■——-mh © RUdlBLE 1952 BAY CITY JUNIOR COLLEGE Bay City, Michigan Dedication We wish to dedicate this Crucible to those former students of Bay City Junior College who served their country in the armed forces and especially to those whose sacrifice made it impos¬ sible for them to fulfill the dreams they dreamed or keep the promises they made while here at J.C. To those classmates who fought in battle against the forces which strive to destroy free thinking and democratic education, we dedicate this book in humility and gratitude. 2 Staff Jane Nearing Co-editors Robert Kramp Jacquelyn Seim Carol Chesterfield Diane King Bernard Ulrich Faculty Advisor Miss Grace E. Fetting The Barbara Davis From the nerve center in the offices to the verve center in the tower from the second annex to the west wing, from the classrooms to the labs to the library, there is the pulse of the College. This Crucible, with its hand on that pulse, records it here for you - a record of the past and present for the future. We present — the Crucible of ’52. i ' 3 ADMINISTRATION The administration department of Bay City Junior College - Dean of Women, Miss Lois Waterman; Dean of Men, Palmer Kern; Dean Eric Bradner; and Registrar, Walter Thorsberg - confer in the Dean’s office. Among our most vivid memories of J.C. are those of our teachers-some frightening, some hilarious, some soothing and some even valuable, all are unforgetable. Although the pleasent fellowship found in extra-cur¬ ricular activities are also a part of college, it is the classroom that furnishes the phase of life called education. To this phase the teachers, with baffling logic, simple truths, and of course eccentricities, are indispens¬ able. Without them, acquired knowledge would not necessarily be an education. 5 SCIENCE DEPARTMENT Those students who put in extra hours in lab periods and struggled through their experiments will remember, Seated: Fred Williams, Fred Rogers, Miss Elizabeth Krafka, Miss Ada Royal, Adrian Zwemer, Standing: J. H. George, and Sam Freed. FACULTY MATHEMATICS AND DRAWING DEPARTMENT The engineers, the architects, the county-normal teachers, and the math students can vividly recall the intricate problems associated with the classes of George Pease, Miss Marcia Saile, Miss Meta Ewing, and Walter Thorsberg. • XVi parish’ Fr e , e it eX „ +eri aT11 t 1S H can ec r ' eg or. ° x Y 0 urses. «r£ °‘ wo GladY s sfc- BnMHMH — COUNTY NORMAL DEPARTMENT The county normal certificate holders will all know Miss Grace Fettig and Miss Harriet Van Antwerp, for along with Walter Thorsberg and H. R. Evans they teach the special required courses for the county normal students. FACULTY There are always some teachers whose schedules conflict with that of our photographer, or who are absent on the day the pictures are taken, or who for some reason or other are not in the group pictures. Therefore we are putting in their individual photos so that all of the faculty will be represented in this section. W.A.L. Willard, Sr. Science A. Edward Stiles Social Science Marion L. OFFICE STAFF Whenever a student just had to locate a teacher, to get a last minute notice into the next day bulletin, to have a copy of his credits, or to get help with any of a million and one other odd tasks, Miss Frances Smith, Mrs. Helen Watson, Nan Groulx, and Janet Foehne were always on hand to help him. Activities No education is complete without a touch of extra-curricular activities of which J.C. offers a wide variety. Beside those clubs which are meant for amuse¬ ments as well as for learning, it offers an extensive student government and several classes which by their broad range contribute much to the rest of the student body. These activities were brought into being by the demands of the students. There have been years in which some were dispensed with because of a lack of demand. However, this year two new clubs were called into being-the. Ski Club and the Camera Club. The enthusiasm and social graces as well as the knowledge gained through these activities will always be with the participants. 27 m Social Committee SEATED, LEFT TO RIGHT: Anne Kavanaugh, Diane King, Lucy Schulz, secretary; Merry Crampton, chairman; Mary Heuser, and Marilyn Syring. NOT PRESENT FOR PICTURE: Clarence Nelums, Jim Vayre, Dan Moldovan. 37 GLYNN McARN forward Glynn McArn and Clarence Smokey Nelums teamed up to give the Badgers two of the fastest, shiftiest guards in the conferance. They continually outran their opponents, using the fast-break style of basketball. Their well rounded floor work did much to hold the team together. BOB NEAL guard VARSITY SQUAD BRANT SHORT center Brant Short was the tallest man on the Badgers starting five. Because of his height Brant was left to do almost all the work under the board. As center on the squad he worked throughout each game from beginning to end. Often against taller opponents he used sheer fight to gain control of the ball. 38 CLARENCE Smokie NELUMS forward Jim Vayre plus Bob Neal rounded out the team. These two fine forwards deserve more credit than can be handed them. Being of short stature was a definite setback, but they made up for their lack in height with fighting spirit. The rougher the game the better they showed up. JIM VAYRE guard i Bob Neal and Glynn McArn were J. C. s two steadiest scorers during the basketball season, according to figures released by Coach Paul Grein. Both saw service in nineteen games. They staged a close race for top scoring honors; Bob accounted for Z08 scores for a 10. 9 points per game average, and Glynn racked up Z05 for a 10. 8 goals per game average. J. C. Weather conditions halted the All-Star game between Flint J.C. and Bay City J. C. When the smoke cleared off the tennis courts, Farrel Le Vasseur emerged as champ of the Intra¬ mural Tennis matches. With a terrific backhand he stroked his way to a well deserved victory. FALL SPORTS Jim Vayre (right) and Jack Bindon shared honors as semi-finalists in the fall golf tournament. In ad¬ dition to work and study, the many social activities, sports events, and the thrill of graduation account for pleasant memories that last all through life. But there ' s one person in this picture who is generally overlooked, and it isn’t until the student starts to make his way in the world that he fully appreciates how much his teacher or instructors meant to him. College teachers are mighty important people.
