She was named in honor of Cpl. Lewis K. Bausell, USMC, who was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor during World War II. BAUSELL was commissioned on Feb. 7, 1946 at the U.S. Naval Shipyard, Boston, Mass., and reported to the Pacific Fleet. Her first full-fledged exercise came in February 1947. BAUSELL had already completed two Far East cruises when the Korean Conflict began. After the Korean War, BAUSELL made eight cruises to the Western Pacific, participating in various operations with the Seventh Fleet, the Japanese Navy, and the Chinese National Navy. In July 1960, BAUSELL commenced a 12 month rehabilitation and modernization period at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard, Bremerton, Wash. This program, known as FRAM MK I, was de- signed to equip destroyers with the latest in modern technology. As a result of this moderni- zation, BAUSELL was equipped with the most modern armament, including ASROC, a rocket capable of delivering a homing torpedo or depth charge to a submerged target many miles away. In November 1962, BAUSELL began her eleventh cruise to the OrientfFar East. Operations with Fast Carrier Attack Forces were interrupted by a good-will visit to Singapore, Djark- arta, Indonesia, and Darwin, Australia as a flagship for Destroyer Squadron FIVE. In August 1964, BAUSELL began her twelfth cruise to the Western Pacific where her crew qualified to wear the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal Wietnamj , and in January 1966, she deployed again where the crew earned the Vietnamese Service Medal. During the winter of 1966, BAUSELL updated her FRAM installation during a four month over- haul period at San Francisco Bay Naval Shipyard, Mare Island Division at Vallejo, California. BAUSELL joined the Seventh Fleet again in June 1967, and steamed with Task Force 77 Fast Carrier Striking Forces. During this deployment BAUSELL participated in Sea Dragon op- g erations inflicting damage on coastal targets and water borne logistic craft along the coast of North Vietnam. In September 1968, BAUSELL began her fifteenth deployment to the Western Pacific. During this deployment she participated in every type of operation available to Seventh Fleet de- I stroyers, including operations with the Carrier Strike Force, Sea Dragon Operations, Search and Rescue QSARJ , and Naval Gunfire Support, without missing a single commitment. BAUSELL returned to San Diego in March 1969. Williams, CSC Engard, RMC Pangier, EMC SIXRESQFIEIMC A Chiefs W 45 1 LT Iron Mike McKearn Engineering Department It is common knowledge throughout the Pa- cific Destroyer Fleet that engineering ex- cellence or material readiness and BAU- SELL are synonomous terms. The hard work and constant vigilance of machinists mates, enginemen, machinery repairmen, boilermen, electricians mates, interior communications electricians, shipfitters, and damage controlmen makes up the tight knit unit that enables our ship to meet its commitments anywhere on the oceans of the world. The trials of this cruise called on us for everything from plane guarding at 27 knots with constant maneuvering to slow speeds along the coast of Vietnam. We began this cruise with the engineering E Award for excellence and LT Mc- Kearn, the engineering department head, made a promise to himself. This was to attain: a. No water hours. b. No casual- ty reports tunable to repair with ship's forcel. c. 27 knots and no smoke. d. Maximum liberty for his men. Through the cooperation of the crew and his able administration of the engineering depart- ment, he was able to attain these ends. His knowledge of plant operations and his broad understanding of engineering prob- lems made this cruise one of the most efficient in BAUSELL's history.
