It involves many things, but above all, the power ofgoing out of one's self, and appreciating whatever is noble and loving in another. - Thomas Hughes When we first came to Bay Path, we did not know too many people. We were excited and open to meeting and making new friends. Little did we know that in such a short time, some of these new ac- quaintances would become so near and dear to our hearts. ln the beginning, the two years we were to spend here stretched ahead like a long endless road, but now, in retrospect, they seem to have been all too short and have gone by all too quickly. The friendships we have formed and nurtured will be tested by time and distance, but we are confi- dent that they will last. We have learned a great deal from living, sharing, and studying with each other, there have been times of laughs, smiles, and tears. Since most things are softened with time, we will probably carry in our hearts the memory ofthe hap- py experiences. Special Friends include not only roommates and classmates, but also our teachers and mentors. We shall never forget our two years at Bay Path and the special times we have shared. lt is therefore appropriate that we, the class of 1986 dedicate our Portico to Special Friends. 'il shall light a candle in your heart that shall not be put out. Presidents Message Following Commencement each of you will be traversing different paths and pursuing your specific objectives. The rewards of your Bay Path education will be the contributions it makes to moving you closer to the achievement of your personal and professional goals. Some of you will retain your student status at colleges and universities in pursuit ofa baccalaureate degree. Your preparation at Bay Path will serve as an excellent foundation on which to build additional skills. Although you will encounter normal problems of adjustment to a new and perhaps larger colle- giate environment, you will nevertheless be an experienced student with devel- oped self-discipline who has adjusted to college life. Many of you, in fact most of you, will retire as full-time students and continue your education on a part-time basis. Yours will be the world of work and finan- cial independence. This is the world that as students, you describe as the real world. This is what you've been working toward and waiting for, and yet as the time approaches, you are understandably insecure. You will be called upon to compete in the marketplace for employment - to obtain ajob, to produce, to perform, and in essence, to succeed. You will have to stand the tme test ofthe quality of your intellectual, technical and social skills acquired over years of preparation. Whether your chosen path is that of student or employee, your world is one in which values and stereotypes have changed so quickly that traditional choices and solutions no longer apply universally. lt is in the business ofliving that your choices and decisions will have the greatest impact on your lives. The kind of woman you are and the kind of human being you are striving to become are even more important than the degree you earned. The quality of your life is infinitely the most important element of your future. All of us at Bay Path sincerely hope that through your exposure to the wisdom of the ages, knowl- edge of the human condition, appreciation of the arts and literature, and your study ofthe other liberal arts components of your Bay Path education, you will enjoy not only productive and fulfilling careers but live effective and meaningful lives. I am honored that I had the chance to put the 1986 Portico together. It wasn't easy, but with the help of my staff and supportive friends, I was able to do it. I would like to thank my friends and staff for standing behind me during those difficult times.
