The response you make to your educational opportunity will determine the kind of life you live and the environment you will inhabit. U- if Sava, lflglaa, Sponsor: Beaches, Guthrie Center, Iowa PRlNCIPAL'S MESSAGE Education should make a difference. It should make a difference in the way you live and in the way you think. The way you live is more important than the way you make your living. The type of person you are will mean much more to those who know you than the particular job you hold. Let us hope that you will be known and respected for your interest in your neighbor as well as for your interest in yourself. 0 Sponsor: West End Produce, Guthrie Center, Iowa HIGH CHOOL FACULTY Richard Textor Donald Meyer Boy's Basketball Coach Industrial Arts Assistant Football Coach Modern Problems Track Coach Science Patrick Kelly Robert Deal Vocal Music Social Studies General Agriculture Fred Taylor Band Instrumental Music I Sponsor: Donation, Guthrie Center, Iowa Dr. John R. I, I, I, 1. witnessed by: C t2A-ace., Sponsor: Farmers Co-op Elevator, Bayard, Iowa CLASS HISTORY On September 2, 1946, it became the privilege of twenty-two little tykes to bring their bicycles to Bayard and start through the thirteen years of schooling so necessary in our grand and glorious state of Iowa. They were Dick Bauer, Raymond Briscoe, Jim Crawley, Boyd Crees, Ronald Derry, Paul Guritz, Mike Kidder, Darwin Lilly, Roger Stone, Dick Young, Ronnie Terlisner, Maurice Watkins, Mary Betts, Carolyn Hirschberg, Dana Kraft, Zelda Marchant, Patricia Minnihan, Judy Nielsen, Sally Peckumn, Roberta Rogan, Elaine Schick, and Kathryn Wailes. Joining our little group during that year were Richard Stratton, Kay Rosenberger, and Barbara Rutenbeck. But Richard Stratton soon left again to finish the year in another school. Our Chief Bicycle Engineer was Miss Ann Smith. Our art and printing weren't exactly perfect, but appeared quite modern. The next fall we returned to find we were to ride under the instruc- tion of Miss Weitkamp in the fields and on the crossroads of first grade. We played hospital that year. The pills were red hots and surgical instru- ments were sticks. The main ailment was rocks in the tu my and could be remedied only by operating. That year we gained Larry Hupp, Marcella Heater, Bonnie Jo Mozena, and J. Kay Kelsey. Then we lost Bonnie Jo Mozena, Barbara Rutenbeck, Jim Crawley, and Ronnie Terlisner. In second grade we went to Miss Laughlin when our bicycles needed repaired or when we fell off and needed help to catch up to the group. Edwin Stillians joined our merry group while Paul Guritz, Larry Hupp, and Mike Kidder left us to join other groups in other schools. We were graded with A's, B's, and C's instead of S's, U's, and check marks. we were proud of these marks because these made us like the big kids. Near the end of the school year, we took a side trip to the town park for a class picnic. We had a great time, but were tired little cyclists at the end of the day. Approaching the third grade mile, we saw Miss Lund waiting to help us over the bumpy road that was ahead of us. Here, a few of the girls tried to ride their bicycles on the top of the desks, but this only caused them to lose their recesses. Along our journey, George Shank, Doris Devolld, Raymond Brisco, Kathy Watkins, Sonja Kerr, and Richard Stratton brought their bicycles and joined our group for that bit of our trip through the school of education. But we lost J. Kay Kelsey, Darwin Lilly, Zelda Marchant, Sally Peckumn, and Dick Young. Miss Gripp was our fourth grade teacher. We looked forward to that year because it was the first time we were allowed to go to Springbrook State Park for our class picnic instead of having it in the town park. This year we lost Doris Devolld, Edwin Stillians, Patricia Minnihan, Richard Stratton, and Sonja Kerr. Sponsor: Bayard Building Supply Co., Bayard, Iowa We found as our guide and helper in fifth grade, Mrs. Schreck. While she headed our crew, we gained Paul Miller, Ronald Patrick, Robert Weddle, and Sarah Frederickson, and lost Raymond Briscoe. Miss Clark was our captain in sixth grade. we went to her when we had problems and found she was a great help. She also knew how to handle sixth graders when they get mischeivous and