Liang Svhnrr llgluhlzr Svrhnnlw Night fsflllililli 1Fnr illnrrmn Burn Ahultn The first nlght school class provldlng lnstructlon ln English for foreign born residents of Bay Shore was organlzecl ln 1921 Since that time the local Board of EdUCatlOD wlth the assistance of the New York State Department of Education has provldecl a teacher each year to Instruct the class usually three tlmes a week 1n the elements of writing speaklng and reading Engllsh and rn a workmg knowledge of Amerlcan customs and government The hlstory of the flrst flve years of this valuable work ln Bay Shore IS very llmlted From l92I l922 the class was taught by Mr Harold A Caroll then physlcal tramlng clrrector for the boys m the day school Durlng the three following seasons l92Z l975 lt was ln the hands of Mr Lee A Spencer who also dlrected the shop work IH the day school ln l925 I926 Mr Bert Teachout Instructor of science ln the hugh school organlzed a rather large class for that season ln the fall of 1926 the work was turned over to Mr Carl Wm Meyer also of the local hugh school faculty and the department has smce been under hls lnstructlon During the season of 1926 l927 out of a registered student body of slxty one persons the following St3tlStlCS are worth notlng 28 students were Germans 9 Swedish 7S1c1l1an 4 Russlan 3 ltallan 3 Porto RICHH Amer lcan cltlzens 2 Norwegian 2 Flnnlsh 2 Greek and l French The year l927 I928 wlth ltS reglstratlon of slxty five brought represen tatlves from FIVE other natlons Denmark Poland Switzerland Ireland and Rumanla One registrant was born ln the Umted States and had been taken abroad at an early age She had mastered four different languages and rapidly regained her ablllty to speak Engll h after a short residence here varied character was glven by puplls of the class and frlencls Mr Floyd Hurlbut Superlntendent of Schools presented certlficates of Approval and Advancement to those puplls who had attended classes regularly and showed abullty ln learning the English language The proud recelvers of these certlflcates were APPROVAL Walter Danlsch George Helm Rose Kleln Hugo Lar son Paul Miller Amelia Rodrlouez Lola Rodrlquez Lollta Rodrrquez Klrt Pahrrsch Alfred Schmitz Rose Slaplkoff and ohn Tecklenburg ADVANCEMFNT Marla Cloth Frank Qozenza Herman Deeken ohn Grosshans Amanda Henke Max Hoffman Walter Hoffman Elizabeth ohnson Sven ohnson Ellzabeth Bahnsch anne Pr mes Arthur Schmltz hrxeda Schmltz ohn Sortxno l-rederlck Spadaro and Otto Tlller After the program and presentatron of certlfrcates a clellcxous luncheon was served IH the home maklng room and the party ended wlth d'xncc and song ln the gymnaslum ln December l927 the lsllp Nnght School students mvlted the Bay Shore group to a large party and dance and entertained royally lr IS hoped that Bay Shore can return the compliment by staglng an out door get together for the two groups The closlng of the I927 l928 class work was marked by the presenta tnon of certrflcates to the following members of the cla s APPROVAL Helene Breckle john Engers ohn Grosshans George Helm Amanda Henke Walter Hoffman Adolph Moessmer Paul Schindler and ohn Tecklenburg ADVANCEMENT Karl Blessmg Anna Helm Martha Huber Bertha Kolb Anna Kramer Anna Markgraf Therese Moessmer Adolf Thoma Henry Nolke oseph Nolke Emll Qesterllu Herman Phenmgs Gertrude Ruhnau l'red Schmltt ohn Sortmo H s U X x 5.
