Conrad. It is extremely difficult to convey a complete picture of Dean Conrad. She deals with many people on many levelsg her influence is felt throughout the college. Hers is a per- sonality of warmth and sensitivity which inspires confidence and promotes unity. Her own experiences at a junior college for women. combined with a master's degree in counseling psychology. provide her with a wealth of understanding of our needs and aspirations. While instilling respect and admiration for the traditions and ideals of this college, she remains in constant search of the identity of the individual. We respect her judgment and admire her ability to give of herself under any circum- stances. Thus, We, the Class of 1966, with feelings of deep warmth and affection, dedicate this Portico to you, Marcia H. Conrad. 2 f-fr-we f ' A ri., U - f' 5... . . h 537 lr 1 V '-1-, -T-1'7'-ig..-5, ,491 , A ' .'-55 ?,j-3'-1-.i.4q5iv,--j,- R, gp , , ,, N -K, y,.?.,-pa ,,,,f.,I,N . , . .y. t ...Y l,-:if pf Q 'l::'. And in 1897, Bay Path Institute was founded to fulfill that need. For many years, the Institute served the eiij, ot' Springlield, Massachusetts, and neighboring communities with programs in secretarial science. accounting and business-teaching training. From an original enrollment of thirty students, the Institute grew. . . lor forty-eight years, the Institute expanded and continued to meet the chal- erige brought about by the modern needs of the twentieth century. X :iifiiiicntous change-from a coeducational urban center for business training -t .1 suburban secretarial school for women-was effected four years later when E. lu iivute i.-. as moved to the residential community of Longmeadow, and became -.r is Hay Path Secretarial School. Mr. George H. Empsall proxided Bay Path's lirst dormitory facilities when he presented limpsall Hall. once a private home. to the college. As Bay Path's physical plant grew, its academic otferings were by no means going unrecognized. Authorization to award the As- sociate in Science degree was granted to the college in 1949 by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Glen Hall, formerly a garage, was converted into additional classrooms and an art studio in 1956. Additional quarters for resident students were made possible through the philanthropy of Mr. Hiram Bollum, a college trustee. His generous bequest made Bollum Hall, a modem dormitory housing l 16 young women, a reality in 1960. This building immediately became the hub ot' student activities as teas. art exhibits, dances, and special dinners were held there. A third residence hall was added to Bay Path's physical plant when a private home was converted into Perkins Hall in 1961. Bay Path's only building that is separated from the main campus by Long- meadow Street had previously been a Church of Christ. Mr. Frank S. Hatch gave a substantial gift of books to the college library in 1958. and Hateh Nlemorial Library is named in his memory. ln 1963 Bay Path was authorized by the Commonwealth ol' Nlassaehusetts to grant the Associate in Arts degree. The colleges academic program was expanded to include the liberal arts curriculum in September of the previous year. The lirst A.A. degrees from Bay Path Junior College were granted in June, 196-1. A modern classroom building was constructed in 1963 and named Carr Hall in honor of Thomas G. Carr, President of Bay Path. Among its features are seminar rooms, modern language and science laboratories. and an auditorium. In limi Mills Little Theatre was added to Carr Hall. Provided for by Mrs. Ada C Nlills ol' Springfield, Massachusetts. the addition was named in memory ol' her late hus- band. Mr. Erwin F. Mills. The 500-seat theatre houses several dressing rooms and a cyelorama. which encloses the stage and acts as a backdrop for choral groups and speakers. Bay Path now has one ol' the linest raked theatres in the area. As years went by, Bay Path's horizons were broadened. ln physical plant. and in academics, the college expanded . . . 's rzzqa' ' Lglkliolgnl' A fvwf ll 23 The college year Woo-67 will mark the continuation of Bay Path's expansion. Two new academic programs will be initiated-pre-teach- ing and legal secretarial. ln the fall of 1967 a nursing program will be added to Bay Path's curriculum. Students graduating in this field xxill be fully registered nurses. Few junior colleges in this area offer such an extensive program West Hall is being enlarged to include: a dining room to accom- modate 500 persons, a faculty dining area, a bookstore, several ollices, and a snack bar. These new facilities will provide for relaxing meals enjoyed in a gracious atmosphere. Georgian architecture is the design of the spacious dormitory ris- ing on the south lawn. The new residence will house 150 young women, several lounges, and a 14-bed infirmary.
