Meek Bruce Sweet Dr. Harvey Bogan 4 Paul Stoskopf, Vice-President LeRoy Roberts It is traditional to have a school board and the six members of our Board of Education are citizens of this community who are interested in the schools of Baxter Springs. It is their responsibility to wisely select needed equipment for the various departments of the schools, and develop new and better departments when needed. These members are deeply interested in education, for that is their main purpose--to promote the expansion of learn- ing. The greatest impact of their work can be seen in their action. They not only suggest what should be done, but see that it is done. The citizens of Baxter Springs, with the aid of the Board of Edu- cation, are helping to Widen the educational pro- gram in our schools. 5 I Helen Childress, President ew!-7. BAXTER VS. COLLEGE HIGH 33 - 6 The Lions met the Comets, the conference's perennial cellar team, and played a poor first half showing little spirit. A rousing pep-talk by Coach Wilson fired the lions up and they went on to trounce the Comets. BAXTER VS. SOUTHEAST 19 - 20 The Lions journeyed to Southeast expecting an easy victory, but were disappointed when the Lancers scored several times with apparent ease and the Lions could not quite find the spirit they had shown earlier in the season BAXTER VS. ARMA 20 - 7 The Lion's offensive unit ground out three touchdowns against the Bulldogs and the defensive unit held them to only one tally, giving the Lions their third conference victory. BAXTER VS. RIVERTON 14 - O Baxter made a repeat performance of last year's upset this year defeating the better-rated Ramblers. The Lions, as usual, found more fire and spirit against the Ramblers than the other teams they faced. The defensive unit played very well holding the Riverton offense to 16 yards. BAXTER VS. QUAPAW 26 - 46 Quapaw came to Baxter prepared to play a different brand of football than the Lions were accustomed to and left the Lions defeated and much the worse for wear and tear. BAXTER VS. GIRARD O - 6 Baxter and Girard met in a hard, but clean-fought contest. The Lions were riddled with injuries from their encounter with Quapaw and could not find the power to punch the ball over the goal line although they were close several times. J ' High School Under the direction of Mr. Robert Higgins, the thirty-six meme bers of the junior High Band participated in three Christmas parades. The first, of course, was at Baxter Springs, then the Columbus and Chetopa parades. They also attended the annual Music Festival at Riverton. The druni majorctte was Carolyn Fay l 107 Jwaw I-lfglu Gals Mwsw The girls receive the same instruction as the boys. Both groups are also aided in their music appreciation by listening to records of the great composers and learning to dis- tinguish the different styles of music. In addition both groups go to Riverton annually for the Mo-Kan junior High School Music Festival. Here they learn to sing together as a large group when they are singing with the groups from other schools . With this they have also learned to cooperate with a director with Whom they were not familiar. 108 J ' I-liglv E055 Musto Under the guidance of Mrs. Higgins, these boys receive a good basic education in music. They are given some music theory including the note values, the meaning and use of Sharps and flats, and how to tell what key a selection of music is in. They also become familiar with some of the well-known musicians through their study of music history. After their two years in junior High School they know the periods of music history and at least one composer from each period. SPONSORS MILO CHEW DRUG COMPANY, INC.
