This year Miss Hillegeist's English III classes wrote original poems as a class project. The best of these poems were sent in to the National High School Poetry Association's annual anthology, Young America Singt, and seven were accepted for publication. The poems that were accepted are Desire by Douglas Short, Fishin' by Sydonia Manna, The Promised Land by Linda Simpson, The Train by Regina Evans, Futility', by Fred Hosey, My Beauty by David Graham, and A Friendn by Pauline Caldwell. Desire When you feel that all it lott, Try again at all cott. It't not the winning that meant the mott,' Mayhe you lote, hut come to clote. Work at you will, train at you might, Don't feel had if you lote tonight. Tomorrow it alwayt another day, You can try it again another way. Haue faith in yourtelf, For it't half detire That will alwayt take you higher and higher. Fishin' To a hoy tpring it fine,' That't the time he huntt for pole and line. Sitting in tchool he twittt and tguirmt Thinking of tinkert, hookt, and wormt. Inttead of thinking of hit lettont in clatt He thinkt of catching perch and hatt. When clatt it out and tchool it ouer, He racet home through fieldt of clouer. At latt he't home and not too late To grah a cookie and dig hit hait. He gett all hit gear ready to go And then what happent-hit folkt tay, No, Futility Down through the aget, to tanguine and uiuid, There tcorchet a word which turnt men liuid,' Attyriant, Roman, warriort after and hefore, Have known and feared the holocautt of War. How long will men he hlinded to tuch A horror at War't cadauerout clutch? Were it the caute for dittentiont to ceate, The world would now regale in peace. For, the gallant comhatantt who'ue fought and died, Haue paid the ultimate price with pride, That euen though they falter and fall, They helieue thit War will end them all. The Train I trauel ouer hill and dalef Sometimet I leave a tmoky trail. I trauel through a narrow place, And many milet do I pace. I haue a loud and hooting tong That I do ting the whole day long. It warnt the people in the town That toon I thall he coming 'round. I ttop to drink tome at the tankt And leaue the town with hearty thankt. I go ouer the hridge and 'round the hend To finith my journey to the end. My Beauty Her tmile it one of enchantment. It capturet my very toul, For through thit heauty't radiant tmile Come warmth and kindnett untold. Her hair it like toft ueluet, So pleatant to the touch, But teemt 'tit only fitting For that girl I loue to much. Her eyet are like the tunrite That greett each new-horn day, In that their glowing heauty Could light an army't way. Her featuret are thote of a goddett, A goddett of dayt of yore. With tuch wondrout giftt of heauty, What man could atk for more. A Friend If I could go to many landt Or tail the ocean hlue, I'd neuer find a friend to loue Like the friend I found in you. A friend it one that I can trutt Ana' tell my trouhlet to Who will help me when I need one, And that dear friend it you.
