Elected by the voters for o tour-yeor term, the members do not receive salaries. Their duties include determining the policies of the four schools, hiring the superintendent, and employing all school personnel, upon the recommendation at the superintendent. They also supervise the building and maintenance of all schools. At present, they ore awaiting the open- ing of the newest grade school, Westerly. The school is scheduled to open in the fall of l956. The senior class chase a long standing popular hit, Arsenic and Old Lace, tor its play this year. lt was a three-act com- edy-mystery with emphasis on the comedy, lt was the story ot two old ladies who made it a practice to shelter old men. All went well until their nephew Mortimer tound the graves of twelve boarders in the basement ot the aunt's home. A favorite character was Teddy, who spent his time digging the Panama Canal and fighting the Battle of Bunker l-lill, because he believed he was President Roos- lf's on the house - Teddy evelt, In the end, Teddy's and his aunt's antics sent them on their way to Happy- dale. This question was on everyone's lips, but only after the students' votes were counted would they know. At lang last, everyone gathered in the gym and Doug Dudley and Jan Keller, atten- ded by Stan Feeley, Paul Patterson, Kay Nichols, Jan Sandrock, and Sally Wheeler, emerged as king and queen. The student body responded to the entrance ot the royal pair and their court with a thunderous cheer as they ascended the stairs to the throne. The most impressive part of the ceremowy was the administration of the title Knights of the Gridiron to the kneeling varsity football team by Queen Jan. Santo 5 He men 6 Skrunch' Senior Class History lContinued from page 355 aback when she found a street light in front of the door -- and Sandy Spang's friends found they had no trouble in finding her driveway-they just looked for the Bump sign, Dexter Jacobson was responsible for a siege of peroxixde blondes when it was rumored that he bleached his hair. The class was privileged in having four girls lead the band majorettes. Pat Kessler, Cornelia Korney, Melvina Meether, and Helene Pirnat were so honored, and the following year Cornelia became head ma- icrette. Six ambitious girls formed the Choralettes, a singing group, in the ninth grade, and one of Jan Sandrock's talents - her ability to play the violin - was dis- covered the same year. Spring vacation proved to be a bad time, as Jean Disbrow and Al Bruscino broke their wrists, while Tom Henry came down with an acute case of appendicitis. Nancy Reese accidentally -on-purpose dumped Ivory soap flakes in a dishwasher in home economics class, pro- ducing dishes that were 99 44 IOOQ6 pure. Tenth grade found the fellows gaining interest and yards in sports as Alex Brus- cino, Lanny Dey, Doug Dudley, Stan Feeley, Tom Henry, Larry Houk, Dexter Jacobson Paul Patterson, Dave Hinz, and Dud Weid- er received their first letters in varsity foot- ball. Dud Weider proved his athletic skill as he skated his way to fame among the ccuntry's top ten of the speed skating world. The girls got into the swing of things, too, as thirty-seven tried out in I the cheering contest. After what seemed like weeks of waiting, the fortunate three were announcedi Kay Nichols, Janet Sand- rcck, and Sally Wheeler. Gwen Hughes reluctantly moved to Toledo only to re- turn a month later with the glad tidings O e hundred three that her father had been transferred back to Cleveland again. The junior year found the Class of '56 gleefully taking advantage of the fact that they were upperclassmen. Carl Roth was one of the first of the boys who bought cars of their own, which they Hsouped up with dual pipes, Hollywood mufflers, etc. Dave Nemec returned from Florida, and he proved a valuable addition to the football, basketball and baseball teams. The class ordered rings and jackets, and then eager- ly awaited their delivery. Jerry Pfleger, selling S418 worth of magazine subscrip- tions in the yearly drive, was awarded a Smith-Corona typewriter, thus proving the merits of his Fuller Brush training. Foot- ball glory went to Autograph Jacobson's head, while Pizza Dindia, Smiley Max- field, Doug Dudley, and Susanne Graham were among those who performed at the dinner-dance party at Lakewood Country Club, celebrating