grapplers in the 79-80 season. This being Coach Brandt's first year as head coach for the wrestling team, he showed fine sportsmanship and good methods for his team. SENIOR PROPHECY As I drive down Highway 26, 1 approach Bayard to attend my 10-year class reunion. My heart rate increases so rapidly that 1 feel I should stop at the doctor's office to have my blood-pressure checked. As I enter the office, I am surprised to see LAURIE W1CKARD there. 1 sit down beside her. She explains to me that she is the women's heave-weight boxing champion. 1 ask her if she lias heard anything about our classmates. She catches me up on the ones who have married. BRENDA NAB has finally hooked on to one guy, Brian Hunt, but she still ' 'steps out1' to work at the Oregon Trail Resturant. STEVE BOWERS and BONNY HAPPEN have officially tied the knot and travel around the world with Crusty Jr. in their van which is loaded.........with everthing. DEB AN- DREAS, now married to Dean Ostdick, has taken over Ensser's car lot which features blue Chevy's with card board and cellophane windows. Salesmen include the 12 little Ozie's. DEBBIE WHEELER SMITH is now a stand-in for Charlie's Angels, but the rest of the time she is a happy homemaker. TAMMY SINKS is now married to Wayne McMurtry, but married life does not prevent them from spending time at the ball park, ex-pecially when there are no games ! The receptionists called ' 'next'' and who should 1 find in the examination room, but DANA DORELL, who is now Dr. Dana, M.D. He tells me about his wife PENNY BECKER who is currently suffering from a nervous breakdown. It seems she could not handle it when one of her etiquette students did not say ' 'please.'' Dana's cousin GAIL KORELL, now a social worker, is trying to counsel Penny every Thursday. As I leave the doctor's office, I hear a noise from above, and wonder if 1 am a ' 'goner. It is none other than PAT RODRIQUEZ and Co-pilot JAMES CHACON chasing bam sparrows and writing nasties in the sky. As I look down, a flash of blue darts by me. When she slows down, I recognize it to be PATRICIA BONNES, alias '' Disco Queen.'' She now owns Jeremiah's with RON ESTRADA, still chasing after the girls, as head bouncer, and RODNEY REIN and his girlfriend Lori Allen being her spot light dancers. After talking with Patricia I decide to take a stroll down good Ol' main street. 1 notice a new theatre has opened, and the movie this week is the remake of ' 'Rocky,'' called ' 'The Tough Taco'' starring COOKIE ESTRADA. I continue my stroll and see that SHELLY McADAMS has a denitst office named ' 'Jawa. I go in to visit her and find that she specializes in sensitive teeth and hands out free straws after every visit. Shelly informs me that our old friend, STACY SAUER, is in the Chimney Rock Villa Rest Home, from the anxiety of hitting one too many cats. LILLIAN CHACON steps into the office for her weekly polishing and she tells me that she is a physical therapist. but has few patients because of her cold, clammy hands. We all decide to go to the reunion together and meet DAVE ' 'Kojak' 'LABORICO, who has just returned from the Army having been dishonorably discharged and is presently trying to grow his hair back. Approaching the school, we hear a tremendous roar accompanied by screeching tires. Of course it is CURT BOYER who is now trying to set the world record for spinning cookies, and has reached 25. The reunion starts with Rev. DELBERT BLACKSTONE saying grace. He is still farming the plateau and comes in on Tuesday and Thursday to play softball, and on Sunday to preach. For entertainment JULIE LE-EVER sings some country western tunes, as she has taken over Dolly Parton's place on ' 'top.'' After Julie's singing, Senator LARRY EICBRETT gives his campaign speech using his Steve Martin routine. His private secretary, SHARI STRAUCH, sits close by 94 taking careful notes. Just about the time everyone be- gins to eat, a shrill Cray of ' 'Tip Toe Through the Tulips'' is heard. Everyone turns his head to see SALLY M1CHAL skipping along throwing tulip petals in the air. She is now trying to bring back the carefree days of the Flower Child Revolution, with Mrs. Montanez following close behind. CHRIS R1SCHLING throughout the dinner hands out pahamplets supporting her club called, ' 'Catholics are the Greatest. '' Sitting two seats down from me are CONNIE PIERCE and BELINDA SERCA who are engaged in a heated argument about the taping for their last ' 'Point Counter Point series. As 1 turn away 1 hear a familiar ' 'Hey Toots,'' and 1 recognise PAUL KRANTZ's nasal tone voice. I find out he is still sneaking around B.H.S. slapping girls on the tush and hoping not to get caught by head principal, PAT SINGER. 1 soon learn about the lives of the athletes of our class. BEN BROWN is now volleyball coach at McGrew University, and Coach Wallace is her advisor. CHRIS YOUNG is now attending Bridgeport High School and is still transferring from high school to high schoot trying to find the perfect athletic department. SCOTT WICKARD, who is now playing for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, stands up to promote his new brand of pany-hose. 1 am more than surprised to hear that MICHAEL LUJAN is the new star basketball player for the New York Midgets, and LYNI.EE SMITH has caused a monumental breakthrough in the Professional Volleyball League by becoming the first woman spiker under 5 ft. tall. I look over and there is JIM DOUGLASS working on a cheat sheet. It seems he has yet to pass Mrs. Williams1 senior English class. Looking up, I see a lady in white and recognize JANNA HUCK who is still after J.F.K. Jr. The closest she as gotten to him though, is being his private nurse. I am shocked to hear that GARY ' 'Saint'' McDAN-IEL owns his own bar, serving minors ... milk. KENNY KRANTZ walks about handing out his calling card. He is now a surgeon specializing in kidneys. At the moment he talks with DAVE WAECHTER, to request the use of some reference books. It seems that Dave now owns the Bayard Library, and is reading every book over for the third time time. KEVIN KNISS walks down to the parking lot to wipe off a speck of dust from his 1989 Trans Am. He is still traveling to Scottsbluff and trying to convince people he is Joe Cool. GREG SANCHEZ provides the closing entertainment, performing a one-man-band number while photographing himself during his routine. Next, we take a tour of the high school. The teacher's lounge has been remodeled featuring high chairs for the teachers, with built in ash trays, made by BOB McMURTRY, the new woods teacher. Walking beside me is SHEILA SEIGFRIED, who is now attending the University of Nebraska studying plant life, and is the head of her class. There are several people who would not attend our reunion, one being CAROLYN McDANIEL, who is still hitch-hiking from Papillion. JERRY PIERCE and ROCKY ROBINSON are still passed out at the Sunset Drive Inn since their senior year. DON COOLIDGE is training for the 1992 Olympics by running 10 miels a day, but is lost and has yet to be found. The reunion ends as 1 head out of town. Before I reach the city limits 1 notice RYAN REIBER'S car parked in the cemetery for some ' 'unknown'' reason. I get three miles out of town and I notice the cop's cherries'' appear. He has pulled up next to KURT FEIL and citing him for parking on a country road with his wife Barb. Out in a local com field I see the last of out classmates, ROGER EIRICH. He is trying to farm on his own, but can't figure which end of the tractor to sit on. As 1 approach Moo-Maw's comer, I realize that I won't see these people for another 10 years. Hopefully SENIOR BONNY KAPPEN wills her wardrobe to Lynne Heintz so she isn't forced to wear a different outfit every day. PENNY BECKER wills her calm disposition and ability to take everything in stride to Cara Engdahl and Tomi Schneider, also her devotion to athletics to Miranda Hubbard.
