ONE YEAR OF SCHOOL LIFE DEDICATION We, the class of 'l954, are proud to dedicate this annual to our sponsor, Mr. Arthur Knepp, who has guided us to new heights in our last two and most important years of school. ROSS KAUFFMAN LAMAR HOOVER FRANK WATKINS ADVISORY BOARD Many improvements in our school have been made pos- sible, during the past year, because of the efficient management and progressive foresight of our trustee and advisory board members. An excellent spirit of co-opera- tion has existed between the trustee and teachers. The new elementary building, new grade principal, art instructor, speech and hearing therapist, elementary supervisor, ma- chine shop equipment, electric typewriter and etc. are illustrations of the many improvements that have taken place during the past year. As we enter the main hall of the high school building we see the principal's office. This is where Mr. Lyman Hann, Prin., takes care of the many duties of his iob. In this office the daily attendance record is kept, report cards and permanment records of each pupil is recorded. Here is where teachers and pupils come for information and supplies. Announcements concerning many matters are issued by the PA system from this office. We think that Mr. Hann has been doing a good iob of administering our school as principal. English and language English is taught all four years in the high school, and is an elective only in the senior year. English is the basis by which we express our- selves and also helps us to understand word mean- ings. Each year English grammar is taught the first semester and English literature the second. Latin is a requirement needed to enter some colleges and is required by most colleges for those who wish to enter medicine, pharmacy, and nurses' training. -- l H Mrs. Luse teaches two classes of fresh- men English. She also teaches junior English, senior speech and Latin. She is in charge of the fifth hour study hall. This year Mr. Hann has been teaching business English and English literature as an elective for the seniors. This course was introduced this year to give those people who were majoring in busi- ness an opportunity to improve their knowledge of letter writing, spelling, punctuation, and etc. LYMAN HANN, M. L-Lp' , BRADFORD McINTOSH, 5. 5 ,,...., MARY LOU STUCKMAN, B. S. Art and Commercial This was the first year for formal art classes in the Baugo Township School. Miss Mary Lou Stuckman of Nappanee was employed to teach art in all grades and in the high school. High school art was offered as an elective with eleven pupils enrolling in this class. The only art training that pupils had received prior to this year was whatever time the elementary grade and iunior high teachers decided to devote to this type of training. ln these classes students gain knowledge of drawing, color, design, perspective, sculpture, and commercial art. Art im- proves personal taste and helps develop an appreciation of artistic values. ln addition to Miss Stuckman's duties as an art teacher, she taught one class in beginning typewriting and the shorthand class. 3-I-3 Home Economics Mildred Christofeno has been head of the home economics de- partment and the cafeteria for a number of years. In addition to these duties she has also been the girls' 4-H leader and F.H.A. sponsor. She teaches the home economic subiects in the sophomore, iunior and senior years. These subjects include instruction in the preparation and serving of family meals with special emphasis on nutrition. Other things taught include home nursing and child care, a study of textiles and advanced clothing construction, family relations, housing and home decoration. The school days for our class have now come to an end. This year has been a busy one, occupying our extra moments with such money raising events as: chili suppers, box-socials, washing cars, our class play, gathering scrap iron, selling Christmas cards, concessions at the noon hour and at basket- ball games. Sometimes we made our work into play but we ac- complished much. Our class trip was the one big event which we looked for- ward to tor tour long years. ELEMENTARY GRADE PRINCIPAL 4.34,-Q - .. . 1....................... -Qi W BUILDING As we enter the main entrance of the new grade school building we come to the office of the grade principal. One of the many progressive steps that was taken this last year was the addition of another administrator to our school faculty. Mr. George Price was employed as principal of the first six grades. Under his supervision he had' l3 teachers and 480 pupils. Working with him part-time were the music and art teachers, the speech and hearing therapist, elementary superviser and the school nurse. In addition to his many duties as adminstrator, he taught several classes in organized play and coached the fifth and Freshmen basketball teams. The school and community are proud of the excellent iob that Mr. Price has done during his first year as elementary Principal. NEW EXPERIENCE As we continued our visit in this new one-story, ultra-modern grade school addition, we learn that it houses 285 pupils--the first 3 and one-half grades. Also, that it contains 8 classrooms, 2 rest-rooms, a teacher supply room and a utility room. All ofthe rooms and the spacious hall are done in beautiful contrasting colors. Modern desks, built-in storage space, lockers, and flourescent lighting are some of the modern features that make this new addition a most pleasent place for children to begin their elementary education. The front and back lawns have been well land-scoped and plans have been made to build a separate play-ground area, close to the back of the building. ALICE HousouR, A. B. PAUL ROGERS, B- S- Sixth Grade As we continue our trip through the first floor of the main building we turn left to walk through the upper elemen tary grade hall. Immediately on our right we visit the sixth grade rooms where Mr. Rogers and Miss Housour are the teachers. The regular subiects taught in this grade are reading, writing, arithmetic, spelling, history, geog- raphy, English, health, music, and art. Once each week the pupils enioy on organized play period conducted by Mr. Price. This grade had their own basketball team coached by Mr. Rogers.
