jpAewond bti’ the e iiosi So often lately our ears have caught such expressions as, “This is the age of rapid prog¬ ress” and “The world is traveling so fast these days”. Everyone seems to be talking and thinking of speed—speed on an immense scale of progress. This vast conception sometimes may throw a scare into our seemingly insignificant minds, as we plod along like the fabled tortoise, advancing perhaps, we think, sometimes not at all. Yet, these conceptions of progress are but mere paradoxes when we examine them closely, for it is the people of the world who turn the wheels of progress. It is we who determine the speed and progress of the world—everyone of us: the engineer who is the mind of the scientific realm, the teacher who is the mouth of knowledge, the journalist: the writing hand of world affairs, the accountant: the vigilant eye, checking on all business, the merchant: the wheel of economic development. Thus, we see that each of us has a hand in the progress of the world today. We are all integral parts of the “forward look”. It is this “look”, so much a part of our lives recently, that will be portrayed in this book. Throughout the theme of this annual we will recognize messages and symbols of progress. These figureheads of the modern era are not to be taken by themselves alone, but as symbols of what we have already done, are now doing, and attempt to accomplish in time. two
