Miss Garnett Hyde ,f f ...ofeaminqlogcfzoal Can you remember those long cold rides to schools? Here - this may bring back a few memo- ries. As you get on the bus, you are greeted by a friendly, Good Morning, from your bus driver. You take a seat somewhere, trying to get as close as possible to the heater, but, alas, you can't so you sit with some friends and begin to chat about the usual topics of school, weather, school activities, or perhaps about something that happened over the week end. After a short, or at least what seemed like a short while, you arrive at the door of the school, ready and anxious to begin another day of school activities. The bus drivers are: Otto Erhet, Ed Hoover, Sr., Ed Hoover, Jr., Dale Cook, Dale Word, Eldon Herrli, George Sherp, Harold Sherp, Herman Wenger, and John Secor. 3 fi if As we reach the doors to enter the building, we find that some students coming up the stairs are quite enthusiastic about starting the new day. Some are filled with wonder as to what the new day might bring, and some are hating themselves for staying up so late the night before. But we are all ready to start a new day filled to the brim with hard study, many activities, and fun with our friends. As the years pass by, we will surely re- member the good times and the many friends which we acquired. What a familiar sight. The poor ticket seller is being mobbed by students anxious to get their meal tickets for the day. Without them, the tokens, we would surely die of starvation when noon time rolls around. The girls that work so hard selling these meal tickets in the morning are Nancy Sheets, Kate Wil- ley, and Becky Bemiller. At noon, for those who forget to get their tickets in the morning, Carolyn England and Vicki Davis are on duty in the hall. As time goes on, we're sure to remember this. - - Q W V MM RMA sql V, 1- x How well we remember this - the 8:20 rush for classes! Before long, this wonderful feeling will be over for many of us. But there will always be more to come. Many will be back next year for more fun and laughter. There will always be incidents that stand out in the minds of our school days. We're Sure that the 8:20 rush will be one of them. This is the only place in Jimtown where it is possible to get a well balanced, hot meal for the outstanding price of twenty-five cents a day. Mrs. BeMilIer and Mrs. Molebash, the cooks, pre- pare meals each day for an average of 350 stud- ents. ln order to rush the waiting line through, Mrs. Johnson, Mrs. Shigley, Mrs. Moore, and Mrs. Stickel help the cooks serve the meals. The iuniors and seniors have their noon hour from 11:30 to 12:00 and the freshman and sophomore classes are served their meals from 12:00 to 12:30. This is the time of day we wait for, a time set aside to gather with our friends to gossip and eat our meals in the friendly atmosphere of the school cafeteria. ...Gyn ' Through the Student Council's efforts, we have enioyed many assembly programs ranging from muscle men to a wonderful Negro quartet. Among the programs we have had were: Mr. America of 1948, movies on the Ohio State Peni- tentiary, a Negro quartet, and many religious pro- grams in accordance with certain seasons of the year. We're sure that all the students wish to ioin us in giving G big thanks to the Student Council for fheir great work. 1 'tk 55' 1 -5i2.'.wf ...agelmw H' lnitiation Day was indeed o marvelous day for not only the freshmen and sophomores but the iun' iors and seniors as well. The freshmen remember this as the day when they were initiated into high school. After this day they were no longer green freshmen. For the sophomores this is a glorious day. They now can make the freshmen bow down to them and hear them declare that the sophomores are their lords and masters. Even the iuniors and seniors enioyed this day. It reminded them of the great time they had initiat- ing other classes. 'Wang The calm and quiet of the school is broken on days when there is a ball game. The students gath- er in the gym to arouse school spirit and enthusiasm for the big game. These pep sessions are made up of everything from speeches by the teachers to skits put on by the students. There is also a lot of yelling to back up the cheerleaders. The last thing usually done before the students are dismissed is singing the school song. This is enthusiastically sang by every member of the stud- ent body. With the rafters still ringing, the stud- ents are dismissed, all fired up for the big game. 11 Me - Samoa Paam 355 May 17 1957 and May IO T958 are sure to stand out un the mmds of all lunnors and sensors of those years These are the dates for the long awaited lumor and senior prom and banquet In ourlumor year we were pnvneged to gwe a banquet and prom rn honor of the senuors of that year How marvelous rt was The entlre week before you could hear the buzzing around school of what the gurls were gomg to wear and how much the boys had to pay forthen whne dnnerlacket Fmally the bug nlght arrlved Everybody all dressed up In their formal attxre went to the Hotel HkhaH After the banquet there was danclng untll 1200 These mghts wlll always stand out ln everybodys mmd as the most memorable nught of their lumol and semor year 3' lf N-,n 7 