took a snake into the classroom and put it in the wastebasket. That year we were curious about what was inside a little pig. Maurice Watkins brought a little dead pig to school one day and we took that day to cut the pig apart to study the organs of an animal. Sarah Frederickson, Ronald Patrick, and Kathy Watkins stumbled on their bicycles and were picked up by other schools leaving us to cope with the teachers without them. For the next mile of our journey, we experienced having our first man teacher, M . Burchett. He led us along the path of one mile in our days in the beautiful halls of ivy. While under his direction, we were joined by Henry Phillips, Raymond Briscoe, Jim Crawley, and Sally Peckumn. we were all proud of our new bigger bikes, for we were now in Junior High, and that required bigger bicycles. We again lost Raymond Briscoe at the end of the first semester. Miss Watkins escourted us along our eighth mile of education, the last one we would spend in elementary school, for the next year we were to join the ranks of the happy high-schoolers. Along the traveling of that mile, we gained Tom Caraher, Gary Dupuy, and Freda Cornelius. No one left our fine group and we all ended the school year with a promotion on Class Day. We entered high school to find it quite different from grade school. There in grade school, we had the same teacher for every subject. But now in high school, we had a different teacher for each class. We did have one teacher we could go to for help. That was our sponsor, Mr. Toohey. Lyall Stuhr came to our bicycle and left us to go to Being the partying type including a skating party at class from Carroll, but Jim Crawley took his another school near Perry. of youngsters, we had many parties that year, Jefferson, where M . Parker slept in the rink while we all skated ourselves to exhaustion. But that party wasn'enough, so we had a hay-ride. Just to show us we weren't so lucky, the rack broke and we had to walk about a mile before we got the rack back together and over the dangerous road, so we could ride it again. Our sponsor was M . Kuhns, who was also our Biology teacher. We cut a cat apart to see what makes them tick. But when we got inside, it wasn't ticking anymore so we still don't know. Jim Myers joined our bike riding, and then soon dropped out of school. Warren Calder also dropped our of school. With Driver Education our Junior year, we decided to trade our bikes in on cars, and now you will in high gear. see us rodding through the rest of the school Sponsor: Carroll Implement Co. Bagley, Iowa . Allis-Chalmers, Dodge Trucks, and New Idea Machinery We had the Junior Class Play, and had a few mishaps after practice. After these, we were ready to trade the cars back for our bicycles. But then we needed our cars for the Junior-Senior Banquet which we sponsored in April. We had two sponsors that year, which were Mrs. Nance and Mrs. Anderson They helped very much with our stand and Class Play and the Banquet. We gained Jack Colbert, Ann Hoit, Joyce Jacobsen, Roy Doran, Darrell Ocheltree, and Janice Titus, but of these, we also lost Joyce Jacobsen, Ann Hoit, and Janice Titus, along with Tbm Caraher and Lyall Stuhr. S i ear we had two on ors a ain who ere Mr Te t r and Mrs. RggneS3.Or y Sp S g w X O We lost no one and gained Tom Caraher back into our merry ranks. This is the year that we started changing some of the old traditions that were so faithfully observed around these beloved halls of ivy. First we held a welcoming party for the Freshmen instead of the usual night of torture. Next, we held the Homecoming dance in the study hall instead of the gymnasium. We skipped a night between our Class Play performances, and d a two day skip trip for the Seniors. we also encouraged the other classes to have all-high-school parties, so that we had four such parties that year, the last of which was a farewell to the Seniors by the Freshmen. There were twelve of the eager little kiddies that brought their bicycles on that first day of school and rode them together through all thirteen years at Bayard. They are: Dick Bauer, Boyd Crees, Ronald Derry, Roger Sone, Maurice Watkins, Mary Betts, Carolyn Hirschberg, Roberta Rogan, Dana Kraft, Judy Nielsen, Elaine Schick, and Kathy Wailes.
