This cannot be achieved by one person alone. lt takes others working together and sharing ideas to bring it all together, Thanks to a very dedicated staff, especially the ones who stuck by me 'til the end. Thanks!! .TID Mrs. Mollie Jean Empsall Carr Mr. Thomas G. Carr FORTIETI-I ANNIVERSARY EDITION DEDI CATI ON The 1987 Portico marks the fortieth edition of Bay Path's yearbook. The first issue was published in 1947 and was dedicated to Thomas Cl. Carr, the President. As students, we have known the name Carr for two years. We have attended classes in Carr Hall and on our first visit to the campus, we saw the portraits of Thomas G. and Mollie Jean Carr in Mills Theatre. We learned that both Mr. and Mrs. Carr are still actively involved with the College, even though Mr. Carr has been in a wheelchair since an automobile accident in 1952. Mr. Carr served as the founding President of Bay Path Junior College from 1944 until his retirement in 1968 when he was named President Emeritus, and has had uninterrupted seridce as a trustee until the present time. Mrs. Carr served as a trustee from 1949 to 1986 and maintains an active role as Trustee Emeritus. During her husband's presidency, she ofnciated as Presi- dent's Lady at social functions. Mr. and Mrs. Carr, and Mrs. Carr's family, have also been major benefactors to the College. Mrs. Carr's father. the late George H. Empsall, gave Bay Path its Hrst dormitory, Empsall Hall, which presently houses the Admissions and Financial Aid offices, and her aunt, Mrs. Ada C. Mills, provided the funds for Mills Theatre. The Empsall-Carr Scholarship Fund is Bay Path's largest endowed scholarship and constitutes the largest single gift ever given to the College. The class of1987 deems it appropriate to honor the many contributions the Carrs have made to Bay Path Ju- nior College by dedicating the 40th edition ofthe Portico to Mr. Thomas Ci. Carr and Mrs. Mollie Jean tjmpsall Carr, with respect and gratitude. You will Hnd greater opportunities for women than ever before because the barriers that kept women from many careers in the past have been removed, and the most detrimental myths about women s capabilities have been eradicated. You will also find more options available to you in formulating your personal and social lives and will be better prepared to cope with life, having had the benehts of higher education. Research studies indicate that the primary objective of the majority of college students is to secure a job with high compensation following graduation. This is a marked change from the social semice objective of college students a decade ago. Unfortunately, job satisfaction and the quality of life cannot be measured in economic terms. You will be assuming new responsibilities and more freedom to control your own destiny. I hope the important choices you will be called upon to make will be made with wisdom and dignity. More important than the degree you earned is the kind of woman you are and the kind of human being you are striving to become. As women, you have responsibility for the affairs of the heart as well as the mind. To establish happy homes, to bear and rear children lif that is your choicel, to unselhshly minister to the needs of those less fortunate - these are the traditional roles of women. Being a woman is your birthright, a chance element of nature. To be a loving woman is your obligation if you are to fully actualize your life. Be proud to be a woman. Set your standards high in your personal and professional lives, and be worthy of the privileges that genera- tions of women before you fought long and hard to obtain. You will be leaving a part of yourselves to Bay Paths heritage, and I hope you will be taking with you the best it offered. Throughout your lives, your college will maintain continued interest in you. We will welcome your letters and hope you will visit the campus frequently.