I 1' 1 1 T ' ,s 2 Fo rf tv , . After almost every game, some class sponsors a sock hop. Along with the advisor of the yearbook, Miss Hyde, they at- tended meetings at the Hotel Oliver in South Bend to learn about the work of a yearbook. After thinking about the yearbook all summer, Janice, Gary, Miss Hyde, and Mr. Knepp selected the remainder of the staff. ln October the staff went back to the Hotel Oliver for more lectures. On November 3 and 4 the senior class got out of school to sell ads for the yearbook. Although they spent two tiring days selling, they were well rewarded for their efforts. Later, when the dummy was finished, the staff wrote stories and identified pictures of the other school mates. Months later, and after long hours of work and endless patience, the 1958 School Bell Echoes was published. 4 :Q 'Il ' A -.vg - , . .7 3 N FRONT ROW Suzanne Schrock Joyce Simmons, June Barrett, Barbara Deal, Judy Dils, 5l 0 0f1 Be'k9Y Larry Struble Gary Fry Gary Secor. Nancy has been a very active person, both in her academic and extracurricular life. English, his- tory, and home economics are the subjects Nancy majored in. She also has a minor in mathematics. Speech and composition have been Nancy's favorite subjects, not because they were the easiest by any means, but because she learned many things that will be of help in her college life. In connection with her speech class, Nancy entered the Voice of Dem- ocracy contest of which she was the local winner. Not only has Nancy taken school very seriously and worked at it very hard, but she has also been very active in many clubs and organizations. She has been a member of the Future Homemakers of America for the past three years. She served as president of that club this year, and was vice- president last year. Also a member of the Girls' Athletic Association for the past three years, Nancy served as treasurer in her sophomore year. She also played on the basketball team in her sophomore and junior year. As a member of 4-H for the past eight years, Nancy served as secretary during the summer of her freshman year. Being a very energetic girl, Nancy has been varsity football and basketball cheerleader for two years. This has been a big job as well as a great honor because there are many hours of hard practice. Nancy has also spent much time and energy serving on the yearbook and school paper staff. Serving as class secretary has also kept Nancy busy. Her duties include keeping a record of class meetings and who paid their dues, and also report- ing the minutes at each class meeting. This has been a big job, and Nancy has fulfilled her duties well. School has meant many things to Nancy. Most of all, she feels it has given her a good background which will help her in her college work. Jlanaag G.A.A. president, F.H.A. secretary, editor of the year book, class treasurer, and winner of the D.A.R. Award, all these sum up Janice Kern, the salutatorian of the senior class. During her four years of high school, Janice has studied on a commercial course. Her majors include history, English, home economics, and business edu- cation. Sociology, a subject dealing with people and their behavior, is Janice's favorite course because she finds it very interesting. Janice, being a very active girl, participates in many extra curricular activities. Throughout high school she has been a member of the Girls' Athletic Association. During her freshman year she was treasurer and for the past two years has been president. As a member of G.A.A. she played on the girls' basketball team and also belonged to the girls' bowling team. Janice also is a member of the Future Home- makers of America club. She has been a member for the past two years and now holds tlfe office of secretary. As treasurer of the senior class, Janice has the job of depositing all class money and making reports to the class. Besides attending club meetings, much of Janice's time is spent on the year book. As editor she must plan the yearbook and carry much of the responsi- bility for its completion. She -also is a member of the school paper staff. This year Janice was the recipient of the D.A.R. Award. lt was based on dependability, honesty, and good citizenship. School has meant many things to Janice. Most of all she is thankful for the opportunity for a good education which will enable her to face the world with better understanding. One hundred and eleven students in the freshman class this year, that's the largest yet, was the exclamation that went up from the faculty. The freshmen elected Mr. Michaels as their sponsor. The biggest event that comes to all freshmen is that of initiation, given by the sophomore class. In this big event the boys were requested to dress like girls with hose, lipstick, earrings and the like. Girls were requested to dress like boys with long pants, boots, shirts inside out, and no make up. The sopho- mores had them go to the gym at noon to put on a show for the other classes. A Turn About dance was the money making proiect for the freshmen. At this dance the girls asked the boys. They also had a class party. afzoifaman 61644 UW o Marge Voorde President, Noreen Brouilette, Secretary-Treasf urer Kneeling Phil Grose, Sergeant-at-arms.
