NTER WITH US THROUGH THESE DOORS as-an LZLLL AND SEE US AT WORK AND PLAY THROUGH THE PAGES OF... T955 SCHOOL BEl.l. ECHOES Baugo Twp. School R,f,D, 114 Elkhart, Indiana As we entered these doors for another year, we knew that we were beginning the last days of our journey in quest of our ultimate goal of higher education. We knew all too well that soon our days of J .H.S. would become merely a part of our fondest memories. We, the seniors of Jamestown High School, feel justifiably proud of the fact that we have had the opportunity to pass through these doors. We are pround, too, of the fact that we are a part of this atomic age. In helping to usher in this ear we have been subjec- ted to many new experiences. Never be- fore have the pupils at Jamestown been offered the many opportimities which are now available to us. Our cirriculum now includes practically all subjects that are taught in modern high schools. We are proud, too of the fact that now approxima- tely 850 pupils attend our schools under the instruction of 32 well-trained and ex- perienced teachers. We realize that soon these experiences will be only memories, but trust that these experiences will prove to be valuable in our adult life. sl t I 'Nm X X V t ' X-f , K4 'Y ij in .aff Q, , fn Misfss if iv 4 vb 4 Q '9',,A-4' Q sv Dear Jimtown ites or fellow students as the case may be. If during the years of elementary and high school experience, one's judgement has been improved, a sense of reliability, fair play, courtesy, and loyality has been developed, and the ability to work with others has developed, and if the pupil has had some degree of success in the tools and skills of learning, then the pupils will be a better citizen in the community. This is the worth while type of training that our administrators are working diligently to foster. TRUSTEE LAWRENCE LE CHLITNER Q LYMAN HANN, A. B., M. S. HIGH SCHOOL PRINCIPAL Administration Mrs. Ruth James has now completed her sixth year working for the J immies as school secretary. Probably her most important job, and the one that consumes most of her time, is that of being respon- sible for all money and keeping accurate bookkeeping records of the general and many special accounts. Ruth has many other general clerical duties to S I perform which are too numerous to mention. For her kind, cheerful, sympathetic and co-op- erative attitude in all of her work the faculty and student body is appreciative. The office of the principal is certainly a busy one and is always open to assist pupils and parents who need help with school programs and problems This is where Mr. Hann, Prin., takes care of the many tasks of his job. It is his duty to find room for all the students, plan class schedules, supervise the fin ancial program, prepare schedules for assembly programs, schedule basketball games and hire the officials. In addition to these tasks Mr. Hann teach es one class of junior literature. RUTH JAMES SCHOOL SECRETARY ARTHUR KNE PP , A.B So that our little Jimmies may grow to become intelligent people, Mr. Knepp taught two classes each of World and United States History. For the first time in several years he again taught geometry in the math department. Mr. Knepp is also in charge of the seventh-hour study hall. He was the junior home-room teacher and sponsor of the junior class. As junior class sponsor he coached the Junior Class Play. He also has served as the official timer of all athletic events. In addition to these and other miscel- laneous duties he found time to serve on the Student Council as faculty representative and also as the president of the local Parent Teachers' Association. It is not a new or modern branch of learning, it is the 1T10St ancient of all studies. At the right we see Betty Lea- zenby, Richard Deak, and Patsy Parsons studying a collection of seeds. Driving nowadays is more work than pleasure because of the numerous traffic hazards. Drivers' training is designed to help the pupils to overcome many of these hazards by teaching them good driving habits. In the picture to the left Mr. Miller is instructing pupils in the fundamentals of driving. slolocv, PHYS. fn. AND DRIVERS' TRAINING Mr. Miller, who has now completed his first year of teaching at our school, began his day in charge of the first hour study hall. He taught two classes in biology, one in health and safety, and one class in drivers' training. This year the junior high pupils were offered physical education training for the first time in the history of the school. The boys' classes were under the direction of Mr. Miller. In addition to his regular teaching duties Mr. Miller coached baseball and basketball in the junior high school. 'Y 'I 2' ik' J ha. , VQ in 1.1, ' Q' X ' N? Each year a fashion show is presented to show the accomplishments of the girls. Across the hall from the cafeteria is located the girls' kitchen. Here, girls learn to prepare nourishing and appeti zing dishes under the direction of the home economics instri tors, Mrs. Mildred 1MillieJChristofeno and Miss Smith. The most modern equipment, including automatic washer and dryers, mixers, and up-to-date electric and gas stoves are provided for the homemaking rooms so that the girls can get most from their instruction. if 1:9 iii rs f Iv,, HDME EC. and PHYS. Miss Smith, a new member of the faculty, taught fresh- man home economics, and Junior High, Freshman, and Sophomore Phys. Ed. She also sponsored the G.A.A., a girls basketball team, and gir1's volley ball team. She also was in charge of organized games during the play period for the first three grades. The cheering block which took part in the county and sectional tourneys was a big success this year Lmder the leadership of Miss. Smith. Above we see the Sophomore girls engaged in a game of basketball and the Freshman girls preparing a meal ! f f '-he N w Sxu ED. M . . ,gr .ftfby