DEDICATION EUGENE KIBEL The senior class of 1956 dedicates the 1956 jayhawker, jr. to the memory of Eugene Kibel. Eugene was a member of the senior class of 1956 when he died in October, 1955. He will always be remembered for the smile that he had for everyone whom he met in the halls, the quiet way that he per- formed any task that he was asked to do, and the gentlemanly manner that he possessed at all times. The senior class entered their last year of high school life with sixty-four members. Under the guidance of their sponsors, Mrs. Gilmore, Mr. Hughes, and Mr. Burke, they chose as their leaders jack Shadwick, President, DJ. Chambers, Vice President, Norma Price, Secretary, and Marvin Harper, Treasurer. The Football Queen, Miss Judy Creger, and the Annual Queen, Miss Norma Price, were chosen from the class. The seniors sold concessions at all football and basketball games and during the noon hour. They also increased their funds by selling magazines and light bulbs. These pro- ceeds were used to finance the senior trip. They presented a three-act play in the.spring. They elected as officers Sam Weaver, President, Kenny Ingram, Vice President, Nancy Irwin, Secretary, and Rosemary Bequette, Treasurer. Their sponsors were Miss Thomas, Mr. Barone, and Mrs. George. Soon after the opening of school the class chose their rings and sold basketball pencils. The annual junior play, 'She Forgot to Remember, was a great success. One of the highlights of the year was the junior-Senior Banquet given in honor of the seniors. The class chose as their Annual Queen candidate Miss Jeanette Campbell and as their Football Queen candidate Miss Nancy Irwin. Lammers, B. Gardner. Sam, jack, D. J., and jim. The Key Club is a junior form of the Kiwanis International. The club was organized in 1948. The motto of the club is 'We Build. The Kiwanis Club of Baxter Springs is assisted with its minstrel by the Key Club. The Key Club gave a Thanksgiving basket to a needy family. To obtain money, the club sold jelly for Christmas gifts, sold garbage cans, and sponsored a basketball game. The big social function for the year was a New Year's Dance at the Golf Club. Our Key Club was well represented at the state convention that was held in Hutchinson, Kansas. Officers for the year were jim Goodwin, President, Sam Weaver, Vice President, D. J. Chambers, Secretary, and jack Shadwick, Treasurer. Board of Directors were Bruce Lammers, Bob Spence, Gary Weaver and the club officers. Mr. Keith and Mr. Nichols were the school sponsors. Rev. Mark Rouch was the Kiwanis sponsor. -j6.. The Kayettes is a club which is affiliated with the ansas Association for Youth. They sponsor both com- inity and world service projects. These include Christmas Lskets for an adopted family. 'Meals for Millions' at lanksgiving, Christmas and Easter. The main purpose of the Pep Club is to support the teams and to supply pep and enthusiasm for the football, basketball, and track events. There were eighty-nine members this year. Some of the activities were initiation of new members, decora- ting for the homecoming dance, selling mums for the homecoming game, and participating in the half time activity of the homecom- ing game. They always provided the flag ceremony for both football and basketball home games. They had their annual slumber patty which is always a very entertaining event. Coach Drake had able assistance from backfield coach Karl Ebel who had his first year at Baxter lligh this year. This caused them to lose the majority of their games al- though the boys were hard- working and played some good basketball. This situation has its bright side too. The only losses were to the undefeated Joplin squad. A four man team won second in the Kansas State Sand Green Tournament. Battling individually for state medalist, Thomas tied for sixth place, Child- ress tied for eighth place, and Berry tied for seventeenth place. Baxter hopes for a successful 1956 season as all four boys that entered the state tournament in 1955 are returning for the 1956 season. Mr. Drake is the coach. In a dual track meet with Pittsburg High, Baxter took the running events 47 to 31 but lost the field events 12M to 412 to lose the meet by a score of 59M to 72Z. Baxter entered the Ottawa Relays and the K.U.
