Dr. Eric J. BracLner, Dean Dedication To the students of the college: The 1958-1959 college year has brought the college several firsts. For the first time our full-time student body exceeded 1000 students. For the first time many of our classrooms were located away from the main building. For the first time parking facilities were pro¬ vided behind the main building and for the first time our full-time faculty numbered more than fifty. This has been a year of achievement in all areas of collegiate life. Much of this success has been due to the efforts of the graduating class of 1959. Our best wishes go with them. Eric J. As this year’s sports editor, I decided to give as much coverage to sports as possible. It is, and always has been, my opinion that the sports program is a very important part of college life. My staff and I are in accord with that old proverb, “one picture is worth 1000 words ”. Therefore, we have made an effort to obtain as many candid photographs as possible. We hope you enjoy them. Due to the fact that this book must go to press before the spring sports, the tennis, golf, track, and baseball schedule of this year will be covered in next year’s Crucible. I would like, at this time, to extend my thanks and appreciation to those who have so ably assisted in making this section of the yearbook possible. Thanks to Bill Gasta who took many of the pictures used in this section, Ken Chapman who donated the action photos from the state swimming meet, and A1 Kayner who ga¬ thered information on the cross country team. ATHLETICS’ FOREWORD Bay City Junior College is very proud of its athletic teams. We feel that we have a coaching staff second to none in the state. Our athletic teams this year have been in the thick of every championship race in the Michigan Junior College Athletic Conference, which has twelve junior colleges as members. Bay City fields teams in cross country, swimming, basketball, tennis, golf, track and base¬ ball. Plans are being made to add football in the near future. We feel that intercollegiate athletics enables those who excel in certain sports to participate in a wide program of activities and also gives the student body and community a chance to see college teams in action in this area. For the average student, who does not excel, but enjoys playing sports on a limited scale, we have a wide list of intramural sports. These include touch football, bowling, golf, ten¬ nis, skiing, table tennis, archery, and softball. The Michigan Junior College Ath¬ letic Conference has extended its program into this field by having a Christmas bowling tournament, -a Spring bowling tournament, and a Winter ski meet, as well as a Fall and Spring archery meet. Bay City is very fortunate to have one of the finest athletic plants in the state. The gymnasium, which seats 3500 people, is the largest in Northern Michigan, and is the site for State District and Regional high school basketball tournaments. Our physical education plant is so designed that the physical education department can handle archery, handball, volley ball, badminton, swimming, and basketball. The policy of this department is to get the students in better physical conditon and to teach him the skills and rules of carry-over sports that he might be inter¬ ested in after getting out of school. Bottom row: Delaney, Boodger, Bothwell, Dutcher, Grunder, Skulanes, Walkowiak, Kayner, Ryder, Barsenas. The 1958 track and field team had a good season, winning 1 out of 3 dual meets, winning 2 out of 3 triangular meets and finishing second in the third state meet. This does not include the annual inter team meet which was won by the Frosh by the score of 86 to 47 over their upper classmen. The team set several new records and tied some records that were set in previous years. Ralph Hinton and Willie Smith each tied the 100 yard dash record in the time of 10 seconds flat. He also tied the 220 yard dash record, which he had set the previous year, in 22.6 seconds. Doug Doane set a new Javelin record with a toss of 178 feet, 3 inches. Chuck Delaney set a discus throwing record of 118 feet, 7 inches. In the state meet Ralph Hinton placed second in the broad jump, and Doug Doane took a second in the discus. Hinton took a third in the 220 yard dash, Don Stevenson nailed down a third in the broad jump and Delaney won a third in the shot put. Ruffin tied for a fourth in the high jump, and Jones took a fourth in the javelin. Our relay team of Kayner, Barowski, Bothwell, and Neering also took a fourth. The team did a good job, and the coach hopes for another good record. In the state meet held in Midland, Bay City Junior College placed 6th with a total of 336 strokes. Gary Howlett tees off. Jim Chapman sends one toward the green. mmk Tennis Team 1958 First row—Bob Daner, Jack Neal, Keith Robertson. Second row—Ron Haut, Dave Immerman, Bob Giannaris, and Coach Stry. 