X US KN Music Mr. Boegli is also a new teacher at our school and has done an excellent job. Because we now have two teachers with a license in music the instruction time has been in- creased considerably. Because of this it is hoped that the increased pupil in- terest in this department will continue and that parents will alsov snow a greater interest in this work. If this is done the J immies will soon be able to have a school band that can compete with the best. However, without greater parental support this is impossible. Some high school groups Mr. Boegli directed the past year and that have taken part in various musical program are the Beauty Shop Quartet-, the Gir1's Trio, and the High School Chorus. Mr. Boegli also gave individual instrumei al and vocal lessons. With the co-operation of Mr. Boegli and Miss Haas the grade school music department presented a Christmas, Thanksgiving and an Easter program '17 V7 fir' R T7 B f' XX ART AND MUSIC Miss Haas was employed this past year to teach art and music in our school. She taught art in all of the elementary grades and junior high and also taught a class in high school art. In the art classes the pupils gain a knowledge of drawing, color, design, decorating and commercial art. This training helps to improve one's personal taste in the use and response to artistic values. Miss Haas and her department was very co-operative in rendering valuable service to many other departments and organizations of the school. The art department pre- pared many posters, signs and other items of an artistic nature upon the request of any group. For this service the school is very appreciative. In addition to her work in the art department she taught vocal music in the fifth, and sixth grades. MISS ETHEL HAAS, B.S X was LYMAN HANN M A ENGLISH LITERATURE , . . STUDENT COUNCIL This year, at the beginning of the school semester, the Student Council took great strides in becoming a mature and responsible organization. It set up a well organized and controlled pass and monitor system. It also worked out a number of rules of con- duct for teachers to use in determining the pupils' citizenship grade. To explain these new plans the officers of the council conducted several general student assemblies. The council is conposed of one representative from each class and organized group in the high school. Mr. Arthur Knepp is the faculty representative and Mr. Hann is the sponsor. Officers of the council were Verlee Slemmons, PresidentgCarolyn Futrell, Secretary Janis Deak, Vice President. .. . v... ?y V fr f fury' 'IA B ill n ,.n,. , E 7 W www 'N me 60' 1 Q 4111:-,l,r. .,.u,-,L fi? 3, J'u -'llll UU' 'Iii Q! . -..,:-.,, I. -Q qs. 0103 934 ve-Wgxwxgmza DAB XA P N Queeg 61111 Ka Y HUNORARIES Verlee Slemmons xy W 3, 1' 0 l fr ' 1 I 'if' 1 la , x W 'li XX 5 ' f1'J i y '1 .f'i ' ' ' nf ,Af -4 Q2 Y , I 1 1 ' ff I f ,-. wi jx 4 ' .. rv N I I 009 s ' ECRETAR P YJ PRESIDENT 4 219 QXOXQ MIT!! We produced We Were Young That Year as our senior class play. Then came the long anticipated senior trip to New York and Washington by way of the Cumberland Gap and Skyline Drive through the Blue Ridge Mountains. Last but not least we finally arrived at the time when we were the honored guests at the banquet and prom, again held at Hotel Elkhart but this time in the Athenian Ball Room. Then came Baccalaureate with Rev. Wilburn as our speaker followed by our last and most cherished school experience graduation. On May 18, 1955, twenty six seniors marched down the aisle to receive from their principal, Mr. Lyman Hann, and their sponsor, Mr. Wayne Cook, their sought after reward- their diploma. Thus ended the formal training of the class of '55 at the Jamestown school. 7 A we 5 Ji . Q A ' 1' 0 . ,I A is oueterheut, K. cook, A. Petra, L. Newell, si Trigg, E. eau, F. L s V, Don McKee George Price Mr. Don McKee came to Jimtown from Sidney to be head coach of a team that had lost eight of its first ten members by graduation. As usual a new coach has a difficult job because he must first learn to know the boys and then to try and teach his method of play. This means that generally it is a style of play new to the team. However, in spite of this the varsity came through the year winning eleven games and losing eight. Under Coach McKee the reserve team won nine and lost ten. Again this year Mr. George Price was coach of the freshman and sixth grade teams The freshman as eighth graders had not won a game but this year they had plenty of spirit and a willingness to work and learn. They came through winning two games and losing eleven. Mr. Price has coached the sixth grade boys two years in a row and won sixteen out of eighteen games. This was probably one of the best records ever made by the same group of boys in our school. Our athletic department was again fortunate in having student managers who were anxious to do their job well. Don, Carl, and Hugh deserve a great amount of credit for the work that they performed. Yoder -had THESE DA YS ARE SOUN T0 FADE MEMORIES . . . thats a word I have been thinking about a lot lately, and in the days and years to come there will be many memories added to those we have made here . . but you and I will always remember these days in our memory as being wonderful days . . . As you look around knowing you're leaving these halls . . . and even though you know bigger and better things are to come, you--like me--realize you're leaving a part of yourself behind, and a feeling of sadness is ours. It's always difficult to leave something you love, and today that something is JHS. It's the love of a collection of simple little lovable experiences . . . the experiences of 12 years of our life. It will never be the same again. Time marches on and it is time for us to go. We have our memories . . . take them, cherish them, and with me always remember the days spent at JHS.
