Seniors! flt’s hard to believe that title actually applies to us—hard to realize that we are now the admired and not the admirers. All through grade school and Junior High, we were looking forward to the day we could enter High School and finally become Seniors. In September, 1941, the Freshmen class was the second largest ever to enroll in Bayard High. We were as •green” as they come, but it didn’t take us long to get into the swing of things. Three of our boys came through with flying colors in athletics. They were Art Kechter, Dean Merry, and Bud Harris. Ruth Green was responsible for our name going down in the history of music. To guide us successfully through that first year, we elected Kayo Smith as president; Emma Kildow, vice-president; Bernice Hay, secretary; and Warren Anderson, treasurer. Miss Watt was our capable sponsor and Mrs. Smith made her first appearance as our ever-loving Mom.” As Sophomores, we continued our steady aim toward success. This year the girls made a name for themselves in the world of sports by winning the inter-class basketball tournament. Although our class had somewhat decreased, we still had an able lot from which to pick our leaders. Ralph Levick was chosen president; Dean Merry, vice-president; Melvin Harris, treasurer; and Edna Hill, secretary. Miss Watt was again given the position as sponsor and Mrs. Smith once more reigned as “Mom.” With 60 students remaining, we as Juniors came back for another year in Bayard High. Three of our boys, Art Kechter, Ralph Levick, and James Hughes, had to leave our class and enroll in our Uncle Sam’s Navy. Bud Harris was elected president; Clarence Yekel, vice-president; Myrtle Johnson, secretary; and Jimmy Pringle, treasurer. This year we were privileged to have as our sponsor, Mrs. Raymond, and our ever faithful “Mom” Smith. Again the girls won the inter-class basketball tournament. In the fall of 1944, we came back for the most wonderful and promising year of all. We came back with the attitude to win, and that we have done. A few more of our classmates have gone and more shall leave for the armed forces of our country. For president, Milan Lincoln was elected; Jeanne Williams was elected for vice-president; Violet Lane, secretary; and Kayo Smith, treasurer. We were again pleased to have Mrs. Raymond as sponsor, and “Mom” Smith, who stood by us all through our career in Bayard High, as Class Mother. We realize, as we pass through the portals of Bayard High, never to return, we are going into a world filled with chaos and hate. We realize that on our shoulders will rest the responsibility of a peaceful and better postwar world. We like to look back on our school days in dear old Bayard High, look back on the wonderful things school had to offer us; but as we force ourselves to look into the future, we must look for ways and means to make this world a beautiful and safe place for ourselves and our posterity. —Virginia Johnston.
