Dick Fifzgerald 12 Senior Class History It was in the fall of 1949 that twenty-one green faced freshmen marched up the stairs to Baxter High School to seek the knowledge which would entitle them to a sheet of paper called a diploma . The first big problem to all the freshmen was the seniors who came up with the big idea of initiation. The initiation was held in the gym with the high school as witnesses. Emily Miller dropped from our roll during the year, but Beverly Herold and Francis Castor entered. Our class sponsor was Mr. l'larlin Stenberg this year. Under the direction of Nr. L. M. Leeper, we presented the one-act play, 'Everything Off . Fall rolled around again, this time finding us bright faced high school sophomores rather than Greenies . Mr. Jewel Dusheck was our class sponsor. During the year, Beverly Herold withdrew from the class roll, but our class became the largest it had ever been when Richard and Robert Fitzgerald, and Ronald Childs entered. Our class play this year was entitled, 'Ten Per Cent Tommy . Mr. Leeper directed the one-act play. . When we became iuniors, we felt we were getting closer to the sheet of paper as we were past the half-way mark in our high school careers. This year the faces of Francis Castor, Sally Gearhart and Ronald Childs were not among us, but Martha Huffaker entered at the beginning of the second semester. Mrs. Nargaret MclVeekin was our class sponsor, and she worked faithfully and hard with us to make our Junior-Senior Banquet a success. Our banquet held in honor of the Class of '52 was held at Younkers Tea Room in Des Moines with dancing following the meal at the Tromar Ballroom. As our banquet was formal, it was a very colorful affair. The theme, The Wishing Well' was carried out. Mr. L. M. Leeper worked many hours with us to make our class play, Great Caesar's Ghost , the outstanding production it was. lt was a mystery in three acts. bbw, as we are seniors, perhaps time is going too fast for some and not fast enough for others. Of the twenty-One who started to high school in 1949, seventeen are still with us. However, we have a graduating class of twenty-one. This year, Betty Vansice withdrew from the class, but Egon Rebmann, German Exchange Student, entered. We held a pancake supper which was in charge of our class sponsor, M. Leeper. The purpose of this was to earn money for our annuals. Our senior play has been chosen. It is entitled, 'Finders Creepers . We are planning for skip day, Baccalaureate, Commencement and most are planning for a diploma. We, the Seniors of '53, will long remember our cherished high school days in good 'ol Baxter High. Sponsored by GEORGE GEISE Insurance - Real Estate - Notary 13 Senior Prophecy My, my haw time fliesl Here it is 1970 and the Junior Class of 1953 is holding its annual reunion at Des Moines. Soon our conversation turned to the activities of our schoolmates who composed the Senior Class of 1953. It was reported that several of our friends have found fame and fortune in the field of television. Jean Mae Butler is appearing as the smallest opera singer an T.V. She has changed her name to Cornelis Beanpale. Billy Kielly has also became famous on T.V. as a midget wrestler and is married to Jean Moe Butler. Martha Bucklin is billed as the fat lady in Super Circus . We hear that she weighs 450 pounds. Elna Mae Damman is married to Darrel De .long and is naw supporting her fifteen children since he left here. Shirley Eddy has entered a Convent. Being despondent over a love affair she decided to became a nun. Raymond Bucklin is one of the most prosperous of the class. We find that he has become president af the Bank of America. Bob Fitzgerald has become a very famous chiropodist. For those who don't understand the work, he is a corn and wart doctor. We find poor Darrel De Jong banging his head against a wall in his padded cell at Mr. Pleasant. We really don't think it's all Elna Mae's fault. Egan Rebmann has came back to America as German Ambassador. While Egan is here in America, Mr. Scovel has taken advantage of this fact and is living in Egan 's castle in Germany while writing his dactor's thesis in history. We were all happy and proud to find that the first woman President, Loretta Petermeier came from our own home town. We certainly hope she stays in office for at least four terms. Howard Sloan is also a well-known politician and is acting as Laretta's campaign manager. They are members of the Whig party. We are surprised ta learn that Sandra Reynolds has joined Joey Chitwood's Hell Drivers. M10 ever thought that shy, little Sandra would become a dare-devil from driving that '29 Pontiac around Baxter. Larry Kiser has accepted Eisenhower's old iob as president af Columbia University. Who knows he may became President of the United States someday. .lerry I.oupee is a Playboy in New York, spending all his money he made gambling at the Night Spots in Baxter. Joanne Allan is in deepest Africa living with a tribe of pygmies. She left for Africa to get