In looking back over the years we cannot help but give honor to the town that has Contributed to the growth of our school and the education program of the State of Texas. We, therefore, feel that by pausing a moment to glance about us here in our own community we may develop a greater appreciation and a deeper understand- ing of the beauty and richness which surround us in this nation of our Birth. Our town, and our county, often known as the Cradle of Texas History has run the gamut of time, beginning in 1685 when LaSalle founded Fort St. Louis on Matagorda Bay. Bay City, 25 miles from the Bay, is located on Bay Prairie, from which it takes its name. With an elevation of 52 feet, unexcelled water, and cool Gulf breezes the year around, public schools affiliated with all Universities, churches of every denomination, free public library, municipal water system, swimming pool, and railway facilities, Bay City is attracting citizenship which is now over 12,000. THE STAFF Decliccztion We respectfully dedicate this 1954 edition of the Black Cat to our beloved Principal, Mr. E. J. Myers. Through his interest in our school and citizenship in our com- munity, he has become an outstanding personage and example to all of us. He is never too busy to help us with our problems, never too busy to talk to us and never too busy to do something for Bay City High. Building 5 d atioml growth of Bay City had its i Thc story of thc 6 uc i beginning with thc founding of Matagorda County. It is the stuff from which come competent parents and substantial citizens. It teaches one to not only live with himself but with others. Our education for Democracy is a necessity for peace throughout the world. You are progressing toward your place in the community. There is not a moment without some duty. You should consistently do your best to perform that duty, True happiness is the result of an enthusiastic performance of your duty. You can and must decide your destiny. Plant things in your mind which will later bear fruits of under- standing and good-will. If you have faith in things unseen, it will give you strength and force in your conviction. Grow not weary in well-doing for whatever you sow, you will surely reap. The amount of happiness and success that you obtain will depend upon you. There will be failures, but your greatest glory will be how well you may arise from your fail- ures. He who makes no mistakes does nothingg he who makes too many mistakes loses his job. So I entreat you to do your best. H JWMM7' JOHN H. Hickfang came to Bay City High School as the new director. Performances before Christmas included concerts for the junior and senior high schools, the annual Winter Concerts, and a trip to Houston as one of the selected choirs for demonstration in the University of Houston Choral Workshop. After the holidays, the events and appearances of the A Cappella Choir were many and impressive. The first of two tours included concert appearances in Galena Park, Green's Bayou, Houston, and a festival appearance in Conroe. Mr. Neil Kjos, national- ly known composer, arranger, and critic was very impressed by the Bay City Choir and was complimentary of the poised and dignified appearance of it. In March, the Choir launched a successful series of thirty minute radio programs once a week on Radio Station KIOX. Another tour was made taking the choir to central Texas for an appearance at the University of Texas, and other concert appearances in and around Austin and Bryan. The Choir did not make a contest appearance this year because of the many other events that were scheduled the same week. The Girls' Chorus made appearances locally in concert, on the radio, and on assembly programs. This group entered the University Interscholastic League Music Contest at the U of H, April 13, and received an excellent rating. The judges were very impressed by the maturity of tone for such a young group. The Choristers, a group of 30 students, was organized this year and selected from the membership of the A Cappella Choir. l : I 'R 3 l a ' Y. -, f ail -,,wffG.-... -......,.,........,-.,.- W HOOL -. At that time many of the members took both Latin and Spanish since there were not many electives, so the membership in both clubs overlapped. The organizations were much alike and had programs very similar. About 1957 the two sponsors, Mrs. Ingram and Mrs. Early, with the approval and consent of the superintendent, Mr. Hutchenson, combined the clubs into a Foreign Language Club. We had a program celebrating the union-the wedding of the Spanish and Latin Clubs which was very clever. The Latin Club pin was a Roman scroll, and the Spanish Club pin, a dagger. We put the dagger through the scroll and had the pin for the newly organized club. The club has always been a social rather than a service club. The Foreign Language Club meets once a month and has a variety of programs. They have a large social function once a year for the entire student body. iw . ni .G . . All of the slaves that are sold are members of the Foreign Language Club and are presently taking Spanish or Latin. The pictures on this page were all taken during this event. In the first picture Miss Carmen Fikes poses for a picture as she is sold to the highest bidder. In the second picture these handsome young gentlemen are waiting to be put up on the selling block. After the sale the students went to class dressed in their various costumes. Charles Shoultz is a perfect example. The action took place on the stage and in the auditorium, during rehearsal and after the per- formance. Among the myriad comic obstacles with which poor young Miss Burgess was faced fit was her first playj are: a grouchy janitor with a sharp tongue, the disappear- ance of the play books the first day of rehearsal, a set of comically crossed up high school romances with a capital Rf a charming young heroine, her disgruntled athlete, a professional actress with advice, a banker's daughter driven to theft by dirty tricks of her father's ambition . . . and then a romance for young Miss Burgess herself. Presented the eleventh and twelfth of March, this three act comedy was directed by Miss Marjorie Farmer. This is one of the many amusing and hilarious scenes from Cur- laizz Going Up.
