Text from Pages 1 - 56 of the 1950 volume:

published by The Students of BAY CITY JUNIOR COLLEGE page 4 S ongratulations Miss Ada Elizabeth Hobbs A. B., A. M., has taught English in Junior College since 1931, after several years’ experience in Central High School. She has guided freshmen through the intricacies of textbook essays and expository themes on to the enjoyment of English poetry and Shakespeare in the sopho- more year. Her good taste and enthusiasm for great literature have influenced the young people of Saginaw Valley and surrounding communities for more than twenty years. In addition to her duties as instructor, Miss Hobbs has held the chairmanship of the Liberal Arts Curriculum and has been special adviser to the County Normal students. She is a member of the Board of Directors of the Bay City Teachers Club, representing the Junior College Faculty. In the years of retirement ahead Miss Hobbs plans to spend much of her time in study and travel. Mrs. Florence Presley, assistant librarian, retires this year as director of the Junior College reading room. Under her able supervision students have learned to discipline themselves and to study independently. Mrs. Presley has revealed the rare talent of subordinating herself and of emphasizing books and quiet contemplation as requirements in college education. The Crucible Dr. Eric J. Bradner, who came from California to become the new Dean of Bay City Junior College this year, has won the confidence and admiration of the college personnel, students, and citizens of this area. His guidance has instilled a cooperative and workmanlike attitude at the college. Dr. Bradner feels that the work in the academic field at the college has been well done in the past and that it must be continued along those lines. Moreover, he believes that the college should be a separate institution both in its personnel and in its physical existence. Dr. Bradner also feels that the time is ripe for an expansion into other fields of education. Distributive and terminal courses of ail kinds, general cultural courses, and preparatory courses such as pre-nursing and pre-business will receive greater emphasis. A desire to serve the needs of the community and to further the progress of education has character- ized Dr. Bradner’s work in his first year at the college. We anticipate a continued growth of Bay City Junior College under his capable administration. The Crucible page 3 i a Yytraduction As each year passes, the college campus is the crossing place of many pathways, each occupied by one individual in search of his place in the world. New students arrive to find a part in the day to day life in the college for a time: and then, like others before them, continue along their own road in life. Each year seems like a special year to the students who take part in its wealth of experiences; and we, like all the others, feel that this has been a rather special year at Bay City Junior College. Perhaps this has been a particularly memorable year at our college; there are so many outstanding things to remember. Since that day last September when we hardly knew each other, a lot of names have been learned, so many new friends have been made, and countless associations enjoyed. In all those associations we recall the people we worked with, played with, and relaxed with—faces—old faces and new faces. But as time goes on, memory fades; the faces we haven't seen for a while are difficult to repicture. Perhaps therein lies the value of our book, for this is a book of faces. 5o, when you are at some future point in your pathway through life, you may want to thumb through the pages of this book and look at the people you knew at Bay City Junior College in the year, 1900..... In his first year as helmsman, Coach Ken Norris, piloted the 1949-50 Badger basketball team to a creditable season with a seven won nine lost record. The college cagers played 50-50 ball on the local floor, but dropped five of their eight road encounters. Big guns offensively were Steve Murin and Jerry Reimer, collecting 220 and 178 points respectively. . Prospects for next season appear fair. Norris is assured of at least two and perhaps three of this season's starting five. Jerry Reimer The Crucible junior College's 1949-50 Junior Varsity Squad. C., in a good long time, and because most of the pleasant memories we take with us are wrapped up in the social cfiairs, and other extra curricular activities, by means of a few snapshots we wish to bring back those fun-filled experiences that we had. The first thing we remember .... . ... is the time when the folks from Dogpatch came down, and we shook hands with such fam- ous characters as Daisy Mae, Lil Abner, Mammy and Pappy Yokum, and Marryin’ Sam, and --- all the other guys and gals ,..and we remember that Dayt | Buro that almost tumbled down, but which got the gals some pretty handsome dates for the Skunkhollow Slide... _.. and it seems to us we re- member seeing Hairless Joe, too. Someone said that it was Ralph Hudson, but I don't be- lieve that, do you? Why, he’s too modest... ... Some of the characters be- longed in What's This”. ... My, Bill Wiles had big feet, didn't he? ... Oh, and we mustn't forget to mention all that good cider that flowed through the halls that day. ... Yes sir, that was quite an event, and say, do you re- member.... . . . the Campaign Days at J. C.? When everybody and his brother was running for some kind of office... . .. We sure did have some politicians then, didn't we? ..... Remember how “Boss Stark” battled with J. C.’s Huey Long. There were two weeks of active rabble-rousing. What a show! . .. and we mustn't forget all those faithful workers who tend- ed the polls and counted the ballots... ... Yes, and when it was all over do you remember those five that stood in the victor's circle? No, I don't think anyone could forget all that... butsay... remember all those hand- some couples who paraded at the Crystal Ball? ... and the “Before-dance- get-together-parties?” ... and the day that the Vet's opened the lounge? I guess we were all glad that day, even if the colors of the paint were ai little loud. ... And who can forget that STRANGE WOMAN that Mr. Parks brought to the Cowbell Canter? I wonder who she was ? ? ? ? ... 90ome of us went to the Armistice Day touch-football game in the Stadium. It was cold that day wasn't it? ... and such a big crowd, too. Anyway we won! ... And how about the fun we had looking in the ‘mikes’ im Biology Lhab =: «= ... those silver-tongued ora- tors in Mr. Klingbeil's speech class? Free Enterprise vs. Socialism — Compulsory Health Insur- ance vs. Free Medicine — Should 18 year-olds vote ? ? ... And while they battled, the Woman's League calmly sold candy to passers-by. ... say, do you remember the FIGHTING WILDCATS, who went unbeaten for two seasons? Yes sir, there was a team! Great bunch of guys, those Wildcats. ... And remember the times we “couldn't quite find the right answer’ and got a lite help in library? . . . Sure we remember all those things, don't we. And we'll remember them for a long time to come, ‘cause they were the finest days we ever spent. They were ‘our college days...” ].C.ites WORK AND RELAX page 48 BUSY MAN IN THE BOOK STORE SWEATING OUT THE DEADLINE T-SQUARE TOTERS page 49 Crucible Associate Editor, Shirley Colbert, interviews our foreign students, Alberto Perdomo, of Venezuela, 5.A., Rushdi Mohamed, Jerusalem, Palestine, and Luis Gutierrez, of Columbia, S.A.