away from it all after a sad love affair. Burton Butler has just won the award of Driver of the Year for his safe and careful driving especially dawn the baulevards of Baxter. Sponsored by HOLZAPHEL'S MEAT MARKET 14 Doris Patterson has become quite famous for her speeches on 'Women 's Superiority to Man , how- ever life as an old maid must be dull and dreary. As soon as Ronnie Hill graduated he left immediately for New York where he married. l'le soon sailed for Hawaii where he now spends most of his time on the beach with beautiful girls dancing around him while he strums his guitar. Dick Fitzgerald is now the world's greatest inventor and has just erected a rocket ship that will be leaving for the moon next week. Good Luck, Dick. While Dwaine Flora was giving his magnificent performance in one of the school plays he was spotted by one of M-G-M's movie scouts, and is now famous in the movies. His next picture will be Kermit, the Hermit . We found that Professor Perry had ordered one of his students, Vicki Randolph, to apologize to him for one of her pranks or drop his course. When Vicki comes to apologize, she overhears that Professor Perry has been offered a deanship--under one condition--that he can get a wife. Professor Perry had three girls on his hands that were more than willing to elope with him. His family and John, his friend, tried to help him select his wife by each choosing a candidate. When each girl appears, ready to elope with Professor Perry, they had a surprise in store for them when John comes in dressed as Perry's long-lost wife. Through all this mix-up, Professor Perry selects Vicki as the one he truly loves and asks her to become his bride. Hercules Nelson and his bosom pal, Wilbur Maxwell, went to spend the weekend with Aunt Mary and Uncle Bob Nelson, not knowing until they reached their destination that Uncle Bob was an undertaker. Another guest in the mortuary was old Jason Quigley who had run out of gas . Wilbur and Hercules were both for going home, but Wilbur spied Herc's cousin, Celeste, so he decided to stay. The boys were in for some thrills and chills when Mr. Quigley gallivanted around in the most uncorpus fashion, reading the newspaper and even climbing in bed with Hercules and Wilbur. Of course, Mr. Quigley really wasn't dead. He had planned to make his family think he was dead, then show up at his own funeral and trap the guilty person, who had tried to poison him. After Hercules and Wilbur got things in a mess and Uncle Bob ut into prison, the mystery is finally solved by little Frankie lalthough the boys got credit for itll, who had it all figured out that Dr. Brown was the guilty party, who had tried to poison Mr. Quigley. The goal posts were decorated in the school colors of black and orange, and Lynnville's colors, purple and yellow. For the dance, a large football was hung in the gym with streamers extending in all directions. During the half of the football game, the captain, Howard Sloan, crowned the Oueen of the Homecoming, Elna Mae Damman. A ceremony was performed in which the marching band made the form ofa crown and the queen and her attend ants, Juanita Meier, Marjorie Krampe, Bonnie Jo Orr, and Sandra Reynolds rose to the queen's platform in a convertible. Cindy Gordon was crown bearer. After the game, a Homecoming dance was held with Stan Freeman 's orchestra I . DR. M. T. GORDON OSTEOPATHIC-PHYSICIAN AND SURGEON 42 gig awk? I X, A 1 Cheedeaders L Football Striving to attain that goal of perfection vital to all successful athletic teams, the Baxter High School boys formed a determined and spirited gridiron squad. This past season witnessed the Bulldog's first victory since the addition of six-man football to the school cirriculum. The comple- tion of our own athletic field supplied the needed pride and school spirit to put them on the road to success resulting in three hard-fought victories. One of the high spots of the season was the first Homecoming sponsored by Baxter High School. The game played with Lynnville resulted in a victory for the home team. The team will lose much power through the graduation of seniors, however prospects for a winning season next year are bright. Basketball The 1952-53 Baxter cage squad, captained by Jerry Loupee didn 't win any tournament honors but they did win high praise from Baxter bcsketball fans. The Baxter cagers competed in the Rock Lake conference that included the top teams of this region and won fifty per cent of their games. The Baxter boys could be depended upon to pre- sent the fans with a thrilling game except for a brief period during the flu epidemic. Although the backbone of the team is graduating, there is a large field of spirited but inex- perienced underclassmen to be developed. Baseball Baseball season opened March 23 with 25 boys reporting for practice. Ten letter winner's were on hand to make up the nucleus of the team along with many other promising players. With weather in our favor, we hope to have a very enjoyable season.
