WATERMAN BAY CITY MICHIGAN vamsme ll BAY CITY JUNIOR COLLEGE Dean o: “omen Dear Readers: In this year of 1953, the Crucible annual is dedicated to the Triumvirate of Bay City Junior College; Doctor Eric J. Bradner; Dean of Men, Palmer Kern; and Dean of Women, Lois Waterman. These three have proven themselves unparalleled examples of leadershin for our college. They have shown | authority without superiority. Through long hours of | hard work, patience, and understanding, they have con- tributed much to their college and their students. We, the students, have all profited from the guiding advice of Dean Bradner in the categories of curriculun, future careers, and everyday living. We know Dean Kern as an advisor to men concerning their problems from their drafting classes to their draft status. He is also director of our college athletics. And Dean Waterman, in her two years here, has managed to chat personally with all women about their studies and adjustment to junior college life. She has also initiated several new all- college projects. So to these three we proudly dedicate this book. MICHIGAN Dear Faculty: To you who have given so much time and ef- fort so that we could further our education, we Say thanx you, There have been times vhen we, the students, thought you must have burned the midnight oils looking uo nard questions for a test or thinking up hard assignments, but now that another year is over, we can forgive you. The student-faculty relationship at J.C. is one of the outstanding attributes of the college. We disagree on some minor points as most students and taculty do, but when it comes to the major cecisions we sticx together to make Bay City Junior College a school to be ad- mired. Now that commencement is near for the sooh- omores, and a vacation is in sight for the freshman, our little skirmishes can be tucked away way back in the devths of our brains as we again say thank you for everything. WATERMAN BAY CITY ° MICHIGAN Dean of Women Dear Reader: Hand in hand with the academic side of college life go the extra-curricular activities of the campus. These activities range from the roverning functions of the Student Council to the party-planning functions of the Social Committee, and they are an important part of a college education. These campus organizations educate the student to work with others, to be better able to enter into the social side of everyday living. Many types of extra-curricular activities are available at Bay City Junior College, and there is sure to be one of special interest to each student. if such a club is not available here, the students go ahead and organize one. This year psychology and journalism groups were added to the list of already-organized clubs. The students will long remember the Sadie Hawkins! Day activities. Many clubs contributed to the success of that day; the Weddin! Breakfast by the Women's League, the Dog Patch dinner by the Social Committee, and the dance in the evening by the Bis Ad Club. The cheering from the basketball games and the swimming meets still rings in their memories. They remember swaying to the dreamy strains of the music at the Lettermen's Autumn Serenade, the Social Committee's Crystal Ball, and Tetra Scits Sweetheart Prom. Besides these big events, chess club meetings, bake sales in the halls, camera club photo sessions, and endless all-college get-togethers made this year's campus life at J-C both profitable and enjoyable. BAY CITY MICHIGAN Dear Reader: Pictured in the following Graauate section are the photographs of the men and women who will receive their diplomas from Bay City Junior College this year of 1953. The diploma symbolizes the completion of their association with Bay City Junior College. The knowledge they gained, the friendships they shared, and the honors they merited curing that association were gained by them individually; the college was not responsible. [It was the facility they used to make them what they are and what they will be. All who entered the college, whether fresh from high school or from an interlude of work, faced the difficulties of adjustment to college life, mastered their difficulties, and leave better prepared to face the future, They used Bay City Junior College as their stepping stone to the future. What the future will bring or where it will lead is unknown. But these men and women shall rely on the training they received here to make them better able to adjust to the problems of the world, We wish them the best in all they do. WATERMAN BAY CITY : MICHIGAN Dean of Women Dear Reader: Featuring three state championships and a near-miss, Bay City dominated the Michigan Junior College Athletic Conference in 1952, Titles were annexed by the track, swimming, and cross-country squads, the last in its first year of competition. The tennis squad was nipped and upset by a point in the state tournament after copping eight straight dual meets in season play, and the golfers won five and lost three dual meets. The basketball squad, in the throes of a rebuilding process, suffered setbacks in seventeen of its nineteen tilts. The 1953 teams faced a stiff reconstruction of their graduation-riddled ranks, but promising freshmen have helped to fill the gap. Brunson Jackson in basketball, Don Carroll in swimming, and Jim Buckley in golf are freshmen stalwarts who have bolstered their squads. After early season reversals, the basketball and swimming teams started winning regularly, and the track team gained strength. The veterans of the golf and tennis squads, almost annihilated by a barrage of diplomas last June, were few and far between with Jack Bindon in golf and Dick Ryan in tennis as nucleii for Three-Sport-Coach Palmer Kern. sincerely, The Staff STANDING, LEFT TO RIGHT: Jack Bratun, manager; Loton Eastman, Royce Ward, Bob Fallis, Brant Short, Dick Easlick, Jim Miller, Brunson Jackson, Coach Paul Grein. In dual meet junior college competition, he was un- defeated in his specialties, the breaststroke and individual medley events. Junior College All-American Freestyler Frank Braman churned monotonously to victories in the freestyle sprint races this year to justify his national rating.