1958’s tennis team broke even with 5 wins and 5 losses. When they won, they won by big scores and when they lost it was only by 1 point. Four out of the 5 matches were lost by only 1 point. The team did very well in the regionals, ty¬ ing Highland Park and Flint for first place. In the State meet, we placed 5th, ty¬ ing with Flint. In the singles Don Farrar led with 8 wins out of 10. Bob Dauer had 7 wins, Ron Haut and Jack Neal each had 6, and Dave.Immerman had 5 wins to his credit. Out of the seven combinations in the doubles, the combo of Haut and Neal were the most effective taking 5 wins. Although seeming to be the weakest point on the team, it was the doubles that carried us to a first place tie in the regionals. Back Row—Left to Right: Berry Booger, Bob Yant, Bob Kent, Willie Thompson, Paul Watson, Doug Adams, Don Kemph, Coach Lynn Conway. The Bay City Junior College cross country team, known as “Dar¬ by’s Rangers”, had an excellent season winning 8 and losing 3 meets. They placed third in the state out of 8 teams and fifth in the Region¬ al Meet. Members of the team were Dick Darby, Ed Neview, Doug Adams, Russ Stowers, Ed Shrelunas, A1 Kayner, Willie Thompson, Bob Kent, Don Kempf, Paul Watson, and a late comer to the team, Bob Yant. In the scoring of a meet, the first five runners score points ac¬ cording to their finish. For example, Bay City runners finished 4th, 14th, 17th, 22nd, and 26th, in the state meet for a total of 83 points. The lowest score wins in a cross country meet. On this and the next page are pictures of several of our cross country runners taken at one of their meets. Reserve Basketball First Row: Coach Mueller, Bernard Stelters, Bill Kolleth, William Brieske, Jack Barker. Second Row: Fred Neering, Carl Beutell, Russ Stowers, Ken Franklin. This year ' s edition of the Junior College reserve basketball team won 6 and lost 6 games. The res erves played 6 games against other junior college reserve teams, where they won 3 and lost 3 games. The reserves won the annual alumni game and against 5 teams for city leagues, the team won 2 and lost 3. One of these losses came at the hands of Farragut in a double over time game by the score of 61 to 59. Varsity Basketball Team Left to Right: Joe Fobear, Kris Matthews, Dick Yates, Willy Thompson, Mike McCuen, Jim Kanary, Ed Neview, Tom DeLisle, Alex Kryska, and Coach Conway. The ’58-’59 season saw one of the best records ever made by Bay City Junior College’s basketball team. The Badgers, coached by Lynn Conway, had 16 victo¬ ries against 7 losses for the total season. The regular season’s record was 13 wins against 5 defeats. The Badgers twice hit the century mark in scoring. The first time was a trouncing of the Alumni to a score of 100 to 48. Bay City made 102 points against Dearborn’s 97 in regular league play. Scores reaching the ninety mark were not unusual for the Badgers. High-point-man was Jim Kanary dumping in about 400 points. Wee Willy Thompson was second by scoring around 340 points and Dick Yates followed a close third with a little over 300 points. Bay City Junior College finished third after a few tense weeks of leading the pack. The good balance of scoring power is credited for J. C.’s good year. The Badgers were represented on the All State Junior College Team by Jim Kanary and Wee Willy Thompson on the first team and Dick Yates on the second team. Swimming Team 1958 Row 1: Bill Mercer, Dave Talaga, Ivan Wetter, Bill Merkle, Ken Chapman, Rory Brown, Cur¬ tis Bland, Bob Antcliff. The advertising pages of this year¬ book are an experiment. We are confident that this venture will prove an important event. • We of the Bay City Junior College, Class of 1959, firmly be¬ lieve that imagination in advertising can be an effective weapon to be used against the customary accepted courtesy ads usu¬ ally displayed in the advertising section of a yearbook. • Your reactions are vital, not just for the sake of this year¬ book, but for the future of yearbook advertising as a medium to sell the merchants who, each year, spend billions of dollars to solicit the young adult influence in the family and who advertise in a yearbook (which talks exclusively to the young adult) with complimentary-style advertisements. • We sincerely mean HELP WANTED! The help you give us will benefit every grade school, high school, and college annual that will go to press. • Any comments or further ideas and techniques are neces¬ sary and should be submitted to the future yearbook staffs of this and other such annuals. • Inserted now is a further note to thank the participating advertisers for their part in making this section a success and to ask them for their ideas for the annuals of the future. • It is our belief that an advertising section of this nature will create a more widespread readership by both students and par¬ ents and will, above all, benefit the advertisers concerned.
