Carr, whose 24 years of devoted efforts and fore- sight have changed a business school into a fully accredited two-year college for women. His personal contributions can be noticed at a glanceg outstanding is our laboratory and classroom building, which is dedicated in his name. 'sb' -3 ..-3 X . 'pf' A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT The PORTICO reaches you at the conclusion of your Bay Path year. The editors have created an excellent pictorial and written representation of that year-the sorrows and joys, the failures and successes, the chal- lenges and achievements-all a part of your commit- ment to college. In the years ahead I hope this POR- TICO can recapture for you the significance of this experience. In deciding upon a college education you have ac- cepted a two-edged sword. While college may help open the door to further opportunity, personal growth and individual happiness, it should also challenge each of you to accept responsibility for recognizing and act- ing upon the needs of our society. As the result of your very presence here you shall henceforth be ex- pected to share a greater responsibility for the solution of all sorts of problems. Our national commitment to higher education is predicated upon this response. We live in a world where technology has made yes- terday's dreams into today's realities that will be to- morrow's commonplace. At the same time it is a world ir. which man's inhumanity to man is all too apparent. Thus the need for love, compassion and understanding has never been greater. If you leave college lacking the capacity for these vital qualities, your ability to per- form and your realization of happiness will fall short of the mark. Bay Path's success is ultimately measured in terms of the impact which you, its alumnae, make upon the world. Your tangible accomplishments here will quickly fade in our eyes and yours, but what must not fade is your willingness to make a differencew. If throughout your lives you can sustain a love for beauty, a compassion for the needs of your fellow men, an understanding tolerance for the other person's point of view and an active social conscience dedicated to righting injustice-then your family, teachers and friends can share your joy in a happy life. You have changed during your time at Bay Path, individually and collectively. Bay Path, too, as an in- stitution will be different next September and forever more as a result of your presence and impact. Your involvement in this College is so temporary and transi- tional-yet vital to you, the College and the broader society we all serve. You have made a difference here, I hope we have too. Our best wishes go with you for success and hap- piness in whatever roles you may choose for yourself and your family in the years ahead. , Douglas D.
