W Y 'P , 7 mzor Glass O ww Svvntnrn IHEH SCDIOI' OfHCCI'S Vlce President Milford Klrkup Secretary Mary Wlnegar Treasurer Samuel Wlddnfleld 5' ' Mm-P Q President Lloyd Moreland Svrnrnr Artuntrw The Class of 28 held two cake sales at Terry and Glbson s real estate office The cakes contrlbuted by the Seniors w re sold by the gurls of the class needless to sav both sales were uccessful The Seniors received the proceeds from the Alumni basketball games of December 30th They hlred an orchestra and had dancm after the game clearing slxty five dollars lhe Seniors held an evenm card party on anuary 26th ln the school library at whxch about elght tables were filled Refreshments conslstlng f coffee and cake were served by the gurls Lovely table pr17es were gxven lhls card party only reallzed about twenty f1VC dollars but even thls small amount looked good to the then needy Class During the early part of March this celebrated Class held the usual Senior Popularity Contest and broke all records for money cleared on such an event lt lasted for one week durlng whlch tlme excltement and even strife was rampant and at the end of which week fifty dollars had been lranchl Most Popular Teacher Hazel Klrkup Most Popular Curl ohn l'lynn Most Popular Boy Very suitable and useful prlzes gold pxeces worth two dollars and a half were awarded the wmners ln chapel the fol lowing week On the evemng of February l3th the Seniors held a Valentine s Ddncc ln the high school audltorlum Flhe music contributed by Klt Hallock s Or chestra was very good and those who came thoroughly enjoyed the evening lhe Llass cleared about hfteen dollars on thls event And then oh peace' Oh Joy' During the last week ln March the benevolent Board of leducatlon actmg the well known part of Santa Claus smxled sympathetlcally on the hard working Seniors of I928 and presented them wlth a check for hve hundred dollars whlch swelled the Washlngton lqrlp fund and made llfe worth llvlng and the Trlp more than an unattalned and pleasant fantasy Stanley Kenward Z8 l l . . . . '41 30 N ON VZ 2 'Ea :- .9 ct rw -fb 9 -C Z9 Bah Bab a modern four act comedy by Edward Childs Carpenter was successfully presented on Tuesday and Wednesday December 6th and 7th I927 by the class of 28 The members of the cast were well chosen by the Misses Emily Gage and ulie Franchl and Mr Carl W Meyer Great credit is due Miss Gage for her excellent coachmg Miss Franchl for her plendid co operatlon and Mr Meyer for his willingness to help especially in the construction of the scenery The plot of the play was centered around the desperate and very amus mg efforts of a young sub deb daughter Bab played by Evelyn Greenberg to have her family and friends take her seriously William Wesselhoft as the father ames Archibald had the difficult role of a middle aged gentleman and handled It to perfection His clever make up together with his dlgnlfled manner was quite suited to the part Doris Curley as Clara Archibald the mother gave a splendid character ization She registered cleverly anger and disgust at the antics of Bab the combined efforts of herself and her husband to make the younger daughter behave was one of the real hits of the show Marjorie Magnuson had a prominent part as the debutante daughter Leila She was frequently provoked at her little sister but in the end forgave her since Bab arranged for her successful elopement with the mysterious Clinton Beresford Earl Bull played the part of Beresford titled Englishman who was very popular with Mrs Archibald but whose mysterious doings failed to impress the father Earls clever acting and English accent were very effective and brought much laughter and applause from the audience Lloyd Moreland as Carter Brooks a very dear friend of the family and Samuel Wlddiheld in the role of Guy Grosvenor a young actor and Carter s friend gave a very fine impression of a stage shlek ane Raleigh played by Natalie Maizel and Eddie Perkins played by Robert Stocks were friends of th Archibald family and provided much of the amusement Eddie who tries to be grown up smokes a cigar which gets the best of him and forces him to exit hastily He played the adolescent youth to perfection ane a young mnocent who tries to be sophisticated was portrayed effectively by Miss Maxzel Catherine Dixon as Hannah the mald and Kenneth Petty as William the butler also played their parts well Credit is also due Milford Klrkup business