Bay's championship in its first year in the Southwestern Conference. Liz Gustason, who has aspirations of being a nurse, didn't get off to a good start. She suffered a slight brain concussion when she fainted after taking a blood test at Boy View Hospital. Demonstration speech- es in public speaking classes reached a climax when Nancylee Chappell washed the little bit of hair that Matt Clark had for a demonstration of Pink Shampoo. John Rix, one of the inventors of the class, rigged up a motor-gadget on a pencil sharp- ener, which gave some girls quite a shock when they tried to sharpen their pencils. Myrna Whiteman became the subject of all first year typing classes when she typed sixty-five words a minute without error - this immediately discouraged the students, rather than encouraged them. Sue La- Londe took her shoes off once too often in typing class, and they were next seen in the hall, courtesy of Mrs. Oelschlager. Russ Carson was awarded the Kitzerow gold star la great honorl when he came to class equipped with both paper and pencil. Twelve fortunate members of the class were inducted into the National Honor Society, four into Quill and Scroll, and eight into Thespians. Jim Hill literally blew his cor- onet to musical fame, and the Southern Four Plus One, a Dixieland Jazz group, pepped up the class as it progressed to- wards the final year of high school. Dale Sawyer, Lowell Dixie Richards, and Joe Webb became partners in a hobby shop business, which, unfortunately, was located in Westlake - the traitorsl Carol Matz took third place in the Lakewood Rotary Contest, and Myrna Whitteman won a tro- phy as a result of winning the American Legion essay contest. Springtime brought Student Council elections, with Jan Borgia winning the election to become the second feminine president in Bay High's history. Sally Wheeler and Speedy Hinz were clected to Athletic Council, and Dud Weid- er to serve on Tribunal. Paul Patterson and Doug Dudley were elected by their teammates to be co-captains of the '55 football team, and Jan Sandrock became head cheerleader. Dex .lacobson again proved his athletic ability when he won the pingpong tournament sponsored by the Student Council. On Moy 7, the juniors treated the senior class with the prom. The theme, Paradise on Earth, was un- veiled to the guests, and a chicken dinner was served preceding dancing in the beauti- fully transformed gymnasium. Parties at Sally Lease's, .lan Keller's, and Al Brus- cino's homes were held afterward until six o'clock in the morning. There was also dancing on the tennis courts. The senior year got off with a bang, as many parties were given. Some outstande ing oncs were: Bob Perkin's Rock and Roll Party, at which Mr. Colbert hypnotized Gail Maddock, Lindsay Chichester's surprise birthday party for Rosemary Bunt, and Nancy Reese's, which was marred by the fact that Cornelia Korney smashed her left thumb in Ray Colombo's car door. As a result, she was unable to twirl her baton with her left hand at the next two football games. Sue Murray was chosen with twen- ty-four other girls in the country to com- bine her senior year of high school with her freshman year of college at Stephens College in Columbia, Missouri. The foot- ball team finished a rainy season in sec- ond place in the Southwestern Conference, as River ruined the lO-game winning streak to win the title. The last game of the sea- son, which was with Westlake, was Home- coming. King Doug Dudley and Queen Jan Keller reigned, with Stan Feeley, Paul Patterson, Kay Nichols, Jan Sandrock, and Sally Wheeler as their court. The senior play, Arsenic and Old Lace, was success- fully presented on the night of November l8th, with Sue Fritz and Carol Matz co- starring. During spring vacation the sen- iors visited Washington, D.C., as part of their education, and they were guests at a prom given in their honor by the junior class. On June 7, l956, as the seniors walked down the aisle to the strains of Pomp and Circumstance, they thought of the past thirteen years, years which have passed, and can never be recovered, but which are only happy memories. And then they thought ahead to future years - college, working, military service, or marriage. Thirteen years . . . spent in preparing themselves for their future accomplish- ments and disappointments.
