| | Pelican —upotlight Here we SPOTLIGHT features of scenic beauty on our campus: stately pines rear- ing dark against Florida’s blue sky; covered walkways that link many of our buildings and suggest the interrelationship in our broad curriculum; and the front door-way of the main structure ..... the rich symbol of high school entrance and departure. awa ys gai The - Bay Lounty Y COURT) HIGHS High School Panama Lity os = ee ee Florida 1960 in ossorniconivniy Page Six Were boing To Forget We’re going to forget many of the things that made our high school days worthwhile; we'll lose some of the enthusiasm and eagerness we now have; even a few of our cherished memories will be lost with the passage of time. Realizing this, it is the job of your PELICAN to keep these memories alive. its purpose is to record the year’s activities in such a way that the turn of each page will lead us back over, the old paths, cause us to relive experiences, renew old friendships, and in some small way recapture moments that are gone. Progress and growth come as old landmarks and familiar corridors become unrecognizable. These, as do old friendships, recede to the realm of memory. Again, with this realization before us, we spotlight memorable events, personalities, ideas, attitudes, and ideals, characteristic of the educational structure of the Bay County High School as we know it. Now as we face the possible division of our stu- dent body, made necessary by its phenomenal growth during the past three decades, the complete dissolv- ing of the Panama Grammar School, our original Bay High, we can say, “Let tomorrow come! Let Bay High School, tnrough the years, progress: and expand be- yond our recognition.” All of us will glory in it. And now with the turn of these pages we catch a fleeting glance of the Bay High we cherish! You have inspired us to find our better selves and at the same time have been one of us. You are a credit to your community, your profession, and an invaluable member of the Bay County High School Faculty. For all you have meant to us, we respectfully: dedicate this the 1960 PELICAN to you, Miss Eleanor Henshaw. opotlight On You As You Participate Is the gang all here? Yea, man! School activities got off to a rocking start as the Student Council sponsored a_ Friendship week early in September. At the conclusion of the week, new sophomores were clued in on their first Bay High event, the Friendship dance at the Youth Center. As a result of the Friendship dance, the membership of our Youth Center was greatly increased. Old and new members alike came again and again to enjoy, not only dancing, but also ping-pong, pool, various card games, or just sitting around watching T.V. and catching up on the latest gossip. Al- ways from the juke box you could hear Paul Anka crooning “Put Your Head on My Shoulder,” or Bo Diddly pounding out “Say man.” During football season, our school spirit rose to an all time high as we cheered the Tornadoes on to victory. As a highlight of football season, many alumni returned for the annual homecoming activities. Baytowners proved that they were inter- ested not only in their own pleasure but al- so in the welfare of others as they filled Christmas baskets for the needy, supported the Church Crusade, and worked diligently in the Polio Drive. Early in December, the Seniors began to plan for the yearly Christmas Ball which was held at the beautiful new Panama City Marina. The dance was a great success and really put us all in the mood for Christmas. Later in the year, the Juniors had a chance to try to outshine the Seniors as they prepared for the Junior-Senior Prom. Both Seniors and Juniors entertained capacity crowds as they presented their class plays. We remember also some of our crazy fads, like bongo drums, desert boots, and beatnik slang. As graduation comes around, we look back with mixed emotion and re- live the wonderful activities we took part in this year. We also look forward to the future and the promise of rewards that we know it will bring. Page Eleven KAt adg mise pirdog put itkat xxyx zz ¢ | hafe a dag and his nameid Vakie, Blackie. The proceeds of this work day enable us to produce an annual without any adver- tising. It is the sincere wish of each Pelican staff member that you will enjoy this edition for many years to come. Thank you, Pam Byrd, Editor One demerit for standing on the grass! Page Seventy-Four opotlight Un You As You Socialize Bay High students are very fortunate to have such a great variety of social activities in which to paritcipate. Each fall students anxiously await the exciting Home- coming activities. Each club selects a homecoming queen candidate and from these candidates, the queen is elected by the student body. The five finalists for home- coming queen are presented to the student body at | the Big Blow on the night before the big game. Each candidate is presented at the homecoming parade on Friday night. This year, the lovely Miss Pam Byrd reigned over the homecoming festivities. Another long-awaited event is the annual Senior Ball which is held in December. Each year, the Tornado Whirl sponsors a contest to select Miss Tornado Whirl. Each class selects four sweethearts and Miss Tornado Whirl is selected from these. This year, at the Senior Ball, Joan Brock, editor of the Tornado Whirl, crowned the charming Miss Judy Patton, Miss Tornado Whirl. In early Spring, the Junior Class honors the Senior Class by giving them a lovely formal. The Junior- Senior Prom is always one of the highlights of the year’s activities. Students cheered the Tornadoes through football, basketball, baseball and track seasons. Football season started off with a bang as the Big Red won their first two games and tied their game with Robert E. Lee. As the season progressed, how- ever, injuries depleted the team, but the fighting Tor- nadoes closed out the season with a 4-4-1 record. The Tornadoes had a victorious basketball season with a 13 won-7 lost record. Both home