Even the person who has found happiness and success in following his chosen road must some- times pause and muse: What would have happened if I had followed another road? Educa- tion is a path that leads to this highway, and the direction we take in following the path will determine in a large sense the success and happiness that we find in life. To a Freshman entering high school, this is the beginning of a journey down a new, unex- plored road. The road widens for the Sophomore as he enters his second year in high school and he finds new paths that challenge his interest. By this time, the junior has found that the road has many detours and that shortly he will reach the crossroad where he will seek to determine the direction he must go. The Senior has reached the crossroad and is looking back over four years of work, of sports, and of fun. You to the lefl and I I0 the right, For the wnyf of men mmf sever, And it wel! may be for az day and dl night, Ana' it may be forever. Roads has been chosen as our theme for the 1961 Black Cat annual. We have tried to express it in poetry as well as in pictures. In the days ahead, as you read this edition of The Black Cat would you not ponder on the road you have taken and think about the road you have traveled in Bay City High School? THE STAFF MR. H. J. MCALLISTER Superintendent of Bay City Independent School District CS uperzkzfezz 0612103 ffvfofofress Dear Students: As you turn the pages of this Black Cat Annual in the future years, I hope you will recall many pleasant roads you traveled in the 1960-61 school year. To you who have been in Bay City High School for the past four years the roads have been long, but I am sure as you look back you will say they were happy and profitable roads. May the roads you pursue, either in the educational or vocational field, be happy and prosperous ones. As you travel your roads in future life, remember the saying: Nothing ventured, nothing gained. Remember also that faith without works is dead. And that he who asks, receives, and he who seeks, finds, and to him that knocks, the door is opened. So keep at it, until you find the instruction you need, you have made a fine beginning, do not stop, continue your education. Sincerely, H. J. McAllister jjrzlvz czyoafs CYJQGQQSS To the Students and Faculty: I am most happy to have an opportunity to recognize our annual staff for the 1961 edition of the Black Cat. Congratulations to you for a job well done. This edition of the Black Cat will be cher- ished by every student and faculty member in years to come. It will serve as an excursion into the past, reminding you of many pleasant memories of yesterday. Yet-in reality it should serve to challenge, inspire, and sustain you in your conquest of tomorrow. Each section of your yearbook repre- sents a nucleus around which have been built the individual and group student experiences in your scholastic, social, and spiritual realm. Each page will give you greater confidence in yourself and in your ability to cope with life. It will help you to become more aware of the dangers that threaten our American way of life, our public schools, and all rights of a free people. Yes-our yearbook is one example of the ability of our American youth to create, plan, and carry out those plans objectively. Each time that you look at your yearbook, may it be a constant reminder that if American boys and girls are to continue to have the same privileges that you have enjoyed, we must ever be alert to the threats of Communism and other forces that seek to destroy the very principles on which our nation was founded. My sincere appreciation and thanks go to the sponsor and staff for the 1961 edition of the Black Cat Annual. R. H. Renfro, Principal MR. R. H. The best of these poems were sent in to the National High School Poetry Association's annual anthology, Young America Singt, and seven were accepted for publication. The poems that were accepted are Desire by Douglas Short, Fishin' by Sydonia Manna, The Promised Land by Linda Simpson, The Train by Regina Evans, Futility', by Fred Hosey, My Beauty by David Graham, and A Friendn by Pauline Caldwell. Desire When you feel that all it lott, Try again at all cott. It't not the winning that meant the mott,' Mayhe you lote, hut come to clote. Work at you will, train at you might, Don't feel had if you lote tonight. Tomorrow it alwayt another day, You can try it again another way. For, the gallant comhatantt who'ue fought and died, Haue paid the ultimate price with pride, That euen though they falter and fall, They helieue thit War will end them all. The Train I trauel ouer hill and dalef Sometimet I leave a tmoky trail. I trauel through a narrow place, And many milet do I pace. I haue a loud and hooting tong That I do ting the whole day long. It warnt the people in the town That toon I thall he coming 'round. I ttop to drink tome at the tankt And leaue the town with hearty thankt. I go ouer the hridge and 'round the hend To finith my journey to the end. My Beauty Her tmile it one of enchantment. It capturet my very toul, For through thit heauty't radiant tmile Come warmth and kindnett untold. Her hair it like toft ueluet, So pleatant to the touch, But teemt 'tit only fitting For that girl I loue to much. The purpose of Grammar I is to improve communication skills. Particular attention is-given to correct forms of parts of speech used in sentences. In Grammar II much time is devoted to verbals and dependent clauses. Reading, writing and spelling are continued. By the time a student reaches his junior year he should have a good foundation of the essentials of sentence structure. So Grammar III is a detailed review of all such elements of sentence analysis. Exciting Yer Unusual Yer Good Very Friday and Saturday night of February the 24th and 25th students of Bay City High School presented the Black Cat Varieties of 1961. The show was spon- sored by the senior class and proceeds from the show helped the seniors in making their yearly trip. Members of the faculty also took part in the show. It was really a surprise to find out that Mrs. Brown and Coach Maglitto were not really angry with each other but did a very good job in making the audience thir1k so. The presentation of the Black Cat Varieties showed that there is an exciting array of talent in Bay City high school. Mr. R. H. Renfro, principal, was pro- ducer-director of the show. The Madhatters The Director thanks the Seniors for his gift C560 fl! The cast of over 250 people, which included mem- bers from each class in high school, performed for capacity crowds for two nights. The standing room only sign was achieved by this tremendous turn out. Thirteen main events and skits between acts were emceed by Margaret Knebel, Sid McMillan and Billy Freeman. Comedy skits and colorful songs presented scenes from the past. The costumes worn in the series of dances were impressive as well as beautiful. Behind huge bow ties and greasepaint, members of the famous Black Cat football team were featured in the minstrel show. The backstage crew and the make-up, wardrobe and properties groups contributed much to the success of the show. The complete success of the show may be attributed to hard work, long rehearsal hours, and full co-operation of the entire Cast of performers.