manager May Tecklenburg cl Qigmund Hirsch property managers and to the many others who helped to make the play such a great success that lt will long be remembered The proceeds of the play helped swefl the coffers for the annual Wash wngton trip Evelyn Greenberg 2 8 NOTE Evelyn Greenberg was of course too modest to mention her own fine acting in Bab ln due consideration of this fact we feel it our duty to state here that she played her part which was the largest fl most difficult in the play exceedingly well and contrlbuted in a great measur to the success of the performance Editor If if .. ,,. This :1':lx' -Q-:Ile up tln- :llululls HI' um- 1l:sm.wI .lolm .Xlqw ll.-lla llt- -41-1 lu Xlllultllil l':umr!s .Xml xwfllwvl lnlllxss-ll I.. rlmuxlr, . mawhrngtnn Emp IEEE We left Bay Shore on Monday Aprll 9th on the first lap of our slx day trip to Washlngton an event whlch we had long been awaltlng It seemed as lf we were on other laps too during the rlde from Bay Shore to Pennsylvanla Statlon As the Long Island Speclal whlch was to transport us and about 400 other Long Island SCDIOTS to the natlon s capital was not yet ready we had a very noxsy walt of about an hour During that time I am qulte sure we amused the other travelers ln the statlon at least we trlecl hard enough We finally found our cars on the Speclal some of us regretting that we were not nearer the dlnlng car even lf xt was only I0 30 We regretted It even more when we tried to lunch at l l after the first call to dxnner Some of the more fortunate students flmshed thelr meal about 2 30 we however were not of thls class We arrived at UDIOH Station Washlngton D C all exclted and anxious to see our hotel and sleeping quarters After waltlng outside the statlon for about half an hour we were taxl led to the beautlful Hotel Cordon there to look at our quarters they were llttle more than that scornfully However we managed to rest qulte a blt before we went down to a dmner of whlch we partoolc llttle we certainly didn t eat lt' That evenmg we vlslted the Congresslonal Library for a whlle and then otherwlse amused ourselves untll tlme to turn m The next mornlng we plled into slght seemg buses and toured the clty We vlslted the Llncoln Memorlal whlch lmpressed us very much and wound up at the House of Representatlves office bulldmg there to meet our Congress man Robert L Bacon The remamcler of the mornlng was spent touring the Capitol where guldes showed us the rotunda the Senate and House chambers the Hall of Statuary and the Supreme Court chamber Most of us even showed our patrlotlsm to the extent of cllmblng to the dome where we obtained a beautiful vlew of the clty Tuesday afternoon was at the dns public bulldlngs whlle a few a very few braved the cold to witness the opemng of the Amerlcan League baseball season the game bemg between Boston and Washlngton We even saw Presldent Coolldge throw out the first ball Wednesday mornmg conducted by Mr Gatje we vlslted the Bureau of Engravlng and Prmtmg and the Washlngton Monument We shall never for get the former now famous for lts elevators Need I say more3 Only two of the Bay Shore SCDIOYS were brave enough to climb the Washington Monu ment although many walked down bragging about lt for the rest of the week That afternoon the entire Long Island party went to Mount Vernon vlsltmg on the way Arlmgton National Cemetery and Alexandria Unfor tunately lt ralned most of the afternoon thus spolllng our boat rlde back and preventing us from havmg our plcture taken on the lawn at Mount Vernon We trled to dry slttmg on the porch at Mount Vernon but It seemed or better we found out that even the chalrs were rellcs of Washlngton s time We VlSltCd the Whlte Hou e on Thursday but failed to catch a glimpse of either Presldent or Mrs Coolldge We spent the remalnder of the mornlng at our own pleasure untll I2 0 clock when the Bay Shore Party met outslcle the Capitol to have thelr plcture taken Thursday afternoon and Friday morn mg were spent vlsltlng various publlc bulldlngs or taklng trolley rides Among the many places of Interest vnslted were Smithsonian lnstltute Medlcal Museum U S Treasury Buxldmg State War and Navy Buildings Qorcoran Art Galleries Pan American Bulldlng Georgetown Umverslty Cathollc Unlverslty Amerlcan Red Cross Bulldlng Francxscan Monastery and sesslons of Supreme Court House and Senate fContlnued on page 40 il Q Q 9 Y I - , . , Y m ' . . , , : . . y .
