We truly hope that this holds true in thi s 1953 PELICAN, We realize that this theme of music isn't a new idea. As we were thinking of a theme, in which all Bay High stu- dents could come closer together, music immediately came to our minds. Music will always be in the hearts of everyone. As years go by and you think of yesteryear's tunes, we hope that the 1953 PELICAN willcome to your mind first! Safe in the arms of God, Safe on His gentle breast, There by His love o'er shadowed Sweetly my soul shall rest.... J 2 To the memory of Bay High's beloved Billy Hamm, we do proudly dedicate our '53 Pelican. All who knew Billy loved him. His friend- liness and willingness to help others left an ever -lingering song in our hearts. Bay High will go on growing----yet, there willbmever be another here... .quite like Billy. Uponentering Bay High, we realized what a great step this was and of course we tried to do our best. As we walk down memory lane, let us recall some of the outstanding events in our high school life. We entered Bay High as a group of bewildered and frustrated freshmen in 1949. Immediately our class took a vivid interest in the affairs and activities of the school. To start off right, we elected David Raulerson as president of our class, Richard Muterspaugh as vice-president, and Mary Dell Vance as secretary-treasurer. With a successful year behind us and with a little more courage, we once again entered the halls of Bay High for our sophomore year. This time we elected for our class officers, Richard Muterspaugh - president, Laurence Avery - vice- president, Jim Cannon - secretary, and Mickey Pope - treas- urer. By this time our class members held prominent positions in the various clubs. Barbara Barlowe was secretary of the Student Council. These first two years at Bay High were only important steps to our last two and most eventful years. The leaders of our junior class: President - Carlee Hendrix, vice-president - Bill Bailey, and Secretary - treasurer - Anne Carey Lee, were elected at the first of the year. We really worked hard on the concessions at the football games so that we could give the ''best prom ever'! and that is exactly what we did! Our theme was ''Under the Sea, Our junior play was also one of the ''best ever.'' The name of it was, ''The Bride's Stand-In,'' and the cast included: Asa Maynor, Carolyn Daniel, Herbert Grimsley, Peggy Hutchison, Russel Phillips, Laurence Avery, Doris Ann Lee, and Bill Bailey. During our junior year many honors were brought to our school through members of our class. Gretchen Nelson was elected a state officer of the Florida Future Homemakers, Wade Swicord was president of the Northwest Florida Association of Student Councils. Every junior class member had done their part to contribute 26 Ane iecords---- to our success in everything. It was hard to choose those to represent us at Girls State and Boys State but we finally decided. Gretchen Nelson, Ann Cruce, and Anne Carey Lee went to Girls State while Albert Rowell, Frank Mustoe, Bill Bailey, and Laurence Avery went to Boys State. This climaxed our year as juniors of Bay High. We felt that we were well prepared for ''The Year of all Years-that long awaited senior year.'' It seemed good to be the ones setting the example and leading the whole school, But also we knew how important it was to set the right example so to start off, Albert Rowell was elected the leader of our class with Carlee Hendrix to assist him. Anne Carey Lee was elected secretary and Barbara James was elected to handle our finances, . Wade Swicord was president of the student body and did and excellent job, He had had experience the year before as vice- president, For officers of state organizations, we had Anne Carey Lee as parliamentarian of The Florida Future Homemakers and Ann Cruce as secretary of the Florida Latin Clubs. Jean Biggs was our homecoming queen. Joyce Campbell was head cheerleader. Gretchen Nelson was awarded the Daan, vedal, Soon, it was time for our banquet. We, seniors enjoyed the food, fellowship, and entertainment in the atmosphere of a Valentine theme. The next big event was the Senior play. Main characters were: Dolores Mead, Peggy Hutchison, Charles Walsh, Asa Maynor, Philip Johnson, Jimmy Hoskins, Richard Sturgis, Billy Hardy, Lee Stephens, George Hicks, Jerry Fleming, and Rainesford French, Of course, our committees did an unusually good job and the play w as a huge success, Another highlight of our senior year was Skip Day. All the members of the graduating class of 1953 were outstanding and this is the thing that made our four years at Bay High so very outstanding. We shall never forget the things we learned from one another and the lasting friendships we made. As time draws near for graduation, may we remember to continue to do our best always.
