Inst A Eng ilfrlvnh lt was on a day ln late Aprrl that the llttle tragedy was enacted one of those balmy joyous days that seem patterned for youth and youth s pleasures there IS little room for mrddle age wrth nts work and cares on days luke this they rnvrte only laughter and song long buoyant walks and gay conversa tlon To remaln Indoors any longer than IS necessary would be sacrrlege So thought Sally Reed pretty vlvaclous and ln love and Myrna Delroy a newcomer at the Houston School for Young Ladles as they saunterecl forth for a stroll on the Campus ln that precious two hours between thelr last class and dnnner They were talkmg eagerly these two of an event which had long been talked of both ln Houston and nts brother college Lenox srtuated four mules away The Houston Lenox annual masquerade to be glven on the follow mg nlght at Lenox was the mam toprc of conversatron on both campuses Wlth whom one was golng what one was wearmg the surprlses that were nn store for the guests all thls was food for thought and much discussion My costume remarked Sally rs simply darling lt s Spanish black lace mantllla a perfectly glgantrc fan and all the other fixmgs even to the rose to hold between my teeth l can t put rt on wrthout wanting to do the tango and snap castanets You ll be stunnlng her friend responded black lace and blonde halr ns a peach of a combmatlon even lf the proverblal Spanrsh senorlta rs dark lm afrard l Il be dreadfully trrte as little Plerrette but l havent had time to thlnk up anything more orlgmal Don t you worry Myrna you ll be about the most attractive gurl there Sally sald this sincerely for she was lncllned to over estrmate the charms of others and was particularly lmpressed with the rather flashy good looks of her newly found frxencl Myrna She wondered a little anxlously what Bob who was takmg her to the dance would thunk of M rna rf he would be as lmpressed as were several of the other Lenox boys she had already met for though Myrna had been at school but' a short time she had received more than a few buds for partners at the dance and her popularrty was growing every day Sally knew that Bob llked her liked her a lot too for hadnt they gone everywhere together for over a month and hadn t he told her she was the most charming grrl he d ever met3 Yet Sally also knew that he had a changeable dlsposxtron and at any moment might fall for someone else He had been known to do this before More than one Houston gurl had shed tears over the abrupt Fmlsh of an affair wrth Bob and Sally feelmg that she cared very deeply hardly wrshed to do llkCWlSC My brother Buddys coming down for the dance tomorrow night announced Myrna l want you to meet hlm l d llke to answered Sally who was mterested ln no man but Bob Sally hey there Sal' A boys volce floated across the Campus Sally recognized rt Immediately as Bob s and turned to wave eagerly and call Hello there Bob' Myrna turning more slowly beheld a dark halred bog seated some drstance away IH a rather shabby roadster somewhat the worse for havlng belonged to three college boys none of them careful drivers He had stepped over the slde of the llttle car and was runnrng toward them As he drew nearer Myrna decclded that he was exceedlngly good looklng and worth trying for At the same rnstant she favored hrm wlth a most charm mg and much practiced smlle He responded wlth a rather grln that was characterxstrcally boyish 0 19 - t . . . , , .' . 151151 A Eng iltrwnil rnntuuwh It s a gorgeous day for a spin girls was Bob s first remark after ln troductlons had been made What say you two3 Well lt s perfectly O K with me that IS lf Sally s wllllng ThlS from Myrna Sally was and the three were soon speedlng along ID the llttle roadster Myrna ccupymg the seat next to Bob somewhat to the chagrin of Sally who consldered lt rather forward Myrna and Bob had a glorlous ride lt was such fun gettlng acquamted' And Myrna s lme had never registered so perfectly Sally however had what she descrlbed as a miserable time For one thlng she thought Bob was openly neglectxng her The truth was Sally was a llttle jealous of Myrna s good looks and extremely sensxtlve where Bob was concerned Consequently she was moody and silent and a sharp contrast to Myrna who was feelmg extraordmarlly peppy and had sparkllng conversatnonal powers When the roadster fxnally drove up ln front of Sally s sorority house she thoroughly hated Myrna and was angry at Bob for what she consldered his susceptn bllrty to obvlous vamplng All through the next day Sally went to her classes ln the bluest of moods Even the greatly longed for event of that mght had dlmmed for her for knowlng that Bob s attltude toward her had changed she felt she could never be happy Even when she stood before the mlrror arrayed ln her Spanish costume the black lace mantllla settlng off to advantage her blonde halr creamy whlte skm and deep blue eyes she was downcast and unhappy Her dellcate prettlness meant nothxng to her she consldered herself plain and unattractive two thlngs they were very far from being Sally had sud denly been possessed with a terrible mferlornty complex When Bob called for her at elght thlrty dressed as a charming young Why Sal whats the troublc-X3 Bob demanded notlclng her pout Cheer up pal smile and show those pretty teeth You re goln out step pmg Hrs next words went over blg Know who s takmg Myrna3 And by the way what s she gomg as3 He falled to notlce the cold sarcasm of Sally s answer l really dont know But she d look stunning ln anythmg don t you th1nk3 Yes shes attractxve alright sand Bob earnestly maklng Sally hate hxm desperately and clench her fists They found the dance ln full swlng when they arrived The great check ered floor was resplendant wlth the color and varlatlon of the costumes the decorations were fantastlcally beautlful the muslc perfect yet Sally felt that for her the evenmg would be a fallure She danced about five mlnutes with Bob who undoubtedly was the best dancer at Lenox when a stout boy whom she desplsed cut 1n and lm medlately left the lmprlnt of his foot on her tmy satln pumps And a few minutes later she notlced Bob wlth a certaln young Plerrette nn hls arms with whom he continued to dance the rest of the evenlng Sally certalnly dldn t lack for danclng partners She had plenty of those But the lump ln her throat grew larger and larger and at about eleven o clock whlle dancxng with a graceful young clown who was domg hrs best to keep the conversation gomg pleasantly a bug tear escaped and slld gulltlly down her cheek Why llttle Carmen' exclaimed the clown you re not crying are you5 Why what s the matter has your toreador left you3 Why yes' It s just that answered Sally smllmg rn splte of herself 1 I N' ' . an . k 5 , 7 - . . . 1 ' ' ! - 1 I V . . .