and out-of-town games were enthusiastically supported by cheering Bay High’s students. Interested boys eagerly participated in baseball and track as the year moved along. Baseball has always been a favorite sport of Floridians and track is now becoming more popular among sportsmen. The Pelican proudly spotlights our participation in sports, because we feel that we build character, sports- manship and leadership “as we play.” Page Eighty-Three ' Page Eighty-Four FRONT ROW, Left to Right: Carroll Howell, Johnny Bell, Dwight Brown, David Mix, Bill Keith, John Locke, Bobby Van Hook, Bill Maxwell, Don Patterson, Ray Cooper, Bobby Drake, Jimmy Stephens, Ronnie Murfee, Hayden Helms, Hal Allen. After the usual petitions to abolish homework failed, Baytowners settled down to another year of fun, worry (?), and worthwhile effort. Once again teachers pulled out their old exams and Coach Oliver put to use his “board of education.” Mrs. Oliver had the usual number of book deficiencies, and regular book checks uncovered scores of lost library books that had been hiding (?) in students’ lockers. Football prac- tice moved along in the mud, the band played on, glee clubs were organized, Mrs. Brown sent out innumerable college transcripts, and student guidance was on its way. These things do not happen without planning! Planning and lots of it! Even though we fuss about the results of such planning—homework and courses—we are really grateful for a faculty of very competent teachers. Not only do they fill our heads with facts and figures, but they help us to prepare for adult life and its many responsibilities. It is a significant fact that the best schools are the ones which maintain a rather stabilized faculty. Here again, Bay High comes to the fore! Many of our key teachers have worked in our school for more than a decade. Teacher stability such as this, makes long-range educational plan- ning possible. Again let us spotlight Bay High Schools phenomenal growth from a faculty of seven members in 1926 to a present staff of eight-five qualified teachers. Page One Hundred One JOHN M. AS THEY MATURE, they accept more and more responsibili- ties. Early each fall, the Juniors begin to plan for one of their major projects—the Junior Class Play. This year’s pro- duction of “Where’s Charley” was very successful. Then comes the Junior-Senior Prom, an exciting event that the upperclassmen look forward to each year. The prom gives the Juniors a chance to outshine the Seniors and each class member is given an opportunity to serve on one of the many committees. Early in the spring the Juniors place orders for class rings. We at Bay High School are proud of the fact that the seal featured on our ring and on the cover of this Peli- can, is the oldest seal existing in the State of Florida. As the Juniors select their rings, they begin to realize the impor- tance of the fact that they are next year’s Seniors and that the future of the Bay County High School rests on their shoulders. Fortunately, they have reached this stage in their maturity. Secretary; Helen Walker, Treasurer. Long looked for, hard come by. This stage of our growth was reached via eleven years of study, planning and sheer hard work. As a class, Seniors contribute leadership in the var- ious phases of school life. Many officers of our various school organizations are from the senior class. The seniors contribute service—service through partici- pation in such organizations as Student Council, the school clubs and through assuming responsibility for the school publications. The Seniors contribute a pattern of scholarship which should inspire under classmen to study hard in order to get the very best education possible. They contribute to the illustrious “Bay High Hall of Fame,” they contribute of their best students to the colleges of the United States. They contribute their general “know-how” in the home, as they’ve reached this stage of their maturing. Seniors set the pattern for enthusiasm in school life. Their school spirit overflows at football and basketball games, and at district and state conventions. Under- classmen reflect this enthusiasm that they see in the Seniors. Seniors are facing life with a full knowledge of its nossibilities, its responsibilities and its demands. To be able to meet these challenges has been our goal through twelve years of school life. Boys and birls State Byrd and Joan Brock Bay High Students are always eager to participate in the annual Boys and Girls State conventions. This year Pam Byrd and Joan Brock represented Bay High at Girls State and Gene Cain, Dewey Conrad, Tommy Haney, and Butch White were delegates to Boys State. : These students gained valuable knowledge about our 2 state laws and governmental agencies. Boys and Girls State representatives will eventually move up into these high offices as they mature and as they become ready - “to contribute.” ‘ Page One Hundred Ninety-Eight MRS. MARGARET FIELDS “ ... And departing leave behind us, Footprints on the sands of time.” Mrs. Fields has retired after having taught for twenty- one years at Bay High. She leaves behind a record of accomplishment, of which she can be truly proud. To point out a few for the record—She organized the first F.H.A. chapter in the state of Florida; served on a committee to form the constitution for the National F.H.A. organization; served as advisor to the local chapter since its beginning; was awarded state honor- ary degree by the Florida F.H.A.; directed beautifica- tion campaigns around the school campus; arranged for the senior parking lots to be paved; and many, many other things. Perhaps the thing that will linger longest in the hearts of the Bay graduates, is the fact that Mrs. Fields served as Senior Class sponsor for fourteen years— arranging those exciting senior affairs—measuring us for caps and gowns .. . ordering our invitations . and throughout all these years of busy activity, she found time to teach her beloved subject, HOMEMAK- ING.
