jpAewond bti’ the e iiosi So often lately our ears have caught such expressions as, “This is the age of rapid prog¬ ress” and “The world is traveling so fast these days”. Everyone seems to be talking and thinking of speed—speed on an immense scale of progress. This vast conception sometimes may throw a scare into our seemingly insignificant minds, as we plod along like the fabled tortoise, advancing perhaps, we think, sometimes not at all. Yet, these conceptions of progress are but mere paradoxes when we examine them closely, for it is the people of the world who turn the wheels of progress. It is we who determine the speed and progress of the world—everyone of us: the engineer who is the mind of the scientific realm, the teacher who is the mouth of knowledge, the journalist: the writing hand of world affairs, the accountant: the vigilant eye, checking on all business, the merchant: the wheel of economic development. Thus, we see that each of us has a hand in the progress of the world today. We are all integral parts of the “forward look”. It is this “look”, so much a part of our lives recently, that will be portrayed in this book. Throughout the theme of this annual we will recognize messages and symbols of progress. These figureheads of the modern era are not to be taken by themselves alone, but as symbols of what we have already done, are now doing, and attempt to accomplish in time. two table, ol c Hte iti three Yes, we, the students of Bay City Junior College salute you for the many faithful years you have spent in our midst and for all the accomplishments which you have achieved for this community. You have seen thousands of students pass in and out of these school doors. Now it is our turn to cast our eyes on you as you bow out as registrar of this institution. You have been a master cog in this school’s progress, spending numberless hours in its service. In gratification for this, we dedicate this book to you-the dedicated. To The Students of the College: This has been a year of great significance in that during this year Bay City Junior College has gone to the forefront among the junior and community colleges in the state of Michigan. Out of a tremendous ferment has come a picture of the future. Our student population has in¬ creased this year by more than 10 per cent. Many new faculty members have been secured to serve us. Our standards of achievement have been raised to the point where we are able to hold up our heads no matter what the field of work might be. This has indeed been a year of progress. The people of our area have established a new college which will begin operations in a few years. This new institution will take us into badly needed new physical facilities to which we are looking forward. Congratulations to the graduating class on having taken a very significant part in the events of this critical year in our college’s growth. Eric J. Bradner, Dean baawl oi edLicatian, Elwyn J. Bay City is a member of the Michigan Junior College Athletic Conference, which has twelve junior colleges as members. Bay City fields teams in cross country, swimming, basketball, golf, tennis, and track; and future plans are made to add baseball and football. Intercollegiate athletics enables those who excell in certain sports to participate in a wide program of activities and also gives the student body and community a chance to see college teams in action in this area. Our program also includes a wide list of intramural sports for the average student who does not excell but enjoys playing sports on a limited scale. Intra¬ murals are carried on throughout the year in touch football, bowling, golf, tennis, table tennis, and softball. Bay City is very fortunate to have one of the finest athletic plants in the state, with a gym¬ nasium that seats thirty-five hundred people and a physical education plant that enables the physical education department to handle handball, archery, volleyball, badminton, swimming, and basketball in different teaching stations. The policy of this department is to get the stu¬ dent in better physical condition and to teach him the rules of such carry-over sports as golf, tenilis, archery, bowling, and marksmanship. Palmer B.
