I This year the Bayard Forensics Club sponsored and participated in many events. They entertained the student body with Halloween and Christmas plays. In addition to this they participated in the Panhandle C, district, and state speech contests. All seven Forensics members who attended the state speech contest were graded excellent. These seven members were Janice Blackstone, Tim Hood, Janae Harris, John Shadegg, Dan Shadegg, Kelly Martin, and Linda Wendt. Mr. Tennant, the Forensics sponsor, was quoted as saying, We did exceedingly well this year because of the great amount of effort put forth by the club members. He went on to say that he had rarely seen such natural talent in a single group of students. He also remarked that he expected even better results next year when present members are more experienced and new members will be coming up from the junior high. The group celebrated its victories with a banquet at the Pizza Hut in Scottsbluff. 38 Forensics V. Pres., Tricia Schmall; Sponsor, George Tennant; President. They became a member of our regional student council association but declined an invitation to join the state organization. 47 Teri Schanols, Secretary-Treasurer; Mark Elliott, President; David Fanning, Vice-President. Although a fairly young team which lacked experience, their serving, setting, and spiking was impressive, though sometimes unpredictable. Coach Mike Winchell Randy George Head Coach Ron Winchell Kent Andreas Robert Gonsalez The highlight of the 1972-73 basketball season came when the Tigers defeated Minatare 37-33, to take third place in the Holiday Tournament. Just shortly after this win, Minatare won the Panhandle C Tournament. Although the Tigers only won one game, there were quite a few games in which a few points at the right time would have made the difference. Lack of players forced many of the underclassmen to play both reserve and varsity ball. The experience they received should be a real asset in building a strong team for next year. I The final Powder-Puff champions. Powder-Puff Basketball Aren't we sexy? The one and only junior in action. The class of 73 finally came through with a win after three years of hard trying. In the finals the Seniors' played the Sophomores and sneaked through with a victory 10-9. In the preceding game the Sophomores whipped the Freshman 41-8. Since the Juniors could not gather enough girls to play powder-puff basketball this year, the Seniors'; with the help of one Junior, advanced to the finals unopposed. The girls, although very inexperienced and inept, had as much fun playing as the crowd had, laughing at them. 65 (BACK ROW) Coach Mike Winchell, Karen Meier, Jaci Schanhols, Linda Fyfe, Donna Paplow, Vickie Pullen, Karin Keller, Rita Hernandez, Becky Lundgren, Jayne Maser, Janet Sjolander, Coach Ron Winchell. Girl’s Track The Bayard girls had another successful season, winning all but one of their track meets, and taking top honors at District for the third consecutive year. Places won at the State meet were Janet Sjolander -3rd in the broadjump and 6th in the 100-yard dash, and Donna Paplow-with a 6th place in the discus. Randy George with his overall gold medal. This year saw many records fall. One of them was a state record in the triple jump by Randy George. The state record was 44 6 , and he had a winning distance of 46,7' . This recond wasn’t allowable because of the wind, but later on in the afternoon he went a distance of 45 2M, which was allowable for a record. The next day he was presented his gold medal, for a over all gold medal performance in the triple jump. He is the first person from Bayard High School to ever get a over all gold medal. His winning jump of 46'7M was the third best jump ever in the state of Nebraska by a high school student. Randy also won the broadjump at state with a leap of 22 6 1 and three quarters, which gave him his third gold medal. Later on he received his fourth medal in the mile relay, which placed sixth. Other members of the relay were Dave Fanning, Ken Fanning, and Kevin Weimmer. Dave Fanning also competed in the 440 in which he got seventh, and Kevin Weimmer competed in the triple jump but was eliminated in the preliminaries. Randy George undefeated in the triple jump. In the North Platte Valley Meet they put two into the finals and also had two third places. The team ended up as the tenth best team in the state, qualifying three for the tournament and having all three place. Greg Wickard, a sophomore, wound up fourth in the 98 pound class, Kelly liakos was third in the 145 pound class, and Dick Rischling was second having made it into the finals. 71 f B-Club TOP Mr. Wimmer, ... ..-------- .
